Summary
My father disappeared without a trace and the only thing he left me was some voice note. "If anything ever happens to me,please trust Adrian and don't trust anyone else” Trust Adrian? How could i? Because Adrian Blackwoods my father's best friend...and the one man I've always hated. Now im being forced to live in his mansion because apparently someone wants me dead. Adrian has so many rules for everything.Don't leave the house and don't make this harder than it already is. Well too late. Every argument that we have ends the same way, with us just a few inches apart and me forgetting why i was angry in the first place, every time he touches me it feels like a mistake I don't want to ever stop making. He keeps reminding me I'm off limits but his eyes never seems to agree
CHAPTER 1:MISSING
POV Elena
My father’s missing.
I’ve called him over six times.
No answer.
Im looking at my phoneand hoping that maybe it will
Or maybe his phone died or he had emergency at the office
But something feels weird
Im getting a bad feeling because he never ignores my calls.
Even when he's busy,he always finds a way to answer.
I call him again.
It rings twice and then goes to voicemail.
“Dad,please call me back”
I end the call and drop my phone on the couch.
I try to calm myself down.
Maybe I'm just letting my imagination get the best of me.
Hes probably okay
Because my father’s a businessman and sometimes he even travels without telling me until the last minute. But he always tells me where he's going.
Always.
I look outside the window.
His car isn't there.
It's almost 11 now.
Something’s definetely wrong.
I get my phone and call his assistant.
There’s no answer.
I call one of his business partners.
Nothing.
I don't know what else to do.
Then I hear a car outside.
I walk to the window.
Its a black SUV in the driveway.
My heart drops when I see who steps out.
Adrian Blackwood.
Of course.
The last person I want to see right now.
He walks toward the house with his usual confident steps
He's so tall, dressed in a dark suit as always.
Never any colour with him.
But something’s different tonight.
He doesn't look calm.
He looks worried.
A few seconds later,he knocks on the door.
I don't move.
The knock comes again.
I open the door.
“What are you doing here?”
Adrian looks at me.
“Get your things”
I frown.
“Huh?”
“Get your things,we’re leaving”
I stare at him.
“why”
He steps inside.
“Where's my father?”
He doesn't answer.
My stomach drops.
“Adrian”
“Daniel’s missing”
For a bit,I don't get what he's saying.
“What?”
“Your father hasn't been seen since this afternoon”
I shake my head.
“No.That's not possible”
“I've been trying to reach him too Elena”
“Then call again Adrian”
“I already have”
I stare at him.
My mind refuses to accept it.
“He told me he'd be home”
Adrian's face tightens.
“He never came come”
I take a step back.
“Where’s he?”
“We don't know”
My chest feels tight.
I look at my phone again and call my father.
It goes straight to voicemail again
“Maybe his phone’s dead” I say.
Adrian doesn't respond.
“Maybe he's somewhere else”
“Elena”
“What?”
“You need to leave”
I stare at him.
“I'm not going anywhere with you”
“You don't understand”
“No,I actually understand perfectly. My father’s missing and you show up here telling me to pack my things without telling me what happened”
“I've already told you what I know”
“You're hiding something Adrian”
His eyes harden.
“I'm not”
“You always know something”
Adrian takes a breath.
“Daniel was worried about something”
I freeze.
“What does that mean?”
“He didn't tell me everything.”
“But you know something”
“I know enough to know that you're not safe here Elena”
I shake my head.
“You expect me to believe that?”
“Yes”
“Well, I don't”
Adrian looks toward the windows.
“Someone’s been watching this house”
My heart starts beating a lot faster.
“What?”
“I noticed a car outside yesterday and the same car was here this morning”
I look at the window.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes Elena”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I didn't know how serious it was”
I look away.
My father’s been acting strange lately.
There’ve been times I've asked him what's wrong and he says it's nothing.
I believed him.
Maybe I shouldn't have.
“Why should I trust you?” I ask.
Adrian looks at me,he puts his hand in his jacket and pulls out a folded piece of paper.
He gives it to me and when i look at it,i see that my name’s written on the front.
Elena.
My hands start to shake.
“Whered you get this?”
“Your father left it for you”
I take the letter and open it,there are only a few lines.
I read them slowly.
Elena,
If you're reading this, something bad has probably happened to me.
But don't try to find me alone.
Trust Adrian.
I stop.
I look at Adrian but he doesnt say anything
I look back at the letter.
Theres one flast line.
Don't trust anyone else, not even people you think are family.
My chest tightens.
I ask him why my father would write such a letter
“Why would he write this?”
“I don't know”
“You're his best friend”
“I know”
“So you should know”
“I wish I did”
I stare at him.
For the first time,Adrian doesn't look like the cold man I've known for years.
He looks genuinely worried.
Almost afraid.
Then he takes out his phone.
“There's something else”
He plays a recording.
Its my fathers voice
“Elena”
I cover my mouth.
It's him.
His voice sounds serious.
“If anything ever happens to me trust Adrian. Don't trust anyone else, not even people you think are family”
The recording ends.
The same thing the letter read
My father knew something could happen.
He knew enough to leave me a warning.
And he chose Adrian.
The one person I trust the least.
I look at Adrian.
“What happened to my father?”
We look at each other
“I don't know yet”
“And you're going to find him?”
“Yes”
“Then I'm coming with you”
“You're not”
I frown.
“Huh?”
“You're coming with me but you're staying out of this Elena”
I almost laugh.
“You can't tell me what to do”
“I can if it keeps you alive”
I dont like the way he says it.
Like he has already decided everything.
But I look at the letter in my hand.
Trust Adrian.
I don't understand why my father wants me to trust him when he knows i never liked Adrian
I don't want to trust him.
But my father’s never given me a reason not to trust him.
So why does this feel like the biggest mistake of my life?
“Pack what you need”
He goes upstairs.
I snap back into reality
My father isn't coming home tonight.
And I have no idea when or if I will ever see him again.
