Surprised
As his eyelids fluttered open, the faint glow of the room stabbed at his brain like a thousand knives.
Conri felt an excruciating pain, he quickly raised a trembling hand and shielded his eyes. In a state of deep confusion, he sought to know where he was.
"Where am I ?", he whispered coarsely.
The last thing he remembered was Dew saying something about a baby. He struggled to remember her exact words.
His mind was in a state of confusion, a total blank. In panic mode, he scrambled to sit up but another sharp pain shot through his head, forcing him back onto the pillow.
He laid on the bed breathing heavily trying to gather his racing thoughts which had scattered in different directions.
His gazes darted around the room taking in the unfamiliar surroundings. It was a sterile space with white walls, the door had a glass panel.
A thick smell of disinfectant hit his nostrils, making his stomach churn in disgust.
A hospital room?
What happened to him?
How in heaven's name did he get here?
Then he heard a beeping sound from a machine close to his bed. And an IV drip was attached to his other hand.
What the hell?
The glass door flung open and Dew burst in, followed closely by a man in a white lab coat. A stethoscope hung on his neck.
Her eyes were puffy and her face was red from crying.
"Thanks to the goddess, you're alive," Dew said in a concerned tone.
"What happened?," Conri asked. Hoping for an answer.
She touched his head lightly. " I don't want to wear you down with the gory details, Conri."
The doctor checked Conri's vitals and scribbled something on a notepad.
"It's a miracle you made it, Alpha Conri. I'd like you to take adequate rest. You'll remain in the hospital for close observation," the doctor spoke calmly.
"For the last time, what happened to me?," Conri growled in anger.
Dew shivered in fear, she had never seen him this angry. The doctor stepped back to be at a safe distance, he could feel the Alpha's anger.
The last thing he wants is to be torn to pieces while discharging his duties.
Dew sobbed. " Oh, Conri, my love. You were found unconscious in the woods by some warriors of our pack."
"Unconscious in the woods, how," he asked.
"After the former Luna's funeral, you went into the woods in search of clues about what had happened," Dew said.
The doctor left them to attend to some patients.
Then he remembered, Ruby died a few days back. And she was carrying his pup.
Memories of what he had done to her came flooding in. It left him in regret.
"From what we gathered, you were attacked by rogue wolves. I was shattered by the news Cedric. What would I have done without you by my side? Our pup needs you, darling," Dew said in tears.
Conri's eyes widened in surprise. " What are you talking about?"
"I understand that the attack on you must have erased some memories. We are expecting a baby," Dew spoke.
She watched Conri struggle with his thoughts as his face twisted in confusion.
Then she smiled mischievously. Yes, anything to keep her little secret safe.
Dew sat close on the bed close to Conri. She ran her long fingers through his hair. Then she massaged his scalp gently.
"Don't you remember Conri? I told you before the attack that we would be having a pup together. Your heir," she continued.
Could it be the baby he heard her talking about?
His memories were hazy. He was having a hard time remembering what exactly had happened to him.
Dew's narration of what happened seemed strange
to him. He felt since he was at the hospital, then her explanations were genuine.
Dew took his hands and placed them gently on her stomach.
"Can't you feel it?", our little one," she said softly.
Conri managed a smile, at least he will have an heir. Someone to take over from him.
Someone stepped in, it was Morgan, his friend. Morgan exhaled, he was relieved to see his best friend alive.
He stood close to Conri. "I rushed here as soon as Dew called me. She told me that you were found unconscious in the woods."
Conri was glad to have Morgan around. He was a beta, they had grown up together. They both trained under the supervision of the fiercest warriors in the pack. Making them a powerful duo.
"I still don't know how it happened. Do you have any news on Ruby yet?," Conri asked.
"Nothing, Alpha. It seems we have gotten to a dead end. Ruby is dead."
Dew sat listening in anger. He should be thinking about their future not Aurora.
Then she chimed in." You should do as the doctor has said. You need all the rest you can get, the pack needs you."
For the first time, Morgan agreed with what Dew said. He had never liked Dew. He felt she is a scheming bitch, a betrayer.
Conri lay on the bed, lost in thought. If only Aurora was alive, he'd try to patch things up and ask for her forgiveness.
But she's gone because of his stupidity.
Just then, Dew's phone rang. She stood up quickly and hurried out of the room.
Morgan and Conri exchanged glances.
Conri was not pleased, Dew had never left to answer a phone call behind him.
Dew walked out of the hospital, looking over her shoulders to be sure she was not being followed by anyone.
By then, the phone had stopped ringing. She went into her car and dialed the number.
"Dew, how did it go?" a voice asked at the other end of the phone.
Dew looked around and whispered the words. " You're an evil genius. He believed all I told him."
The voice responded. "Good, we have to be careful. I wouldn't want our plans to be exposed. This is only the beginning."
