Chapter 1
Rowland
The Italian suit clung to my body just like the way I like it. I had chosen it even though I hated this night and what was to come. If there was something I could do to make the night unachievable, I certainly would have given the world to make it do. I turned around again, making the twinkling lights from the chandelier add some fine tone to the color of the suit.
I know this is the part where I am supposed to smile at my reflection but I couldn't. Instead, what I had on was a deep frown adorning my forehead. I tried to force myself to smile but no matter how I tried, it looked like I was being forced to eat my own waste product.
“You need to smile man, " my friend Darren said as he walked out of the bathroom, still in his brief. “With that scowl, you'll definitely be full of wrinkles before the day ends, and we wouldn't want that right?” He asked jokingly.
“Ofcourse, I would and it would be my father's fault for making me age so quickly. Why the hell is he thinking about getting a new wife. At what age exactly? He should be thinking about his death, not bedding some woman!” I said in frustration and the line in my head deepens.
“You can't blame him. It's been a decade since his wife ,your mother, died. It's about time he finds love to be honest. Everyone deserves a chance to love again no matter their age. The fact that he's getting old doesn't mean he needs to die Rowland. Let his love life bloom” he said again
“Are you seriously taking sides with him? My mother died because of his waywardness. Ten years after her death, he's taking a new wife? Frankly speaking, he has no business with any woman at all if you ask me. I was barely a teen when she died and I've had to learn to grow up without a mother's love. What's the essence of taking one now, to satisfy is sexual urge? I asked.
“Your anger is justified but would you prefer he goes around gallivanting with women than settling down with one? Cut the man some slacks, you and I know what loneliness could do to a man,” Darren said. I turned to him to give him a reply to his statement but a knock sounded on the door. I didn't need anyone to tell me that it was my father because the handle of the door twitched and the door opened, revealing my father,Cary Johnson.
The air in the room.changed from the free and harmless conversation in the room to a dark, strong and powerful one. I noticed that he had put extra efforts in getting ready because his hair was neatly combed and his bespoke suit was well fitted. He took a long look at me and gave Darren a nod.
“Rowland, Brenda has arrived. I'm sure I don't need to remind you that you have to be on your best behavior this evening because this is important to me. I don't need any of your childish behavior today, at least” he added.
“I'm always on my best behavior, dad. It's you who always brings out the other side of me, like how you are so keen on getting married to an old hag,” I smirked and scoffed.
My statement didn't seem to cut him off guard because he walked into the room properly and dipped his hands in his pocket looking me in the eyes. I knew he was going to diss me as usual and I too was ready for it, so I looked him in the eyes too.
“I know you don't like any of this but remember that before I'm your father , I'm human. I'm allowed some happiness too. I've taken this decision Rowland, there's no going back. I love Brenda and I'm going to marry her. Darren, I expect the two of you to be ready in ten minutes,” he finished. I opened my mouth to retort to his speech but he turned, closed the door after him and left.
“That was intense!” Darren said as soon as my father left. “I thought I was going to pee in my pants. Your father is really serious about this thing man, I told you to cut him some slacks.”
“Cut me some too!” I retorted, already getting angry at his speech. He noticed that I was getting edgy and so, he rolled his eyes at me and busied himself with getting ready too. I heard the gate to the mansion open and wondered who it was. ‘It’s probably the old hag,’ I thought and settled on the chair.
Darren moved to the window and before long,I heard him whistling. He has always been the one who loves women and I knew that his whistling has to do with. The bastard can chase anyone and anything under skirt.
“Don't tell me the old hag has you bewitched, " I said from where I sat. I poured myself a glass and downed it because I knew I needed it.
“Not at all, in fact you need to see this," he said eagerly, his eyes twitching with mischief. I stood up and went to the window, wondering what it was that caused such glint in his eyes.
What I saw was a new BMW black car, and a young man stepping out of it. He looked well-kept and was dressed casually. He walked round the car and opened the passenger's door, revealing a beautiful lady. She stepped out gracefully, laughing at something the guy said. The guy seemed mesmerized by her too, smiling from one ear to another.
“Didn't you say your father's wife-to-be is an old hag?” Darren asked, bemused
“So I thought, I have never met Brenda before so I thought it would be someone close to his age, " I said.
God help me if your father is getting married to this beauty or there would be trouble. Saying that she looked beautiful early was an understatement because my eyes almost fell off its sockets when she stood up. Her dress was a long Velvet dress, hanging to her body and accentuating her figures.
Her laughter rang out again like music in my ears making my stomach knot. I frowned at the realization and wondered what had caused that. The young man held her hand and kissed it, making her smile. He hugged her to himself tightly and before realizing her slowly and turned to the car. She waved at him as he drove out of the car.
“Well, I can't wait to find out who that mysterious woman is,”Darren said and slipped on his shoes. I walked behind but hesitated about going downstairs. For some reasons, my mind wasn't at peace with meeting her and I had a bad feeling about her. Why would someone as young as that be willing to marry my father and the guts she had to let a man kiss me hug her inside his home?
“Well, what are you waiting for?” Darren tugged at me and I followed suit. Darren descended the steps with enthusiasm and I followed him. By the time we got to the foyer, the door had opened and the echoing of the lady's heels was all I heard.
“Right on time,” my father said as I got there and patted my back.
“Brenda?” He called and I expected the lady to walk to my father but instead a woman emerged from the hallways smiling. She looked like the older version of the lady I had seen earlier and had quite a lot of makeup on.
“Hello, Rowland, nice to finally meet you. This is my daughter,” she said beckoning to the young lady. “Ava says hello to Cary and his son,” she said.
