Chapter Three: THE GALA

"Stay close to me."

Damian's voice was low, tight, nothing like the controlled tone I'd grown used to. We stood outside the venue, Manhattan glittering behind us, cameras flashing somewhere in the distance. His hand found the small of my back. Warm. Firm. Possessive in a way that made my spine straighten.

"I know how to handle a party," I said.

"This isn't a party." His grip tightened slightly. "This is a battlefield. And Adrian is already inside."

The name landed differently now. This morning, it had been a shock a ghost appearing on his phone screen. But I'd spent the whole day watching Damian unravel in ways I hadn't thought possible. The missed calls he ignored. The way he stared at walls like they held answers. The tightness in his shoulders that never released.

Whoever Adrian was, he wasn't just an ex.

He was a wound that had never healed.

"What do I need to know?" I asked.

Damian looked at me. Really looked like he was deciding how much truth I could handle.

"Adrian Vale," he said quietly. "CEO of Vale Industries. Board member at Kingsley Enterprises. My father's favorite protégé."

"And?"

A pause. His jaw worked. "My ex."

I already knew that part. But hearing him say it, hearing the weight behind those two words, made something twist in my chest. Not jealousy. Something stranger. Something I didn't have time to name.

"He'll test you," Damian continued. "Push. Probe. Try to find cracks. Don't give him anything."

"I can handle myself."

"I know." His eyes held mine. Intense. Almost vulnerable. "That's what worries me."

Before I could respond, the doors opened.

The gala was exactly what I expected and nothing like it.

Crystal chandeliers. White marble floors. Women in gowns that cost more than my mother's medical bills. Men in suits that whispered power. Everyone moved like they belonged, like they'd been born into rooms like this, like the air itself was designed for them.

And then there was me.

I wore the suit Claire had chosen, dark navy, perfectly fitted, and expensive in ways I couldn't even calculate. But inside, I felt like a fraud. A prop. A stranger pretending he deserved to breathe the same air as these people.

Damian's hand stayed on my back. Steady. Grounding. Like he knew exactly what I was feeling and refused to let me drown.

"Smile," he murmured near my ear. His breath was warm against my skin. "They're watching."

I smiled. Not because I felt it, but because I'd learned a long time ago how to perform when survival depended on it.

We moved through the room like a single unit. Damian introduced me to board members, investors, and people whose names I forgot the moment they left my lips. Everyone smiled. Everyone congratulated us. Everyone looked at me like they were trying to figure out what Damian Kingsley could possibly see in someone like me.

I wondered the same thing.

"You're doing well," Damian said quietly during a brief pause between introductions.

"Don't sound so surprised."

"I'm not surprised. I'm impressed."

Something warm flickered in my chest. I pushed it down immediately. This was a contract. Nothing more.

But the way he looked at me, like I'd exceeded some invisible standard he'd set, made it hard to remember that.

"Damian."

The voice came from behind us. Smooth. Controlled. Familiar in a way that made Damian's entire body go rigid.

We turned.

And I understood everything.

Adrian Vale was beautiful.

There was no other word for it. Tall, lean, with light eyes that seemed to absorb the light rather than reflect it. Sandy hair pushed back carelessly. A face that belonged in magazines: sharp cheekbones, full lips, the kind of effortless elegance that made everyone else in the room look like they were trying too hard.

He smiled as he approached. Warm. Easy. Perfect.

And completely, utterly fake.

"Congratulations," Adrian said. His eyes moved from Damian to me, slow and assessing. "I heard the news this morning. Married. Again." He tilted his head. "You move quickly."

Damian's hand pressed harder against my back. A warning? A plea? I couldn't tell.

"Adrian," Damian said. His voice was flat. Careful. "I didn't expect you tonight."

"I never miss a chance to celebrate." Adrian's gaze settled on me fully now. Those light eyes, pale blue, almost silver, felt like searchlights. Exposing. Uncomfortable. "And you must be Noah."

"I must be."

His smile widened. "Charming. I can see why Damian chose you."

The word "chose" came out wrong like a joke only he understood. Like I was a purchase rather than a person.

"Damian doesn't choose," I said. "He calculates."

Adrian's eyebrows lifted. Surprise flickered across his perfect features, brief, quickly hidden, but real.

Behind me, I felt Damian shift. Not quite a reaction. But close.

"I like him," Adrian said softly. His eyes stayed on mine. "He has teeth."

"He's standing right here," I said.

"I know." Adrian stepped closer. Too close. Close enough that I could smell his cologne, sharp, expensive, nothing like Damian's warmth. "That's what makes this interesting."

He extended his hand. I took it. His grip was firm, confident, and lingered exactly one beat too long.

"Welcome to the family, Noah," he said.

The same words Damian had used yesterday. But from Adrian's lips, they sounded like a threat.

"Thank you," I said. "I'm sure we'll see each other often."

"Oh, I guarantee it." His smile didn't waver. "After all, Damian and I have... history. You'll learn that soon enough."

He released my hand and turned to Damian. Something passed between them, a current of electricity that had nothing to do with attraction and everything to do with war.

"We should talk," Adrian said quietly. "Privately. Soon."

"We have nothing to discuss."

"We have everything to discuss." Adrian's voice dropped. "Including the clause your father left. The one you're so desperate to satisfy."

Damian went still. Actually, still, like every muscle in his body had frozen at once.

"Careful," Damian said. His voice was low. Dangerous. "You're on thin ice."

"I've always loved the cold." Adrian smiled one last time, at Damian, then at me. "Enjoy your evening, gentlemen. I'll be in touch."

He walked away. Slow. Confident. Like he'd already won a game we didn't know we were playing.

I waited until he was out of earshot. Then I turned to Damian.

"What clause?"

His jaw was locked. His eyes tracked Adrian across the room with something that looked like hatred and something else. Something older. Deeper. More painful.

"Damian. What clause?"

He finally looked at me. And in that moment, his guard dropped completely. No walls. No control. Just raw, exposed fear.

"The marriage clause isn't the only condition in my father's will," he said quietly. "There's another one. Hidden. And if Adrian knows about it."

He stopped. Swallowed. His hand found mine instinctive, unplanned, desperate.

"If Adrian knows about it, then this entire arrangement is already compromised."

My heart slammed against my ribs. "What does the clause say?"

Damian held my gaze. And the words that came out of his mouth changed everything.

"It says the marriage has to be real."
