CHAPTER 1

AURORA’S POV

“Wake up, you lazy ass!” I heard in my sleep as what seemed like a pile of clothes was dumped on my body.

“Wake up, ugly duckling!” I heard again as another round of clothes landed on my bed.

I tiredly opened my blurry eyes and used the back of my palm to clear my vision. Piles of clothes covered my bed, all waiting for me to wash them.

The clothes belonged to those young adults, Harper and Aria. Harper is eighteen, while Aria is sixteen.

After all my endless chores yesterday and sleeping very late, I still had to wash all this stinking stuff called clothes and do other chores all by myself.

The washing machine, dishwasher, and dryer had been packed inside an old room by Fiona in order to make me suffer. Even the vacuum cleaner had been put away.

That should tell you how cruel Fiona could be. It’s not like we aren’t rich enough. We are very rich, but I stopped enjoying those riches after my dad got lost.

My mom has been gone since I was five, and ever since Dad married Fiona, life hasn’t been easy for me.

At times, I wish for death, but even death has turned its back on me.

Back when Dad was around, Fiona controlled him to the extent that she is now in charge of the company in Baltimore, Maryland.

Now that I am alone with her, I don’t dare complain about anything. She would starve me for a week. She’s even threatening to stop me from going to school, but England doesn’t allow students to stay home. The authorities would arrest the adult responsible for them if it were discovered, and Fiona would rather die than spend a minute in jail.

I know what Fiona is capable of doing, so I would rather keep quiet and endure. Maybe this is my destiny.

School has been my only place to breathe freely, even though I get troubled there too. Thanks to the annoying weekend, I have to stay at home, and thank God tomorrow is Monday.

My life is bad luck. Yeah, I said that.

I got out of bed and walked to the bathroom to brush my teeth before starting my daily routine. I swept and mopped the floors, washed the dishes, cleaned the toilet, swept the large compound, trimmed the flowers in the garden, and watered them.

I was already exhausted when I took the clothes to the washroom. I couldn’t imagine washing them at that point because I was really hungry and thirsty, but unfortunately, I wasn’t allowed to taste anything until I finished all my chores.

Just as I was about to start washing, Fiona called my name.

“Aurora! Get your stinking ass here!” Fiona shouted.

I ignored her and tiredly walked to the dining room.

“Aurora, come qui…” she started to say when she saw me approaching.

“Aurora, I have warned you not to let me call you twice. Do you know how exhausting it is? Let this not happen again. Have I made myself clear?” she asked.

“Yes, ma’am,” I managed to say, still waiting for the real reason she had called me.

“Now go to my laundry basket and get all the clothes there. Make sure you wash them sparkling clean,” she ordered.

I nodded and headed for her room when Harper’s voice interrupted me.

“Aurora, wash mine properly too because one of them is the dress I’m wearing to tomorrow’s party.”

I nodded again and started walking away when Aria spoke.

“I wonder why she’s walking like she has a boil on her butt.”

They all burst into laughter.

I wonder what joy they get from punishing me. They hate me for no good reason.

Just look at how they were devouring all the food in the fridge without even asking if I wanted any. After washing the clothes, I would still have to cook.

Harper and Aria liked me when we were younger, but I remember how Fiona turned them against me by filling their heads with all sorts of nonsense.

**

After washing the clothes, I cooked and finally ate. Luckily, no one was home. Fiona had obviously gone to visit her sugar boy because she never worked on Sundays, while Harper and Aria had gone to some faraway kingdom.

So I had time to rest, and thank God for that.

I took a bath and went to my room for a nap because that was all I needed at that moment. I slept for what felt like hours because when I woke up, it was already dark. Nobody had woken me, which meant none of them were back.

I yawned loudly and checked the time on my phone. It was 6:06 p.m.

I sluggishly walked to the living room and switched to a music channel when a call came in.

It was Reeve.

“Hey, girl! How are you doing today?” he asked.

I smiled.

“Reeve, I’m fine. At least they all left the house.”

“You mean Fiona and her ducklings?”

“Ducklings indeed,” I replied, laughing hard.

“Aura, guess what?” he asked excitedly.

Yeah, he called me Aura. It’s short for Aurora.

“Just spit it out!”

“Jen noticed me today! Like, I could see the love in his eyes!”

He sounded genuinely excited.

“Lucky you, bro. Let’s see how it goes tomorrow.”

“Oh yeah, I can’t wait. Seriously.”

“Reeve, I have to hang up now.”

“Aight. Kiss kiss.”

“Muah!” I replied before hanging up.

Yeah, Reeve is gay, and I love my kind of friends. Although I only have two friends, one reason I love gay guys is because they understand true friendship, while some girls can be very loud-mouthed.

If you think regular guys are better, one day they’ll probably betray you. So I’ll stick with my friends.

Have you met Goldie? That guy is a complete menace. He’s crazy, but you’d love him.

I stayed awake all night waiting for those good-for-nothing blockheads, but it seemed they weren’t coming back. So I decided to do tomorrow’s chores that night to avoid being late.

It was morning.

I quickly finished my bathroom routine, wore my jean cross-belt dress with a shirt underneath, and tied my hair into a neat ponytail.

I ran downstairs, grabbed a cup of milk and some hot cookies, prepared Fiona and her daughters’ breakfast, and rushed out of the compound.

I was about to walk to school, which was about ten miles away. I wish Fiona would just have a heart and let me use one of the cars.

I had already gone quite far when a very expensive-looking car deliberately splashed water on me.

What the heck?!

It didn’t stain my clothes, but I was really embarrassed because the area was crowded.

“Hey! Stop and let me teach you a lesson!” I shouted at the disappearing car.

Everyone burst into laughter, making me even more embarrassed.

I was so humiliated that I wished the earth would just open up and swallow me. Who was that jerk, and how dare he?

That idiot had completely ruined my day.

I quietly continued my journey to school. I arrived just ten minutes before class started, so I headed straight to the lecture hall and sat down with the other students.

It was an incredibly boring class. All the lecturer did was tell random stories, and some students were already slipping out of the room.

Finally, the class ended. I had no other lectures for the day, and I couldn’t imagine going home so soon. I needed some peace of mind.

I walked beneath the umbrella tree opposite the convenience store and sat under it. I hadn’t seen Goldie or Reeve today, and I really needed a friendly chat.

I pulled my phone from my back pocket and was about to dial a number when I heard someone clapping mischievously, followed by a masculine voice chuckling devilishly.

I slowly looked up and saw Clark and the group of fools he called friends.

I glared at him angrily. His presence disgusted me.

“Clark, what do you want?” I asked sternly.

“Oh, quit that look and tell me how nice your morning bath was because I’m sure you didn’t bathe this morning,” he said.

His friends burst into laughter.

That was when my mind raced back to the incident from earlier.

So it was him. This idiot!

I should have known.

Remembering how embarrassed I had been and how everyone laughed at me made my blood boil. I stood up and slapped him hard across the face.

The slap left both him and his friends stunned and attracted the attention of nearby students.

“How dare you do something like that and still have the nerve to come here and joke about it? Clark, who do you think you are? Some kind of god? Because the last time I checked, you’re nothing more than a rich, spoiled playboy!”

I snapped.

He stared at me expressionlessly while rubbing his reddened cheek.

Students had already begun recording us, which normally would have made me nervous because I hated the idea of my worst moments ending up on social media.

But right then, I didn’t care.

“Look, Clark, I’m not some girl you can mess with and get away with it. Don’t you ever cross my path again.”

I turned and walked away from the crowd.

What the heck?!
