Chapter 5: Violet is Employed

Jeremy wanted only the best for his daughter Violet'. He thought if Viola also, very often but he knew that her mother had raised her under her influence and it was most likely that Viola would act more like her mother. It grieved him that the two sisters should be separated but he was tired of Valerie's discontentment and tantrums. If he had continued living with her, he was sure that he would have been dead.

Viola had been born a few short minutes after Violet but as they grew, Viola had always a Ted as though, she was older than Violet. She would take all of Violet's toys and refuse to share hers with Violet.

He had tried to stop that but his wife had always asked him to leave the sisters alone.

'She might grow up with that attitude, being selfish enough not to share her things with her twin but greedy enough to take all of Violet's things', Jeremy had complained.

'Viola will teach Violet to be smart and sharp. She is just too compliant like you. She has to become more exerting and who better to teach her that than her sister?' Valerie had quarried.

Jeremy had been apprehensive. Not wanting them to grow that way. She like Violet with her gentle and loving ways. Forgiving easily even when her sister snobbed her and refused to share things with her and trustingly giving her toys and clothes to her sister if she as much as indicated interest to have them.

He felt that it could be disastrous if they grew that way. Viola would end up ruining Violet's life and he wanted none of that.

This was one reason that made him agree to each of them parting ways with the twin they loved better.

Jeremy did not share his fear with anyone but he was still scared of Viola ruining Violet's life and happiness, more so now that her heartless mother had raised her and though he wished to see his daughter, he was not in a hurry to reunite the sisters until Violet had settled down comfortably and beyond Viola's reach.

Most times he would berate himself for harbouring such thoughts about his own daughter, Viola was still his daughter afterall and she might have improved with age but he still could not shake that feeling of apprehension that over and him anytime he thought about his two daughters together.

He felt that Damien was a good enough man for Violet but if Violet did not like him that way, then he was not going to force the issue. He had decided to let nature take it's course and lead Violet to her destiny but she would not find that destiny holed up in the house cooking for him, which was why he decided that she must work and not in the little office she had been preparing to go for interview in but in a bigger place that would give her a bigger and better opportunity and exposure.

To bad she did not like Damien but she could at least work there and meet with other men and hopefully fall in love with one of them and get to settle down. Only then would he really be at rest.

The experience she had had in her teens had harden her up a bit but he knew that she was still a great and kind kid.

So, though it might be against her wish, he would fir e her to take up the appointment at The Devon Pharmaceutical Company .

Violet wanted to argue with her father but she saw the hurt in his eyes when he felt that she wanted to go against him.

Since she hated seeing him hurt, she desisted from uttering any word of opposition about the job her father had accepted on her behalf.

The next day, Violet found herself in front of the Devon Pharmaceutical company against her wish but with a desire to bring a smile to her father's face and to show that Damien guy that she was not spinless. He must have thought that she would not have the guts to face him or work in his company but she would show that arrogant man.

Damien was there to introduce her to the other workers among which were Sandra Davis the financial analyst, Amanda Jones the sales clerk, Adam Barker the personnel manager, Clark Colt, the head of marketing among others.

Violet found her new colleagues friendly enough and she vowed to return their warmth with friendliness. She noticed that Sandra Davis felt a kind of animosity towards her. Violet could feel it oozing from Sandra to her.

She did not know why she should feel hostile to her. Violet looked at her thoughtfully. She could not recall meeting her anywhere, she doubted that they knew each other. So why did Sandra have such hard feelings towards her? She looked away and smiled at Amanda who looked friendly.

The men were civil, though Clark had a flirtatious glint in his eye. Violet felt that she would have to be careful of him. He reminded her so much of someone she wished to forget.

'Now that you have met everyone there is to meet', Damien her new employer said, looking at her disapprovingly, 'Let me show you to your office and intimate you on what your duties will be'.

Violet was seething. This was the first day in this company, she had not even been shown to her office yet and she already felt like keeping her distance from this man or hitting him with something.

How could he look so disapprovingly at her when she was yet to do anything wrong? She had just stepped into the company for goodness sake, not make an irrevocable mistake. Or maybe she had indeed made a mistake by coming to work for the man she hated at first sight.

He showed her to her office. 'I must say that I am surprised that you decided to take up the job. I was sure your father would not be able to convince you to start working here. But I must have misjudged the situation', he said looking at her with an amusing glint in his eyes and an arrogant tilt to his lips.

Violet knew that if she opened her mouth she was going to say something she might regret and she did not want her father to be disappointed in her, she had made him a promise after all to be good and endure the man. She needed the experience so that she could apply somewhere else confidently, some time in the future.

Damien was looking at her, amazed that she was not being as talkative as she had been the first day they had met. Was it because she wanted the job desperately or she was overwhelmed by his status?

His social standing did not mean much to him and money meant even less but he was hardworking and he worked hard to ensure that he never had to go crawling back to his father and brother, begging for charity.

What some did not know was that he was also a member of the force. An agent. His friends in the force thought that he came merely to see his army friends especially the head officers in the Barnes Area Division but he actually went to him to give him classified information and take up any assignment that required his attention.
