Chapter five: The new boss

I hopped off the car without thinking and started moving towards the hospital door in a daze.

More than before, I needed to get this baby out of me. Maybe it would get Derrick back to his senses.

The thought of Fiona ran through my mind. But my senses were dulled. The unbelieving part of me could not bring myself to accept it was my blood sister, Fiona Derrick, who was having a secret affair with.

Drew.

“Damn.”

I said so many harmful things to him when all he sincerely wanted to do was help. Maybe I should text him I'm sorry?

I ruffled my shaky hands into my bag and plucked out my phone from where it sat.

“Sit and wait for me,” Derrick ordered.

I sighed deeply as I sent the text message. And in the next three seconds, my phone began to ring.

My heart thumped a bit faster. Then I answered it and slowly lifted it to my ear.

“I'm the one who should be sorry, Rebecca,” he paused. Retracing his words.

“Mrs Rebecca.”

“I went too far”. "I could not control my hands, my emotions, my thoughts around you anymore and that significantly put your relationship in jeopardy." He said in rushed tones.

“And for that I am deeply sorry.”

Over the phone I could feel the tension erupting from his tone and the sincerity of his apologies and I shut my eyes once again.

I wished I could tell him how much just his call meant to me and how relieved it made me feel.

I hadn't realized the tears had begun to roll from my eyes again.

“Mrs Rebecca, ?” Drew's concerned voice cloaked my ears.

But the sobs had only grown deeper.

“Mrs Rebecca, speak to me …please.”

But i couldn't.

Drew would never approve of my aborting a baby I had fallen deeply in love with.

“Damn it! Rebecca”. "Tell me where the fuck you are!" His desperation struck me, and impulsively I cried out loud.

“The hospital! My voice shook.

I flung my other hand into my hair. Finger combing the stress that clamored within me.

Drew paused for some seconds without saying anything.”

“Just stay where you are okay,” he said.

“Don't come please.” I swallowed. Mentally cringing at such scenery that would unfold if

Derrick and Drew had to battle it out in the hospital.

“Oh there she is.” Derrick's voice filled the air. His grin reached from one end of his cheek to another as he approached the Doctor.

“I've got to go, Drew.” I took a deep breath.

“Please,,, don't come.”

“Rebecca wait….” His voice trailed off as I hung up the phone.

I quickly wiped my eyes as they approached.

Flashing a brilliant smile at both men, I stood up to exchange pleasantries.

“Are you okay, Mrs Derrick?” the doctor asked.

“Oh I'm fine, it's just the allergies, and I also caught a fly in my eye,” I said nervously.

“Oh, I see… Did you say a fly?” The doctor, a bit skeptical, said. “Well, shall we?”

“Yes, of course.” I responded rather too fast.

I was led to the changing room where i had to put on hospital wear and prepare my mind for the procedure.

There was absolutely no going back now. That was it.

“I felt a strong wave of disappointment and guilt in me as I massaged the little angel in my belly there in the changing room.

“Mrs Rebecca?” The doctor called out, in reference to the amount of time I spent in the changing room.

“Just one second.” I lifted my voice in false enthusiasm.

When I came out, I felt Derrick's arm wrap around my waist. He smiled at me so lovingly i could almost swear it was a dream or whatever happened prior was only a nightmare.

He then pulled me into his embrace, turning me around.

A smile escaped my lips and then i gasped.

“Derrick?” I said barely in a whisper with a glint of hope in my voice.

He then whispered into my ear.

“Nice acting Rebecca”. "Very soon you will no longer be a pregnant cheat," he said.

I felt all the color pale out of my skin as the words fell on my ears, but the doctor stood grinning sheepishly.

“Such a happy young couple,” said the doctor.

“Well Mr Derrick, if you would excuse us. We would like to begin the procedure.”

“Oh Doctor Felix, please do your thing,” he said gracefully and took the exit.

From the semi-transparent door, I could see someone's arms wrapped around his neck and my breath hitched once again. I lifted my head in horror to see who it was.

“Ma'am, this baby is three months old. "And I'm sure you are aware of the great risks involved.

“As you signed in the consent form,” the doctor interrupted.

I was not aware of any consent form. It must have been Derrick who signed it, I thought to myself.

“Great risks such as?” I asked.

“Loss of life, loss of the entire reproductive system and the list goes on.”

“Did you say loss of the entire reproductive system?” I asked barely in whispers.

And he nodded affirmatively.

“And what is the percentage of a successful operation?” I asked lowly.

“Seventy percent,” he answered. “So would you like to proceed?”

Well, that was fair.

My mind drifted to Derrick, my once-loving husband and my heart melted.

Derrick would have done the same for me, I thought to myself.

“I'm eager” I smiled. Laying my head on the hospital bed with memories of Derrick flooding my head.

The doctor began to prep his equipment and just then, a nurse barged into the room and whispered into the doctor's ears.

His eyes widened, and he abandoned me in the operation room.

“What's going on?” I asked, getting down from bed. To see what was going on outside.

Nurses muttered among themselves wide-eyed.

I quickly got into their midst. “What's going on?” I asked, genuinely curious.

“Excuse me ma'am, you are not meant to be here,” they answered, but I insisted.

“We just learned that a billionaire medical doctor just bought the facility,” they said astonishingly.

Just then, my eyes caught Dr Felix.

“Dr Felix!” I ran to him.

“Good gracious, I've been searching all over for you," he said.

“Well, what's going on? "Can we begin now?”I asked non-hesitantly.

“Actually, your appointment at this hospital has been canceled.”

“What!” my voice rose. “Why?…by whom?”

“By the new boss.” said Dr Felix.
