Chapter Four
Two years later,
In a not so spacious living room and on a pink colored sofa, there sat Natalie, in front of the TV, savoring a delicious burger. Her early morning burger cravings were still going strong, just like old times.
Just then, the sound of heels echoed through the house, Natalie's head snapped towards the stairs.
Her mouth fell open in disbelief as she laid eyes on Scarlett, her best friend, standing there with her stunning blonde curls and shining blue eyes.
The past two years had been tough for Scarlett, but seeing her looking so beautiful in her corporate office outfit brought tears to Natalie's eyes.
Scar went from 'damsel in distress' to 'corporate goddess' in just two years!
Natalie couldn't believe her eyes! She quickly set aside her beloved burger and stood up, letting out a low whistle of amazement.
It was clear that Scarlett's stunning transformation had left her utterly speechless.
Natalie's eyes widened in surprise, her hand flying to her mouth as she exclaimed, "No way!"
Scar smiled at her friend’s hideous reaction. "How do I look?" She asked with a wink.
"Wow, girl! You look f*cking and absolutely hot in that outfit!" Nat exclaimed. "And that wink? It’s a room code" she added and gave Scar a hug.
Scar giggled and embraced Nat. "You silly”
Natalie couldn't contain her excitement as she pulled away from the hug and eagerly sat Scar down on the sofa.
"Did you think about what I said?" she asked eagerly.
Scar nodded with a mischievous smile, "Yep!"
Natalie gasped dramatically, her eyes widening. "No way! Are you actually getting a job?!"
"And the interview is by 9" Scar added as her smile grew wider.
Natalie smiled like Christmas came early.
"When did you start looking for a job, Scar?"
Scar shrugged, "a week ago" she said as she took up the left over Burger.
'How yummy’
"there’s a newly opened firm named Ash ventures. It’s a 30 minutes drive from here and it’s already..." she trailed off as she glanced at the wall clock. "8:12...... what?! 8:12??? I need to go!”
She scrambled up to her feet, throwing the burger away.
Mat nodded frantically and grabbed Scar’s purse and file, "don’t forget these!" She handed them to her immediately.
Scar nodded and took in deep breaths.
"You’ve got this girlfri....." Nat paused as she felt her phone in her pocket vibrate.
Incoming text.
She grabbed the phone immediately, totally ignoring her best-friend.
Scar who was waiting for more encouragements squinted when she got none, her eyes popped open and fell on Nat who was busily typing away on her phone.
"Common Nat!" She yelled, giving her an angry look.
"Sorry baby, you’ve got this”
"You ain’t even looking at me, you dumbass!" Scar yelled and almost threw her shoes at the annoying Natalie.
"Who are you texting again?"
"Who else, Lucas of course" Natalie replied again with a shrug.
She had being texting this unknown guy named Lucas online.
Though she hadn’t seen what he looked like, he was such a sweet talker and made her wet, even with words.
He made her very happy that she always forgot she had a best friend each time she got a text from Prince Charming.
Scar unable to bear the pain, the attention robber had robbed from her, she grabbed her purse and file and stomped out of the house, without a proper goodbye.
'Hmph, bitchy best friend!'
.....
Scarlett frantically waved down a taxi like a Jedi summoning the Force.
But oh boy, the taxi driver seemed to have a PhD in Delayology!
Scar's patience was tested as they crawled through traffic at the speed of a snail on a leisurely stroll.
She couldn't help but curse the universe for conspiring against her interview success. Every time a vehicle dared to hinder her path, she unleashed a barrage of creative insults that would make a sailor blush!
But Scar, being the quick-witted girl she was, also found humor in the situation. She made up ridiculous stories about the drivers, like the guy in the yellow car who was probably on a secret mission to deliver pizza to aliens.
Finally, after what felt like a century, the taxi arrived at Ash Ventures, and Scar burst out of the car like a superhero on a mission.
She begrudgingly paid the driver, muttering under her breath about how this damn New York City had conspired against her on her first day of the interview.
With a quick exchange of cash, she hurriedly stormed into the building, muttering to herself about the unfairness of it all.
As she stepped into the colossal building, her eyes widened in astonishment. She couldn't believe how massive the firm was, especially considering it had just been established.
'The owner must be ridiculously wealthy to have built such an expansive empire in a mere six months'
The CEO’s assistant’s position was vacant now, Scar also found herself amongst those vying for the coveted position of CEO's assistant, a role that held immense significance within the company.
And if she wasn't mistaken, a staggering 382 candidates were also in the running for that very seat.
The competition was fierce, but Scar refused to be deterred.
She didn't spend all those years studying business for nothing. She was equipped with the knowledge, skills, and expertise to excel in this role. Her education had prepared her to tackle the challenges and make strategic decisions that will drive the firm's success.
And one thing about Scar was, she loved money.
It was now or never. She couldn’t just bag such a good degree and waste it in staying home all the time and crying.
Natalie said those men would never chase her to New York and with the two years gone, she bet Nat was right.
So she could now forget about her parents and begin her life afresh.
Whatsoever happened to them, had nothing to do with her.
