Chapter 2: The Theft of the Jansen Family Gene Pool
Tears tumbled from her eyes, dropping onto Lucian's pant leg. He could clearly feel the growing dampness. Was this woman truly dim-witted, or was she just faking it?
"Don't play tricks in front of me, or I'll kick you out immediately once we get out of here."
He turned on the flashlight on his phone, illuminating the elevator. Angelica saw her reflection in the wall. She was kneeling on the ground, her head stuck between his long legs. The position was incredibly awkward and embarrassing. Her face turned beet red, almost as if it would start bleeding. Like a slippery eel, she slid her head down, twisted left and right, and finally freed herself.
"Mr. Jansen, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I wasn't playing any tricks. I couldn't see anything and really thought I was stuck..."
She bent down at a perfect right angle, apologizing over and over again. They say that pregnancy can make a woman a bit scatterbrained. And here she was, barely pregnant, and already acting like she'd lost her marbles.
Lucian loosened his collar; this woman's actions were making him feel hot. "What secret do you have to tell me?"
Angelica dared not say anything now. He clearly misunderstood, thinking she was harassing him. If he ever discovered that his sperm had accidentally fertilized her egg, he might explode with anger and wring her neck.
"I... I just wanted to say that even though you've only been in your position for a short time, everyone admires you greatly."
Lucian's lips curled into a mocking smile. He had heard such flattery many times before; it held no novelty for him.
"Don't be slick. Focus more on your work."
"Yes, you're right. I'll remember that."
Angelica shrank into a corner, reflecting on her actions. Finally, the elevator resumed normal operation. She scurried out like a frightened mouse, disappearing down the hallway in an instant. Life is full of unexpected events, but today she had encountered far too many!
Lucian had just entered his office when he received a call from a subordinate. The Jansen family gene pool had been stolen. His stored sperm had been taken! A fierce light flashed in his eyes as he immediately rushed back to Jansen Manor.
At that moment, Linda was sharing good news with Mrs. Jansen, who was brimming with joy. Two years ago, Lucian had been attacked by a mysterious snake in the Amazon jungle. Although he survived, the venom affected the quality of his sperm. Full recovery could take an unknown number of years. Fortunately, he had stored his sperm before the trip. Mrs. Jansen had always worried about not having a grandchild, but now she was finally at ease.
Lucian's face was cold and grim. "How could you do such a thing behind my back? Isn't this too much?"
Mrs. Jansen grabbed her son's hand. "I did this all for you. Your father has four sons, but I only have you. Although you've taken over Jansen Group, your three brothers are still eyeing your position covetously. You need to have an heir for them to give up."
She placed her other hand on Linda's belly. "The procedure was successful; Linda is pregnant. You should take her to get a marriage certificate tomorrow. Keep the pregnancy a secret to protect the child from harm until it's almost time for birth."
Linda looked shy but was scheming inside. She had already planned to kill Angelica after she gave birth and take the child for herself so that no one would know the child wasn't hers.
Lucian gave her a cold glance and called a subordinate over. "Take her upstairs for a pregnancy test."
Linda was utterly terrified. Her body trembled so violently that she almost tumbled off the sofa. Panic welled up inside her as she thought, if they conduct the test right now, her well-crafted lie would surely be brought to light.
She quickly turned to Lucian, her voice laced with desperation. "Lucian, do you really think there could be an error in the hospital's examination? There's absolutely no need for another one."
"I want to check personally."
Lucian's eyes flashed with sharp coldness as if he could see through all her secrets.
Her face turned pale. "My stomach suddenly hurts; I want to go home and rest."
She stood up to leave but was grabbed by Lucian and forced upstairs by his subordinates.
The result came quickly: negative!
Linda let out a sob and started crying. "I'm sorry, the procedure failed. I didn't want to worry Mrs. Jansen, so I lied."
She would never reveal that another woman was pregnant; otherwise, what if Lucian married that woman?
"My grandson is gone?" That was her son's only healthy gene. Mrs. Jansen was so shocked she fainted.
Lucian quickly helped her to rest in her room and arranged for subordinates to investigate at the hospital.
He knew how much trouble Linda could cause; he didn't believe a word she said.
The truth was soon uncovered.
"Sir, the procedure did not fail. Due to a doctor's mistake, your genes were implanted into another woman who is now more than a month pregnant."
He handed Lucian the woman's information.
Seeing the innocent face in the photo, Lucian was deeply shaken. It was her!
The entire afternoon, Angelica felt dazed and confused. The boss would surely find out the truth soon. Was he planning how to deal with her and the child in her womb?
There was no need to work overtime today. As she left the company and headed towards the subway station, a bald man approached, pressing a knife against her back.
"Stay quiet and come with me, or I'll kill you right here."
