Chapter 3 Taking Full Responsibility
"Mommy, Chloe and I are okay," Gregory said calmly.
Deanna felt a wave of relief wash over her. It was evident that the driver behind had braked just in time, sparing them any serious harm.
"Sweeties, Mommy is going to check what happened. Stay in the car and be good," Deanna instructed before unbuckling her seatbelt and stepping out of the car.
At the same moment, the driver of the car behind them also got out. He examined the damage and anger flashed across his face. Seeing Deanna, he demanded, "How do you drive? Stopping suddenly in the middle of the road!"
"I'm terribly sorry. My car broke down," Deanna apologized sincerely, glancing back at her own car.
The rear end was badly dented. When she turned to look at the other car, her face went pale. It was a Maybach, a limited edition model worth at least four million dollars.
Deanna knew the accident was her fault and that she would be responsible for the damages.
The thought of the compensation made her heart sink.
Her family had been struggling financially due to her grandmother's illness, with little savings to fall back on. This repair would cost at least a hundred thousand dollars, and she didn't have insurance to cover it. How would she be able to raise so much money?
Sweat beaded on Deanna's forehead as she bowed repeatedly, apologizing, "I am so, so sorry."
Apologizing was all she could do.
The driver, hands on his hips, frowned at her and said, "What's the use of just apologizing? I was driving normally. This is your responsibility. We'll have to wait for the police and the insurance company to sort out the compensation."
Deanna felt a surge of panic. She rubbed her hands together, looking distressed. "I... I don't have that much money."
The driver narrowed his eyes, scrutinizing her. "You're not trying to weasel out of this, are you?"
Deanna shook her head. "No, no, that's not my intention."
Just then, her children got out of the car. Hearing about the need for a large compensation, they grew worried, knowing their family's situation. They both called out, "Mommy."
The little ones hurried over to Deanna, clutching at her clothes with anxious eyes.
Deanna patted their heads reassuringly before turning back to the driver. "Sir, I'm not trying to avoid responsibility. I admit it was my fault. But could you give me some leeway? I honestly can't pay such a large amount all at once. Could you give me your phone number and let us perhaps arrange a payment plan?"
The driver frowned at her proposal.
Seeing his reaction, the children quickly joined in, pleading, "Sir, we really don't have that much money. Please, be kind and make an exception. We won't run away from this."
Chloe clasped her hands together and pleaded, "Pretty please."
The driver's expression softened slightly at the sight of the adorable children. He no longer seemed as angry but was still uncertain. "You'll have to wait here," he said finally.
He turned and went to the back of his car, tapping on the window.
The window slowly rolled down, and the driver respectfully addressed the person inside, "Sir... how should we handle this situation?"
