Chapter 6 Nelson Attends the Funeral
Nelson tightly held Jennifer's hand; he needed her support at this moment. He hadn't returned to his hometown since leaving sixteen years ago. This return was to witness the burial of his former partner, and also the first time in sixteen years that he would see his daughter.
"Nelson?" He quickly heard someone calling his name. Turning around, he saw his best old friend.
"Edward," Nelson muttered his name as he walked over, "it's been so long since we've seen each other."
Edward sighed and approached the two. He didn't want to see them, but he had no choice. "Are you both going to Amy's funeral?" he asked.
Nelson replied, "Yes, we're going together."
"I thought you wouldn't come back. After all, you've been away for fifteen years," Edward muttered, glancing at Nelson and his new partner from the corner of his eye. He was still angry with him.
Nelson couldn't explain himself; it was a fact, and he could only gesture to Jennifer beside him. "This is my new partner, Jennifer."
"Pleased to meet you, Alpha Edward," Jennifer said politely.
Edward looked at her, nodding slightly. Then he turned back to Nelson, narrowing his eyes. "You should tell me why you're here," he asked Nelson. The oppressive feeling of the Alpha peaked at this moment.
Nelson swallowed hard, took a deep breath, and said, "Amy reopened the mental link and told me that Emma needs me. She wants me to take care of Emma. I came this time to take her home."
Edward tightened his jaw. He knew Emma wouldn't want this, but perhaps it was the best choice for Emma now. He didn't want to admit it, but that's just how life is.
"Emmie wouldn't want this; she's never seen you," he muttered. "She will refuse to go with you."
It was clear he wanted to say more, but some words seemed to stick in his throat.
He began fiddling with his fingers. He had been Nelson's best friend for many years. He understood his every move and hesitation, which made Nelson uneasy.
"But..." There was a turning point, and Nelson asked, "But what?"
He glanced at Nelson again.
"But she has to leave," he muttered. "Her financial situation is not good, and I can't help much."
Nelson realized what he meant; cancer treatment costs a lot of money.
"Is she very poor?" Jennifer suddenly asked, and Edward widened his eyes at her. Nelson thought, "This is not good, Jennifer. You shouldn't have said that to Edward."
"I just want to know what we're dealing with. Maybe she still has unpaid bills, and I need to know all of that. I can't just give without conditions; she's not my child."
"She's in a bit of trouble," Edward squinted at Jennifer. He disliked this woman's attitude towards Emma. She seemed very resentful, and he knew she didn't like Emma. She had made that clear in just a few sentences. He didn't want Emma to leave with this woman from the Blue Halo Pack. "But it's only a little, and it's within Nelson's means."
Nelson sighed and looked around. Jennifer was often nervous, and he couldn't do anything about it. He wasn't the Alpha of the Silver Moon Pack, and he had no power to stop her, even though Edward seemed angry.
He looked around for traces of his daughter, but there were none. She hadn't come. He was very disappointed.
"What about Emma? She should be here for her mother's funeral."
Edward also searched the crowd. "I don't know where she went. I'll send someone to look for her. She needs to appear as soon as possible."
Patrick approached; he didn't like crowded places. He always avoided being surrounded by people. He looked cold and distant, with his hands in his coat pockets. No one tried to approach him. Nelson didn't know if he should seek his help. He was not only Jennifer's son now, but also his Alpha.
Meeting Nelson's gaze, Patrick frowned subconsciously, "What's going on?"
Edward didn't know who he was. "Who are you?"
Nelson answered for him, "This is Patrick, the Alpha of our Silver Moon Pack."
Patrick nodded, "Hello."
Edward thought, "He's already an Alpha at such a young age. Young people really are more talented." He asked, "Have you seen a sixteen-year-old girl? She's Nelson's daughter, Emma. She should be here for the funeral, but I can't find her."
Patrick wasn't usually interested in other people's private affairs, but he was very curious about this unknown sister.
"I think I saw her. I will go look for her." Ignoring Jennifer's displeased gaze, he left.
Emma knew that she should be ather mother's funeral right now. But she couldn't, she was in great pain. She had nowhere to go and didn't want to be found, so she wandered aimlessly in the forest.
She wanted to call Florence, but then remembered that Florence had been on night duty last night and was probably still sleeping.
The world seemed so vast, yet there was no place for her. She sat on the smoothest rock in the forest, a rock she had carefully polished with sandpaper, and carved her name at the bottom when she was young. It was the only thing she felt she truly belonged to.
She climbed onto the rock, looked at the sky, birds flew by, and the tranquil blue and white sky returned to silence. She wanted to rest for a while, but her mind kept replaying Nelson's words.
Emma grew increasingly agitated; she despised Nelson and even more so, his new family. She would never live with those people, no matter what!
"Hey, there. Is anyone here?" A tall, handsome boy with black curly hair stood before her. He looked young, probably not older than twenty. His dark, deep eyes were even more captivating than his hair. Emma was almost mesmerized.
But in a moment, she realized he had been talking to her.
"There's no one here except me. Do you like this rock too? Sorry, it's mine," she mumbled, climbing down. It wasn't a pleasant feeling to be seen in such a disheveled state by such a handsome stranger. Even though she had no interest in romance, she still occasionally stole glances at handsome boys on the street with Florence.
"It's nothing. I just became an orphan, and I don't want to stay there. Why did you come to this forest? I haven't seen you in the Blue Halo Pack; are you from another pack?" she asked.
The boy nodded. "I came to this forest to find someone. I didn't expect to find someone lying on a rock so soon."
Emma was curious about the person he was looking for. "Who are you looking for?"
"My sister. Have you seen any other girl in this forest?"
Emma shook her head. "Very few people come into this forest. If there was a younger girl here, I would remember. Right now, it's just me and you, searching for someone."
