Chapter 5: Detention
10/3/13. Kaelyn Green. After school detention. Report immediately to Mr. Wilson’s room after classes are over.
I read my detention slip for what seemed like the fiftieth time today. I walked around the last corner and Mr. Wilson’s room was right in front of me. I opened up the door and saw that there was nobody in there yet. Mr. Wilson wasn’t even here yet!
Wow Kaelyn, first one to detention. How much more of a goody-goody could you be?
I put my slip on Mr. Wilson’s desk and took a seat at the back of the room. I decided that since no one was here yet, I might as well listen to music or something until they do get here. I took my Iphone out of my pocket and then put my earbuds in. I closed my eyes and tapped my fingers on the desk.
Check yes Juliet are you with me? Rain is falling down on the sidewalk, I won’t go until you come outside. Check yes Juliet kill the limbo, I’ll keep tossing rocks at your window, there’s no turning back for us tonight.
The first verse of Check Yes Juliet by We The Kings was blasting through my ears, when someone took my earbuds out of my ears.
“Excuse me, but who the fuck just interrupted my-“ I stopped semi-yelling when I saw who took away my happiness.
“That would be me, babe.” I had never heard that voice before. I turned around and saw a tall, slim, boy who looked to be my age. He threw my headphones on my desk and leaned over me.
“Um….” I looked at him.
“You’re in my seat.” He said. I furrowed my eyebrows together and looked up into his green eyes.
“Actually no, this isn’t ‘your’ seat. Does it have your name on it? No, it doesn’t. So I’m going to sit here no matter what.” I was about to start rambling when I bit my lip to stop myself.
“Babe, I sit there every day I get detention, so I suggest you get up before I have to force you up,” He said in a deep voice that sent shivers down my spine.
“No,” I said stubbornly.
“Well, I guess I’m going to have to do this the hard way then.” The mystery boy put his hands around my waist- I started squirming.
“Get off of me,” I said. I tried to pry off his arms but he just tightened his grip on me. Where are all the other people who are supposed to be in detention? Where is Mr. Wilson?
“No can do babe, I tried to tell you to move but you didn’t listen.” He lifted me up out of the chair and pinned me up against the wall. I was panicking, I didn’t know what to do. “So, you’re the famous Kaelyn Green?” he asked me.
“Famous?”
“Yeah, because of that perfect little-“ Perfect little what? My question was not answered because someone had burst into the room.
“GET THE FUCK OFF OF HER TYLER!” A comforting but, scary voice yelled. So his name’s Tyler? There was a smirk on Tyler’s lips as he stared into my eyes before turning around to face Shane. Shane was staring at Tyler; his hands were balled up into fists.
“Don’t touch me,” I whimpered. Damnit Kaelyn, why do you have to act so weak? Shane started walking towards Tyler and I. But, I didn’t want Shane to interfere.
I lifted up my leg and kicked Tyler- very hard- in the stomach. Tyler stumbled backwards and then doubled over in pain. I looked over to Shane and saw that he was smiling… I’ve never really seen him smile but, he sure did look hot when he did.
I didn’t just think that? Did I?
“Now, I’m going to sit here whether you like it or not. So bye, bye,” I said. Wow, where did that sudden confidence boost come from? I watched as Tyler backed up and he went to go sit on the opposite side of the room.
“Wow, that was unexpected,” I heard Shane mumble.
“What?” I sat down and Shane sat down at the desk next to me.
“Nothing, it’s just that I um...” He was at a loss for words. I wonder if I did that to him…
Seconds later students started filing into the detention room. Almost all of them were boys, scary looking boys. But, some outcasts came in too. A few people that I would’ve never thought to have detention came in, taking a seat in the front. I saw a lot of them look back at Shane and me before choosing where to sit. Nobody came near Shane and I; I thought that was pretty strange. But, we are in detention.
“Detention begins now. I will expect no talking, no passing notes, no cell phones,” Mr. Wilson took a cell phone out of some boy’s hands. “I will be in the staff room and if there is any noise coming from this room, there will be an extra two days worth of detention for you all to be serving.” He stated. Mr. Wilson then grabbed his keys and left the room.
“I thought in detention the teacher is supposed to be in here,” I turned to Shane.
“They are, except Mr. Wilson doesn’t give a shit so he just leaves us to do whatever,” Shane explained. I nodded. I looked around the room, everyone was sitting around just talking. Some people were listening to music on their phones and others- I assumed that they were new to detention too- were working on their homework.
“Oh,” I put my headphones back in my ears and started listening to music again. I would’ve continued to talk to Shane, if I wasn’t so nervous. I’m terrified that I’ll make a fool of myself, because it’s just in my nature to do that. While I was looking around, I noticed some of the boys up front pointing at me, and then whispering to one of their friends.
Is there something on my face? Is my hair messed up? Is there something wrong with my shirt? I looked down, oh yeah.
