Chapter 9: The Engagement Party

Third Person POV

Before going to dress up for the party, Millicent had made sure that the hall was set in a manner befitting a great Alpha. She had not done it to please him but just as a duty. She hadn't done it alone though. Decorators had been invited but she had been present to assist and her ideas had really helped to make the outcome more breathtaking.

Now that the party was in full swing, she found that she was growing impatient. She wanted to be gone from this place and see what she could make of her life to enable her fulfill her life's purpose.

Millicent moved about, serving drinks and food. There were alot of invited guests. Most of whom were Alphas from other packs. Some came with their Lunas, while others came alone with the intension to mate with any of the women in the pack that they took a fancy to before returning home to their Lunas.

Alpha Sylvester was happy at how everything was going. He had become engaged to Cathania, his first love and the daughter of his father's friend, Alpha Jerome of the Arcade Pack. Apart from his feelings for her, the union was supposed to solidify their parents' friendship and gain them more allies.

Alpha Sylvester was disturbed, though he tried not to show it as he smiled at his guest. His eyes kept following a particular girl around. He had not known she looked this good. He wondered at his conflicting emotions. He had always seen her as the maid and an object to unleash his vengeance on but though she was serving the party, he saw how beautiful she looked. He had also seen a few of the Alphas who did not come with their Lunas glance her way more than once and knew what they were thinking and a rage started up inside of him.

'Why are you angry? She is no longer yours', his wolf told him angrily. It had taken him alot of perseverance to be able to subdue his wolf and control his urges and feelings.

'Keep quiet! She is still mine as long as she remains here. When she leaves, then I shall accept that she is no longer mine'

'Is that so? Did you see how gladly she accepted your rejection? You denied me our mate and you want to take as your Luna, someone not fated to you. How is that supposed to work?'

'It will work just fine!' he snapped. He hated to be told that he had made a wrong decision.

'Alpha Sylvester', Alpha Donald called merrily. 'You have lots of beauties here I must say', His eyes were twinkling and following Millicent.

Alpha Sylvester saw how his eyes followed Millicent and grunted in reply.

As Millicent served, one Beta could not take his eyes of her. Almost all the male, actually. Millicent was oblivious to the stir she was causing and the appreciative stares she was getting. Beta Dan who had stood behind his Alpha since the party started was surprised when Alpha Sylvester turned to him in irritation.

Beta Dan quickly bent to know what his Alpha required of him but Sylvester just grunted, 'Stop standing behind me. Find something to do or join the party. I do not need you now!'

'Have I done something wrong?' he asked, not knowing the reason for his Alpha's obvious irritation.

'Just join the party, man!'

Beta Dan did not want to antagonize him further by asking more questions that may seem irrelevant, and he needed no promptings anyway, he wanted to enjoy the party too. So he moved into the crowd.

Since his Alpha had given him permission to enjoy himself to the fullest, Beta Dan decided to approach the object of his fascination but he went through her friend Samantha.

'Samantha', he said.'Could you relief your friend for a while? I want to dance with her'.

Samantha had been speaking to another Omega and smiling shyly because she noticed a Beta from another pack, looking at her with longing. She liked him as well. It was flattering seeing that he could hardly take his eyes off her. So, when Beta Dan came, asking her to relieve Millicent, she gladly did. Maybe, if Millicent took a liking to Dan, she would forget about leaving the pack and stay here with her. The thought of not seeing her dear friend again was unsettling. 'With pleasure', she smiled at Beta Dan and Beta Alfred who had been looking longingly at Samantha frowned. What was Dan up to?

'Here, let me help', Samantha said as she reached Millicent, taking the tray of drinks from her.

'No..'she started, but the tray was already out of her hands and Samantha was already moving towards the guests. She stood there, mouth agape but not for long as she was startled by a voice behind her. 'Can I dance with you?'

She swirled round to find the Beta.'Oh', she said thinking of a nice way to turn him down.

'Before you give me the excuse that you are serving the party, Samantha has already taken over for you at least for some time. You need to enjoy the party as well'.

She looked into his hazel eyes. He was not a bad Beta. In fact he was one of the best looking and well behaved Betas of the pack. She thought, Why not? It was her birthday afterall.

'Okay', she smiled, giving him her hand and he drew her to a side of the hall, swirling her around as they danced. She laughed, allowing herself to feel happy. And she was happy. She hadn't thought that she could enjoy the party this way but Beta Dan had a way with him and though she did not feel attracted to him, she enjoyed his company.

Samantha saw her friend laughing and dancing with so much vigour and smiled happily. She hadn't known Millicent could dance so well. Well, there hadn't been any opportunities for her to showcase her talent.

Alpha Sylvester who had been following Millicent with his eyes, saw Dan go to her and take her to the part of the hall, dancing with her with so much familiarity that he felt himself seething.

'Let it go', his wolf again. 'That you do not want her does not mean others don't as well'. Sylvester could feel the sadness in his voice. He knew that his wolf wanted Millicent but his pride would not allow him satisfy his wolf's desire.

'I do not want her!' he snapped at the wolf pestering him.

'Then why are you upset?' Wolf asked him.

He did not answer as he thought of a befitting punishment for his Beta. As for that whore Millicent, he was going to deal with her before she goes on exile. Was she not supposed to work the party?

'Darling, what is it?' Cathania who had been so happy at being engaged to him that she had been oblivious to all else asked. 'You look tense'.

'Nothing', he said mechanically, still not taking his eyes off the dancing couple. And she dances so well. He imagined how she must move if she were on heat and being claimed by him. 'Stop it!' he mind linked his wolf. 'Don't do that to yourself! I do not want to find out. I am way out of her league and will not stoop to claim her. Look at Cathania'.

'Yet you can't stop staring at her!'

He made an effort to take his eyes away but could not. He was getting angrier by the second at the way Dan was holding her close or maybe it was his wolf that was getting anxious, it couldn't be him, he had nothing to do with that weakling.

'Are you planning on mating her?'

Sylvester, jerked out of his stupor. It was Cathania.

'What do you mean?'

'I mean you seem to be unable to take your eyes off your maid! It is our engagement and you have not even spared me any look but you can't stop looking at your maid!' she hissed angrily.

'You don't know what you are saying', he said fiercely.

'Don't I?' Cathania asked hurt etched on every corner of her face. 'I have asked you if you have anything going with that maid but you always deny it but now I know that you do. Or you want there to be. You cannot resist her'.

'Yes, he cannot.' his wolf said to Cathania though she could not hear him. 'So back off. Your engagement to him is useless!'

'Shut up, Cathania', Alpha Sylvester barked. 'You are the one I got engaged to and the one I want to marry and make my Luna and you are here feeling insecure because of a maid?'

'Isn't she supposed to be working the party?' she asked furiously as she looked with jealous fury at Millicent who was still dancing happily with Beta Dan. Seething, she thought angrily, I have a mind walk up to her and rip that dress off her and then ask her to continue her work as the lowly maid she is. How dare she dress that way to seduce my fiance.
