His Pick

Rebecca's POV

It had been two days since the cliff accident, and I still wasn’t allowed to see Enzo. Every time I went to the healer's wing, the warriors sent me away. They told me the same thing over and over: he had made it clear he didn't want to see me.

I sat on my bed, feeling restless and sick. My wolf, Olivia, finally spoke up in my head. He is right, Becca. You are reckless. You almost got us both killed.

She was right. I didn’t know why I did it. Maybe, deep down, I knew he would save me. How foolish of me. Enzo was right—I was still just a child playing dangerous games.

A soft knock suddenly came from my bedroom door before my older sister, Clara, stepped inside. She walked in and rolled her eyes at me. "You almost got the Beta of this pack killed," she said bluntly.

I didn't answer. I didn't care about her lecture; all I wanted was to see Enzo.

"Stop this, Becca. Give up on him," she said, crossing her arms. "Enzo has a type, and it certainly isn't you."

That made my blood boil. I glared at her. "Really? Then what is his type? Big breasts? A big ass? What?"

Clara scoffed and stepped closer. "He likes them naughty and spoiled. And you, my little sister? You are too innocent. You're a virgin. I bet you haven't even pleasured yourself before."

My face turned bright red from embarrassment. She saw it and laughed. "Give up, sis. Enzo would rather cut his own cock off than put it inside you."

I glared at her, my heart pounding with rage. Before I could snap back, a guard knocked on the door. "My ladies, your father demands your presence in his suite immediately."

Panic hit me. My father didn't just demand our presence unless something big was happening. Was he going to punish me for Enzo's injuries?

"Shit!"

Clara smirked. "You are in big soup, sis."

I ignored Clara’s smirk and followed her out, my heart hammering against my ribs. "Do you have any idea why he called us?" I whispered.

"No," she said, not looking back. "Who knows? Maybe he’ll finally listen to Enzo’s advice and send you away to that school."

I froze for a second, my stomach dropping. Two years ago, Enzo had suggested to my father that I be sent to the elite university Clara attended. My father almost agreed, until I played the suicide card to make them stop. What if he did it now? No... I couldn't be away from Enzo for two years. He was my life.

With shaky legs, we reached my father's suite. My breath caught as I saw Enzo standing there. I lost all my control and rushed toward him. I stood right in front of him, my eyes scanning his body. "Enzo... you are well? You are fine?"

The bruises were gone. He looked like himself again—strong, cold, and fucking hot. He didn't say a word; he only gave a short, stiff nod.

"Rebecca, get a grip on yourself," my father said, sounding annoyed.

I swallowed hard and stepped away, my face burning.

My father was aging; he was sixty and had me and my sisters late in life. Our mother died during labor after having me, and he had refused to remarry. Now, his health was deteriorating, and no healer could seem to help him permanently.

Clara, the responsible daughter, sat on the edge of his bed. "Father, are you okay?"

He smiled at her, but when his eyes landed on me, he glared. Don’t take it wrong—if my father had a favorite, it was me.

"Sit down, Rebecca," he ordered, gesturing to a chair.

I sat, my eyes darting to Enzo. He was standing by the window, his back to me, looking out at the forest. He looked so professional, so much like the Beta he was supposed to be, that it felt like the night on the cliff had never happened.

"I have made a decision," my father began, his voice raspy. "About the future of this pack." My father’s voice dropped, becoming low and heavy with emotion. "Enzo... you are like a son to me," my father said, his eyes misting over. "After your father, my best friend, died ten years ago, you stepped into his shoes as my Beta. You were just a boy, but you did marvelously well. You became the son I never had."

I swallowed hard, my heart hammering against my ribs. Where was he going with this?

"That is why," Father continued, "I am making you my successor. You will be the next Alpha."

Clara and I didn't even blink. We weren't shocked; we had always known Enzo was the only one fit to lead. He was the strongest, the smartest, and the most respected warrior we had.

"Congratulations, Beta Enzo," Clara said, sounding genuinely happy for him.

But Enzo didn't seem excited by the news; his jaw remained tight.

"But," my father added, his voice turning sharp, "on one condition. You must pick one of my daughters for a wife. A pack needs a Luna, Enzo. It needs a bloodline."

My eyes widened. I stared at my father, then back at Enzo. My heart was racing. Enzo had to pick me or my sister? I looked at him, my heart full of hope. It has to be me. Clara and Enzo barely ever talked. I was the one who followed him, the one who loved him, the one he just jumped off a cliff to save!

"Go on, Enzo..." my father said, leaning back into his pillows. "We've talked about this. I have given you months to think. You told me you had made your choice."

My heart nearly leaped out of my chest. He had been thinking about this for months? He knew he was going to marry me, and he kept it a surprise? I looked at him, my eyes shining with tears of joy. I wanted to run to him and throw my arms around his neck.

Enzo finally moved. He shifted his gaze away from my father and looked at me. For a split second, I thought I saw that hidden hunger in his green eyes again. But then, his gaze turned black—cold, empty, and dead.

"I choose Clara," he said.

The words felt like a physical slap. The room went silent, the only sound being the ragged breath catching in my throat.

"I choose Clara," he repeated, his voice louder and firmer this time. "She is the right choice for the pack."