“Hey… um… Shane?”
“Yes?” He lifted his head and put his phone on the desk.
“This is going to be a really weird question but, um… am I the first girl you’ve ever given your jacket to?” I hesitantly asked.
“Maybe,” He mysteriously said. I scrunched up my face; I just wanted a straight answer.
“Is that a yes or is it a no?” Shane laughed.
“It’s a maybe,” He smirked. I didn’t say anything else. I just put my earbuds back in my ears and started listening to music again.
***
“Crap, crap, crap, crap, crap!” I screamed out in frustration. Mr. Wilson had just released us from detention and I was still inside the school. I looked out the front doors and saw the storm. It was raining cats and dogs outside. The constant sound of the rain hitting the pavement was putting me on edge.
I had two choices. The first one is to ride my skateboard through the shortcut to my house that is only walking/biking/skateboarding accessible and four miles away… or I could call my brother Michael and make him pick me up. He was at work right now so that wouldn’t been very keen.
I didn’t notice the footsteps coming from behind me. Someone taped on my shoulder, causing my heart to stop for a millisecond.
“God, you scared me!” I pushed Shane back. Oh my god, did I just push the bad boy. Please don’t let him hurt me. Well, he’s been really sweet and kind so far. I don’t know why everyone thinks that he’s so bad.
“I didn’t try to,” Shane smiled. He smiled again; how many times is that? At least five… in one day! “You forgot to give me back my jacket,” He reminded me. I blushed and looked at his leather jacket’s sleeves.
“Oh, sorry, it’s just that it smelled so good and it was so comfortable. I forgot I had it on,” After saying that, I quickly covered my hand over my mouth. Did I really just say that?
“Well, I’m glad you thought that it was,” Shane smirked. I bit my lip and took off his jacket. Shane took the jacket out of my hands and put it on himself. “Now it smells even better,”
“Ha, um yeah.” Why wasn’t I rambling? I always ramble.
Shane looked out the window and then looked down at my skateboard.
“Y’know, it isn’t good for your skateboard to ride it during a storm.” Shane informed me.
“Yeah, I know,” I sighed. I was hoping that the rain would’ve died down by now, instead it was raining harder. “I have no other way to get home, unless I want to call my overprotective brother who will completely freak out if he hears that I got detention. He’ll tell me ‘you don’t want to follow in my footsteps because look how I turned out.’ Or something stupid like that. And Michael is at work and he’ll kill me for making him leave early,” There it was. My word vomit.
“How about I take you home,” Shane offered. Why was he being so nice to me?
“I don’t know…” I hesitated.
“C’mon, it’s the least I can do. Please, I don’t want you skating home in the rain,” He said. I sighed. I hope this isn’t a scheme. I mean, why else would he be so nice to me? What does he want with me?
“Sure,” I said, unsure of myself. I don’t know what to expect. I hope that he isn’t going to try to take advantage of me like Gage supposedly took advantage of Sierra.
“Ok, you just wait here and I’ll bring the car around,” Shane took his keys out of his pocket and then walked out the front doors of the school. I should’ve kept his jacket so that he wouldn’t get it soaking wet. It is leather after all. A few minutes later I was getting into Shane Collin’s car.
Shane Collin’s car. Hmm…
It was a black dodge challenger, in perfect condition. This, believe it or not, was something I expected he would have. Shane started the car and drove off.
“Mind if I turn on some music?” He asked me.
“N-no,” I stuttered. Why was I stuttering?
“Okay,” He turned on the radio- no, it was a CD. Suddenly my favourite song’s lyrics were drowning out the pitter patter of the rain on Shane’s windshield.
If you can't hang then there's the door, baby
If you can't hang then there's the door, baby
If you can't hang then there's the door, baby
If you can't hang then there's the door
“You like Sleeping with Sirens too?” I randomly asked.
“Of course I do.” Shane smiled. Well, that’s nice to know.
About fifteen minutes later Shane pulled into my driveway. The rain had died down slightly, but it was still pouring.
“Thanks for driving me home,” I said. Shane turned off his car and turned to me.
“No problem. If you wanted me to, I could start coming to pick you up in the mornings, so you won’t have any more detentions to go to,” He offered. Is he on drugs or something? Why is he being this nice?
“No, that’s ok. I’ll just start waking up earlier and yeah,” I was about to open the car door to get out, when he grabbed my arm.
“Wait, can I have your phone number?” He asked me. I blushed and nodded. He turned over his left hand and then handed me a sharpie. I wrote my number on his hand and he grinned at me.
“Bye, Shane. Thanks again.”
“Bye Kaelyn,” He replied. I opened his car door and then stepped out into the rain. I watched Shane back out of my driveway before walking into my deserted house. Thank god Michael wasn’t home, or else I would be bombarded with questions. I quickly took off my Vans and ran up to my room. I striped out of my wet clothes and turned on the shower.
Today sure has been a crazy day.
