Chapter 49 That night
Emma's expression soured. She had assumed Caleb would accompany her to Oklens, but it turned out he was waiting for Alina. Suppressing her emotions, she said, "Caleb, we should go."
"Wait a little longer," Caleb replied, pulling out his cellphone to call Alina. Emma looked down, hiding the resentment in her eyes.
"Sorry, the number you have dialed is switched off," a mechanical voice from the other end of the line answered, cold and devoid of emotion.
Caleb's face immediately darkened. "Tomas," he called out, hanging up the phone.
Tomas, who was standing nearby, quickly approached. "Sir?"
"Find out where she is," Caleb commanded, without needing to explicitly state who he was referring to.
Emma stared at Caleb with accusatory eyes. "Caleb," she said, her tone filled with aggression.
Annoyed, Caleb, who usually said very little to Emma, responded curtly, "Emma, don't be too demanding."
Emma's heart raced upon hearing his words, and her gaze at Caleb intensified with aggression.
Looking at the sobbing Emma, Caleb spoke gently, "Let's discuss this when we return."
Throughout the years, Caleb had maintained a distance from Emma, but Emma didn't see their relationship in the same light. His serious words only heightened her anxiety.
Rumors had been circulating for years that she would become the future Mrs. Caleb, regardless of how she achieved that status. They were always linked together, even if public opinion painted her in a negative light. However, only she knew how Caleb treated her. If Caleb were to discover the truth, he would surely make her suffer.
Just as Emma was about to say something, Tomas approached them. "Sir."
"Where is she?" Caleb asked.
"She's already on a special flight to Oklens," Tomas responded.
"A special flight?" Caleb's face darkened, and an aura of danger emanated from him.
She had unexpectedly left on a special plane.
"Yes," Tomas replied, his spine covered in cold sweat.
Caleb had waited for an hour, but by the time the flight was boarding, she had already flown away.
After boarding the plane, Caleb angrily removed his tie and threw it aside, while Emma, feeling aggrieved, didn't dare to say a word.
"Andre's special plane?" Caleb asked, his tone icy.
"It belongs to the Lawson family," Tomas answered.
The revelation left everyone perplexed. How was it connected to the Lawson family once again?
Tomas knew best. Caleb had asked him to investigate Alina, but in the midst of his busy schedule, he either overlooked the details or simply forgot. It was evident that Alina didn't care about such details.
Tomas gently reminded, "Zane Lawson, the husband of Ms. Erica's previous divorce, is Lady Alina's grandfather and the owner of VIG in Shirling."
Caleb's eyes remained indifferent as he let out a dry laugh. So, that's why that woman dared to challenge him so arrogantly. It wasn't just because of Andre, but because she had such a powerful consortium behind her. The old Lawson of the Lawson family in Shirling turned out to be her grandfather.
Emma, aware of the Lawson family's prominence, felt even more jealous. She hadn't expected Alina, whom she thought had nothing, to have such influential connections. As she thought about it, Emma looked at Caleb, panic rising within her. Why did God favor Alina so much?
"Tomas," Caleb called out.
"Yes, sir," Tomas responded.
"Retrieve her recent information," Caleb initially said, but then changed his mind and halted his words.
Tomas had actually gathered a lot of information about Alina before, but even though it had been handed to him, he hadn't thoroughly examined it. Emma felt relieved upon hearing that Tomas wouldn't be investigating Alina further. With the involvement of the Lawson family in Shirling, who knows what other powerful forces are supporting this woman?
In a deep voice, Caleb stated, "Prepare a generous gift. After Oklens, I'll fly directly to Shirling."
"Yes, sir," Tomas acknowledged.
Emma's face turned pale. Caleb's words intensified her fear. He was still so fixated on Alina.
"Caleb," Emma's voice interrupted Caleb's thoughts, drawing his attention to her aggravated and pained expression.
Caleb remained silent, waiting for Emma to speak.
Emma stayed silent for a moment before finally speaking, her expression filled with bitterness. "Caleb, there are many ways to be responsible for someone, and I hope you understand."
Caleb replied calmly, "Yes, I understand. Over the years, I have given you a lot, even using Alina's pregnancy to help with my illness. I understand all of that." Emma's words, laced with anger, served as a reminder to Caleb that his relationship with Alina was no longer the same. He should also be aware of what kind of person Alina truly is.
As Caleb recalled Alina's reaction when he helped her with food the previous day, he realized that the matter regarding Werland Villa was a painful memory for her. Three years ago, he had mishandled the situation. However, he had hesitated when he witnessed her maternal love for the child that had come into her life in such a terrible and painful situation. He hadn't anticipated the depth of her sadness and pain.
"But Caleb, what does it mean for you to be responsible for me? Keeping me alive and providing me with a successful career—is that truly all I have in my life?"
Emma's voice broke, and her tone grew more aggressive as she reached the end of her statement. "That night, I felt completely shattered."
"That's enough," Caleb interjected sternly, cutting off Emma's sentence before she could continue. That night was a painful memory for him as well. And throughout all these years, Emma had never mentioned the details of what had occurred between them on that night.
