CHAPTER 1: FIRE AND STEEL
The rumble of engines rolled across the deserted highway like a distant storm, low and threatening. Izzy Cruz gripped the steering wheel tighter, her knuckles whitening as the wind whipped through the open road. She wasn’t used to this—the darkness, the speed—but there was a thrill in it she couldn’t deny. Her heart pounded, half fear, half exhilaration, and she couldn’t decide which she hated more.
She had been running for weeks—running from her past, from mistakes that clung like smoke—and somewhere along the way, she had stumbled into a world she didn’t belong in. The black leather jacket draped over her shoulders felt like armor, though she knew it wouldn’t protect her from the danger creeping closer.
Then she saw him.
A figure leaned casually against a sleek black bike under the dim glow of a roadside lamp, the chrome glinting even in the shadows. His presence was magnetic, impossible to ignore. Broad shoulders, a sharp jawline dusted with stubble, and eyes dark enough to swallow her whole. Ryder Blackthorn. The rumors were true: dangerous, wealthy, untouchable… and ridiculously handsome.
He tilted his head, eyes locking onto hers. A smirk curled on his lips, slow, teasing, as if he already knew the chaos she carried inside. For a moment, Izzy forgot how to breathe.
“You lost, or looking for trouble?” His voice was smooth, low, a growl that made the hair on her arms stand on end.
“I—uh…” She faltered, suddenly self-conscious. Her words felt inadequate, cheap, compared to the raw power radiating from him. She wasn’t supposed to be here, not in his world, not anywhere near him.
“Hmm,” he murmured, stepping closer, the scent of leather and something intoxicatingly masculine enveloping her. “Maybe a little of both.”
Her stomach clenched as he circled her, slow and deliberate, eyes never leaving hers. Every movement was confident, predatory, and impossible to resist. She could feel the heat radiating off him, each step tightening a pull she didn’t want but couldn’t fight.
“You’ve got fire,” he said, voice husky now, a smirk tugging at his lips. “But fire burns, sweetheart. You sure you can handle it?”
Izzy swallowed hard. She wanted to tell him to leave, to walk away, but her legs refused to obey. She was captivated, terrified, and maybe a little aroused, though she hated herself for admitting it even in the privacy of her own mind.
“I… I think so,” she managed, though the tremor in her voice betrayed her.
Ryder’s grin widened, and he leaned in, close enough for her to feel his breath. “Good. Because I don’t play safe, Izzy. Not with me. Not with anyone.”
A shiver ran down her spine—not from the cold night air, but from the intensity of his gaze, the dangerous promise lingering between them.
For a moment, time slowed. The wind, the night, even the hum of the bike seemed to fade, leaving only the electricity crackling between them. Ryder’s hand brushed against hers—accidental, he claimed—but it sent sparks shooting through her, raw and demanding.
“You’re in deep, Izzy,” he murmured, voice dropping an octave. “And once you’re in, there’s no turning back.”
Her pulse raced. Her mind screamed to run, but her body… her body betrayed her entirely.
Ryder stepped back, letting the tension linger, giving her just enough space to realize how drawn she was to him. She wanted to hate him, to walk away, but the pull was undeniable. There was something in his darkness that matched the storm in her heart, a dangerous understanding that both terrified and thrilled her.
“I should go,” she whispered, though the words felt like a lie.
“Maybe,” he replied, watching her like a predator eyes prey. “Or maybe you’ll stay. And learn just how sweet the burn can be.”
And then, before she could answer, he mounted his bike and roared off into the night, leaving her trembling, bewildered, and inexplicably wanting more.
Izzy closed her eyes and exhaled, trying to steady the chaos in her chest. One encounter—one brief, electric encounter—and her carefully controlled world had shattered. She had no idea who Ryder Blackthorn really was, no idea what dangers he carried, or how much he would pull her into his world.
But one thing was certain: she wanted him, and that desire would not be tamed.
