Chapter 9
ALPHA JAX'S POV
I had a meeting in my office with my heads of security. There's a viral news about a serial killer in the city. My pack has the tightest security in the continent. Even at that, you can never be too careful.
"I doubt the killer will be a threat to us" I said "We have men at our borders. Even though we have good security, I don't want us to relent. We have to fortify our defenses even more. How can we make our security tighter? At least, until the killer is caught"
They all nodded in agreement.
"I want to hear your thoughts" I said "Speak freely. All suggestions are welcome"
"The borders are fine" Marcus, the head of palace security said "Our men are there 24/7 running shifts. So, I don't think we have a problem there. I do believe that we need to increase our patrols, not just in the pack. We can station some men to patrol outside the pack borders, not too far away. That way, we can tell if something unusual is going on and we can prevent it from getting to our pack"
I nodded in agreement.
"We should double our patrols, both in and out of the pack. Note that down" I said "Anyone else?"
"What about our access points?" someone else said "Maybe we should restrict entry and exit to only essential personnel."
"You're suggesting a strict checkpoint system?"
"Yes. Anyone entering or leaving our territory should be thoroughly vetted."
"We should also consider setting up traps or alarms around vulnerable areas. We can the killer before they even get close." another said
"The field guards should coordinate with the engineering team then" I said "A curfew too would suffice.
I was about to say something else when I received a mind link from someone. It was from Navi.
" Jax, I know you're in a meeting but I think you need to come see this" Navi said.
"What's going on?"
"It's your mate. She's unhinged. She's literally out of control"
"Navi, I'm busy. Take care of it"
"I don't want to get involved. I just want you to see who you're about to get married to. Come down, now"
For the past week, Trixie has been getting on everyone's last nerve in the palace. I got daily reports from people. She had only been in the palace for close to three weeks yet she had fought with almost all the workers. The palace staff were all scared of her.
Apart from that, she was demanding with the wedding preparations. She wanted everything her own way. She wanted a huge and lavish wedding. I didn't have an issue with that. I wanted to make her happy. But I would appreciate it if she wasn't rude to everyone in the process.
I sighed. What could she have done now?
"Gentlemen" I said "Excuse me. I'll be back in a few minutes"
"Yes Alpha" they chorused.
I left the board room and made my way downstairs. I didn't even have to look for her. As soon as I stepped on the last staircase, I heard what sounded like the breaking of glass. The sound was coming from the kitchen. What the hell was going on?
I walked to the kitchen. Navi stood at the kitchen entrance with a confused look on his face. Inside, I saw Trixie throw a plate, aiming for a maid's head but it hit the wall as the maid dodged just in time.
"How many times do I have to teach you to make Scrambled eggs?" Trixie screamed "You know nothing! You're useless, you hear me?"
The maid busted into tears.
"So fucking pathetic" Trixie said.
"Told you it was serious" Navi whispered to me.
"Trixie" I said "What's the meaning of this?"
Trixie rushed to me and pouted her lips.
"The maid keeps making mistakes with my food" Trixie said in a sad tone "I haven't eaten breakfast yet because of her"
"You can correct her without getting violent. What if the plate hit her head?"
Trixie's expression hardened "You're defending her?! I can't believe you"
I didn't have time for this. I was literally in the middle of a meeting. I would deal with Trixie later.
I shook my head, walking away from the scene. Trixie barked behind me. Navi followed me.
"She needs a damn exorcism" Navi said.
"Tell me about it"
Navi held my shoulder, stopping me in my tracks. I turned to face him.
"You can't ignore the signs, Jax" Navi said "She isn't right for you. She clearly just wants to be in power. She doesn't care about you. You deserve someone who genuinely loves you. Call it off before it's too late"
I stared into space, thinking about Navi's words. He was right about this. I had to do something before it all got out of hand.
I decided to do something that I should have done a long time ago. I was going to get to the bottom of this.
That night, when it was time for bed. I pretended to be asleep. I felt Trixie kiss my forehead before settling into bed beside me. I waited for a while to make sure she was fast asleep. I got up and looked at her.
When I confirmed that she was sleeping, I took the mate orb from a hidden spot and placed it under her pillow. I wanted to confirm that Trixie was who she really said she was. I should have done this sooner but I didn't bother because I trusted her.
I went back to that, hoping that Trixie didn't lie to me.
*
The next morning, I woke up early. I raised Trixie's pillow and checked the orb. It didn't glow. I looked at it in horror.
What the hell? How - how is this possible?
I took the orb and looked at it closer. It remained pale in my hands. This could only mean one thing. Trixie had been lying to me.
Trixie stirred and yawned. She opened her eyes and smiled at me.
"Hi honey" she said "Good morning"
I looked at her in disbelief "You have a lot of explaining to do"
