Chapter 16: The Shadow Between Them

The days started to blend together in a way Mara hadn’t expected within the villa’s cold atmosphere. Wake. Train. Watch. Wait.

Elias met her in the courtyard each morning just after sunrise. His training was no longer just about how to fall or how to hit. It was about awareness. Instinct. The space between a breath and a decision.

“Your mind is your first weapon,” he told her one morning as they stood near the dry fountain. “Your body is only the last.”

He taught her to notice the small things—the way a guard’s posture shifted when someone unfamiliar approached, the flicker in someone’s eyes before they lied, the weight of a silence that felt intentional.

She was learning to see the invisible threads that connected everyone in the villa, the subtle hierarchy, the unspoken alliances.

And Damon was always watching.

He never interrupted. He stood in doorways, leaned against archways, a silent observer. His presence felt like a weight on her mind, making it hard to focus. She sensed his gaze as if it was a physical touch—intense, possessive, and a bit unsettling.

One afternoon, after a session where Elias had taught her how to disarm someone using the element of surprise, Damon finally stepped out of the shadows.

Elias gave a slight nod and slipped away, leaving Mara and Damon alone in the courtyard.

Damon’s eyes were dark, and his expression was unreadable. “You’re improving,” he said.

“Elias is a good teacher.”

“He is.” Damon stepped closer, his voice dropping. “But don’t trust him more than me.”

The words were the same as before, but this time they carried a heavier meaning.

“Why do you keep saying that?” Mara asked, meeting his gaze. “If he’s so trustworthy, why warn me?”

“Loyalty can be bought or broken,” Damon replied, his jaw tightening. “I trust him to keep you safe. But I don’t fully trust him with your trust. Remember whose side you're on, Mara—it's mine. Always mine.”

Without waiting for a response, he turned and walked back toward the house, leaving her alone in the cool air, his warning lingering between them.

Whose side am I on?

The problem was, she was starting to forget where the sides were drawn. Elias’s lessons felt like they were for her. Damon’s protection felt like it was for him.

that evening, as Mara walked toward her room, she spotted Isla arranging fresh linens in the hallway. Their eyes met briefly in the reflection of a shiny silver vase.

For a moment, neither moved. Then, Isla quickly looked down and finished her task, slipping away without saying a word.

But later, when Mara went to her bedside table for a book, she found it. Another note, folded small and tucked beneath the lamp base.

Her hands were steady as she unfolded it.

He’s lying to you. The safe is behind the painting. Look.

— I

Mara stared at the note, feeling a cold chill run through her.

Who was "he"? Damon? Elias?

The safe is behind the painting.

She knew exactly which painting the note referred to—the large, haunting portrait of Damon’s father hanging in the study.

A safe. Secrets.

Her mind raced, connecting the dots Elias had helped her see. Damon’s intense warnings. Elias’s serious demeanor. Isla’s fearful glances.

One of them was lying.

And for the first time, Mara realized she had to find out who the deceiver was.
