Chapter 6 Caked Encounter
Gosling watched as Dorian stepped towards the back where the noises from earlier came from. He turned to face Gosling and handed over the pie.
"I'll try to make sure things are okay, I'll be back." He said before disappearing into the back room.
Gosling glanced down at the pie in her hands. She was getting a bit hungry again. Sadly, there wasn't a knife in sight to even cut the pie. Her eyes glazed over the flour and icing covered door. They lingered on the backroom for a moment before she felt eyes staring at her. She whipped around to find many looking at her, some glanced away once caught.
She squirmed a little and left the building immediately. Too much attention for her. Outside, the car was still there. She debated if she should just wait in the car until Dorian returned rather than wait inside where people could stare at her. She knocked on the window gently from the other side of the driver and it rolled down right after, making her jump a bit.
"Hello...could you take this pie for a while? I don't want it to get cold but I wasn't sure what to do."
The driver took the pie without a word before she knew it, they had covered it with a steaming towel he had taken out of some compartment. Her head spun in confusion of how...advanced it seemed these people were.
"Well thank you." She earned a quick nod from them before the window rolled back up.
Suddenly the door behind her from the building swung open, causing her to almost stumble. Before turning around to see who it was a scent surrounded her. It was the one from before, the new one and she noticed now how faint it was. If she hadn't noticed the difference in it she may have mistaken them for Dorian.
Did she want to be seen? She probably already had been. She should have just gotten in the car. With a little peek she saw a tall young man, he was a lot darker than most of the people she's seen here so far, possibly even darker than her. She didn't notice her shoulders release the tension built up inside, relaxing by just that single detail. The young man was still foreign but held some familiarity.
He wasn't bald but had a very low cut compared to how Dorian's hair looked, and a different texture it seemed. His clothes were similar to what the commoners around here appeared to wear. Tan pants that looked like something workers would wear and a plain black shirt with short sleeves. Well now that shirt had flour, the apron he wore looked a lot worse.
She realized she may have been staring too long when he whipped around, his dark eyes meeting her own. The sudden fear had vanished when she noticed the flour on the side of his face. She bit her lip to keep from laughing at the stranger but it ended up hissing out.
He blinked at her for a moment before scowling. "You rich people here make me sick. Especially you non-Nightlans."
She blinked with her mouth agape for a moment before closing it. She opened it again to correct him but remembered she was masked, and there was a reason why she was.
"Now why is that?" She circled him and glanced at the door, waiting for Dorian's arrival.
She had already made her mistake, so she might as well ride this one out. If she needed to she would get into the car, but escaping now may make things worse.
The man seemed taken back once again. His eyebrows knitted together and before she could even blink, he was at her side.
"Because you all are too naive. Nightlans could crush you if they wanted, however and whenever. But who wants to repeat history?"
Her eyes flickered up to his, widening as her breathing quickened. "I would appreciate it if you gave me space."
"You aren't human ar-"
He was cut off short by being hurled across the street into the wall of a nearby building. Gosling turned to find Dorian had finally exited the building and was rushing towards her.
"Are you alright?" He glanced over at the man who was groaning as he lifted himself up slowly from the rubble.
"Did you do that?" Rushed out past her lips, practically squeezing the words together.
His eyebrows knitted together but soon their attention was back on the stranger who started marching over to them. Before the man could really do anything Dorian put a hand on his shoulder.
"Matt says you caused quite the mess today. Why don't you come with me so we can figure out what to do with you."
Gosling watched rage ignite in the man's eyes. "I won't be forced to do anything I don't want to do. I can help myself, but thanks." He pulled away from Dorian and his eyes focused on Gosling. "I'd be careful if I was you." With one more look at the two, he started to walk off muttering to himself.
She wondered where they were headed to next, today had been quite...eventful. While she tried to think of other things she did feel some guilt about laughing at the man. It seems he possibly was trying to warn her more than threaten her. She already knew to be cautious. Though, maybe she wasn't doing so enough.
While she was quite far from her uncle and her kind there was still a chance she could be found. Where she was now, was it even safe for her? And if not, where was she to go?
"What were you going to do to him?" Gosling asked when they were back in the car.
They both had helped themselves to a slice of the apple pie, turns out the driver had a knife in the car too. Dorian had placed his napkin with his slice down between them while Gosling started taking multiple bites out of hers.
Dorian sighed, laying his head against the car door and the window. "Not were, I'm still going to have to deal with him. Just later. Otherwise, my father may deal with it, and Ares doesn't know it yet but he doesn't want that."
