Chapter 6 The Savior

Xavier was equally surprised and quickly asked, "Old Hughes, do you have any more of these herbs? If you do, we'd like to buy as much as you can offer!"

That way, Lance might not have to suffer so much.

Old Hughes chuckled, "Do you think they can be easily bought? I said they're rare herbs."

"But..." Seeing a glimmer of hope, Xavier was reluctant to give up.

Old Hughes continued, "It was purely by chance. The girl who supplies me with herbs happened to come across a few. I asked if she had any more, but she said she didn't."

Xavier's disappointment was evident, while Lance's expression remained unchanged, though a flicker of hope faded from his eyes.

He had been suffering from this condition for many years.

Despite seeking out the best doctors worldwide, there was no hope for a complete cure but only temporary relief.

Old Hughes had been the only one able to offer some respite. Now that they had discovered these miraculous herbs, Lance naturally wanted to buy more for research, hoping to develop a permanent cure.

But with hope once again dashed, Lance seemed accustomed to the disappointment.

Old Hughes, seeing their disappointment, offered some comfort. "Alright, even though we only have a few herbs, they should last for a few months. At least, during this time, your pain will be lessened. When I see that girl again, I'll ask if she has more. For now, rest here and don't use your brain."

Old Hughes thought for a moment and then scolded, "Your condition can't be fully treated with my skills. If you could find the elusive doctor Gunner Martinez, there might be a chance for a cure! Until then, you need to take better care of yourself. You're human, not a god. Pushing yourself too hard will only make things worse!"

Lance nodded.

He had long sent people to search for Gunner Martinez, but without any luck. He was beginning to doubt whether she even existed.

Over time, he had lost hope.

Due to his weakness, Lance soon drifted back to sleep.

Meanwhile, after dinner, Deanna cleaned up the dishes and said, "Gregory, Chloe, stay home and keep your Great-Grandma company. Don't run around, okay? Mommy's going to the herb garden and will be back soon."

The two little ones nodded obediently, "We know, Mommy."

After tidying up, Deanna took off her apron and headed out.

The herb garden was lush with greenery, filled with rare herbs.

These were all left by the master who had taught her medicine.

For years, her master had tried to cultivate these rare herbs but without success. Disheartened, she left to wander the world.

Her whereabouts were now unknown.

Deanna had managed to cultivate a portion of the herbs only this year. However, the herbs were not yet fully mature and had a high fatality rate, which was why she told the pharmacy owner she had no more when he inquired.

Looking at the young herb plants, Deanna knelt and gently touched them with her fingertips, sighing.

It seemed misfortune had struck at the worst possible time. Apart from these herbs, she had no other means to raise money.

Determined, she decided to ask the pharmacy owner tomorrow if he would buy the herbs.

She hoped they would fetch a good price.
