CHAPTER ONE: RUIN IN RAIN
ELLA
"Oh, baby," the voice hit my ears in familiarity. That voice! I knew it.
Out of curiosity, I ignored the clothes on the floor, my legs heavy as I walked the corridors and stopped at the half-open door that led to the bedroom.
"You are so sweet." Marcus's voice filled the entire room. My breath hitched in my throat as I looked around me in confusion. The handle turned cold underneath my palm as my palm sweated. I pushed the door open and on the bed, tangled and naked in the sheets. Marcus is on top, and Sofia is underneath him, her legs wrapped around his waist as her head is thrown backwards, her eyes rolling back in pleasure.
I stand still at the doorway as I watch my boyfriend of three years thrust himself violently into my best friend as she screams in pleasure, her fingers digging into his back. They were so engrossed in whatever this was that they had not noticed me. The smell of their intertwined fragrances rose bile-like up my throat into my mouth, leaving it bitter.
My heart raced as the plastic bag in my hand fell to the ground, and an apple thudded and rolled until I could no longer see where it had gone.
The movement stops, and they both turn to me. The sheets ruffled, and Marcus got off the bed in a hurry. Sofia lay there, chest out, as if she had been waiting for a day like this.
"Ella..." Marcus's voice trembled as he tried to cover himself up; his hand reached out to hold me.
My feet stumbled back as a gasp escaped my lips. "Ella...I can...I can explain," he stuttered, holding the blanket onto himself and trying to take a step toward me.
"Explain?" I pushed out the words from my mouth forcefully as my eyes trailed to Sofia, who was now using her elbow to prop her head so she could look at me. Her eyes were twinkling with mischief.
"Explain what? That this is a mistake or..." I trailed off, imagining what it could be. Marcus was my dream. He was supposed to be perfect. I had read and watched videos of women speaking of how they felt when they caught their partner cheating, but I could not understand them. I was always sure that they were overreacting, but now it felt like my heart was being ripped out of my chest at the same time my blood was surging aggressively through my veins.
"It was a..." He stopped himself, and with his head down, defeatedly, he added. "A mistake. "I did not intend to do it." He raised his head, and his eyes met mine.
"You did not intend to fall in bed?" I scoffed, and he nodded. "Oh my goodness!" I exclaimed angrily.
Sofia finally has some shame because she drops from the bed and pulls out the bedcovers, wrapping them over her chest and holding them underneath her with her armpits. "Marcus told me that..." She walked to him gently on a catwalk as her hand gently tapped on his bare chest, with her elbow on his shoulders. "That you weren't satisfying him enough, so I just thought..."
"To help me?" I asked. My heart was beating so fast that I was not even sure how I was still keeping my cool. I wanted to march up to them and slap them across the face.
"You figured it out — so why act surprised?" she finished in a sly voice. The way she stared at me, I could tell that she was the one who managed to seduce him. I was not trying to make an excuse for Marcus because he was as much at fault, but she wanted this. She did this. How had I not seen this side of her before now?
"Are you serious now?" My voice cracked out of my throat in a shake as my fingers fiddled with the ring on my finger. "Did this mean nothing to you?" I ask, pushing my finger in the air. "Did you think it was okay because..."
"I told you not to make it a big deal." Marcus's voice suddenly changed. His head was now in the air, and his chest was out as if he were in a parade. His lips were in a thin line. "It was a mistake; you do not need to act all high and mighty. It's not like you..."
His statement stopped with my hand connecting with his face. He turned his face to me with intensity flaring in his eyes. "HOW DARE YOU SLAP ME?"
"And I would do it over and over again. How dare you cheat on me and act as if you are in the right?" I asked, my voice shaking as I tried to sound as confident as I could.
"And you?" I turned to Sofia. She pushed her chest out, and her hand stood on her waist as if she was daring them to see what I was going to do. "How could you? You are my friend."
"Friends? Ella, please. Don't be so naive. We both wanted him, and I won," she sneered. She turned to him and ran her finger around his face, then gently touched his lips before leaning in with her tongue out, licking across his lips. I watched Marcus react in a way he never had to my touch.
"How long?" My voice cracked, and I was unable to hide it this time. My legs shake as I create distance between us, and she laughs, turning to me.
"Three months now, and we have been having the time of our lives." She tugged at the blanket he had been holding over himself, and it fell to his feet. Her hand trailed onto it and held his dick. It stood in her hand, and she fondled it gently, and then the action changed too much to become aggressive. "And we love it," she added.
"What do you think you are doing?" I screamed at them with my hand going up to cover my mouth, as I was gasping continuously. The room spun in response as they continued pleasuring themselves. She was not supposed to be confident when she was the one in the wrong.
I gasp as my knees buckle underneath me, and tears line my vision, making everything in the room blur immediately. I pull out the ring from my finger and throw it to the ground immediately.
"Why don't you give her the ring since you love her so much?" I asked, watching them almost begin to have sex once again in front of me. I turn on my heels and walk off. Even with Marcus calling after me, I do not stop.
As soon as I stepped onto the road, the clouds lit up, and thunder was heard. I looked at the sky and realised that it was going to rain. "Did the forecast say that this morning?" I ask, and the rain comes down at once.
I walk in the rain because maybe this was heaven's way of washing away the three years I had spent trying to be the best for Marcus, only for it to be thrown away. After all, he could not keep his dick in his pocket.
"Ouch!" I exclaimed loudly and looked up to see that I had bumped into an old woman. The tears had blurred my vision, making sure I did not see where I was going. The woman stayed on the ground, and I rushed down to help her. "I am so sorry," I murmur as I pull her back up and retrieve her umbrella.
"You seem sad," she murmured as she took the umbrella from me.
"Just life," I replied, not wanting to discuss it with her.
"You know, when life gives us a second chance...” She paused and added slowly, "It is not in the way we want it to be," she said. A thunder in the distance startled me, and by the time I looked ahead of me, she was gone.
Did I just imagine the scenario? Was the incident messing with my mind?
I shook my head and pushed myself, but the next thing I heard was a high screeching sound and the smell of burning tyres around me; a strange force hit me before my body was being lifted in the air dramatically. That woman's words rang in my mind more vividly than before.
"When life gives us a second chance, it is not in the way we want it to be."
