Chapter 2 The Empty Operating Room

I didn’t know how long I stayed in that basement.

There was more and more blood.

Everything under me was soaked through.

Just as I started drifting in and out of consciousness, the iron door suddenly flew open.

It wasn’t Lina.

It wasn’t the bodyguards.

It was the family’s private doctor, **Dr. Gray**.

The second he saw me, his face went white.

“Camilla? Why are you here?”

“The godfather said you were resting in the VIP room and waiting to deliver at any time.”

I tried to speak, but no sound came out.

I could only point weakly at my stomach, tears streaming down my face.

Dr. Gray rushed over and crouched beside me.

The second his hand touched my belly, he sucked in a sharp breath.

“You’re fully dilated. Your water already broke. And you’re hemorrhaging.”

“You need surgery now.”

He tried to lift me, but the second my body moved, a hot rush spilled between my legs.

Blood.

A huge amount of blood.

Dr. Gray’s hands started shaking.

He turned and shouted toward the hallway.

“Help! Somebody get in here. Severe maternal hemorrhage!”

The corridor was completely empty.

No answer.

This private clinic was fully owned by the Rossi family. Tonight, for Sophia’s delivery, they had cleared the place out.

All medical staff had been sent to the third-floor delivery suite to stand by for her.

Dr. Gray pulled out his phone to call for help, but there was no signal in the basement.

He clenched his jaw.

“I’ll carry you upstairs. Stay with me.”

He picked me up and staggered out.

The staircase was steep and dark.

Every step jolted through me so hard I thought I would die.

I could feel the baby dropping lower, but the leftover drug kept my contractions broken and uneven.

That horrible half-stopped labor made me want to die on the spot.

“Dr. Gray...” I grabbed at his collar, barely able to speak. “Please save my baby. Please.”

“You’re both going to make it. Hold on.”

He finally made it to the first floor and ran for the operating room.

But the second we reached it, both of us froze.

The operating room doors were wide open.

Inside, it was empty.

The surgical lights, the table, the monitors, the oxygen machine, every single piece of medical equipment was gone.

Only an empty room and a few power outlets left in the walls.

Dr. Gray stood there like stone.

I heard a broken sound come from his throat, like someone was strangling him.

“How is this possible...”

“I checked the equipment this afternoon...”

Footsteps came from the far end of the hallway.

Lina walked over with two nurses.

When she saw us, she raised a brow.

“Dr. Gray, what are you doing here?”

“Sophia is upstairs in the delivery suite. She’s about to give birth. Why did you come down?”

Dr. Gray pointed at the empty operating room, his voice shaking.

“Where is the equipment? Where did it all go?”

Lina looked innocent.

“It got moved upstairs.”

“Sophia is carrying the family heir. She may need a C-section. She gets the best equipment. If something goes wrong, how could an ordinary operating room be enough?”

Then she looked at me and smiled.

“So, my dear sister-in-law is finally in labor?”

“You’ll have to wait. Sophia isn’t done yet.”

“Just hold it a little longer. What’s the big deal?”

I looked at her perfect makeup and remembered six months ago, when she linked her arm through mine while we were shopping and said sweetly, “You’re so good to me, Camilla. Better than a real sister. I’ll take care of you forever.”

Back then, I’d pitied her for losing her mother young.

I even bought her a custom bracelet worth over a hundred thousand.

Now it felt like the cruelest joke in the world.
