Chapter Three:

“I didn’t move that money.” My voice sounded steady, but inside I felt something breaking. Adrian didn’t blink. He didn’t raise his voice. That scared me more, your name authorized it, he said. Your access code. Your signature. “I know what it looks like.”

Lucas stepped closer, his eyes sharp. It looks like internal theft.

“I know,” I snapped, then caught myself. Anger wouldn’t help. “I didn’t touch those accounts.” Adrian held my gaze longer this time. Not cold. Not warm. Measuring.

“Then someone used you,” they said. The word used hit something deep. That was my whole life. I looked back at the screen. The transfers were precise. Timed. Clean. Whoever did this understood finance law, my law; this was planned, I whispered. “Weeks ago.” Adrian’s jaw tightened. “Before the wedding.”

“Yes.”

So, he expected this marriage. Of course, he did. Victor never walked blindly into anything. Lucas folded his arms. “If this goes public, it’s a financial conspiracy between you and Adrian.” And insider trading, Adrian added calmly. “And corporate sabotage.”

My throat went dry. He’s building a case. Adrian looked at me. Against you, not us, me.

The realization was sharp.

“He’s cutting you out to protect himself,” Lucas said quietly, no, I said. He’s baiting Adrian. Adrian tilted his head slightly. Explain. If I’m accused of stealing from Vale Industries to fund your companies, it makes you look like you manipulated me. It makes our marriage look like a setup.

Lucas nodded slowly. “Public sympathy shifts.”

“Yes,” I said. “From you to him.”

Adrian studied me carefully. “You’re thinking clearly for someone about to be charged.”

I lifted my chin. “I’ve been cornered before.” That was true. But this felt different. Because now it involved him, my phone buzzed again. A news alert.

Financial Irregularities Linked to Vale Heiress.

It was moving fast, Lucas cursed quietly. “He leaked it already.” Adrian walked to the window, silent for a few seconds. When he turned back, his expression had changed.

Colder. Focused, Lucas, freeze every account tied to her name. Lucas nodded and left immediately. I swallowed. “You still trust me?”

Adrian didn’t answer right away.

He walked closer instead.

“If you did this,” he said quietly, “it would mean you’re smarter than I thought.”

“That’s not comforting.”

“And if you didn’t,” he continued, “it means someone inside my security missed something.” His pride was wounded. I could see it.

This wasn’t just about money; it was about control. You hate losing control, I said softly.

His eyes flickered. “So do you.” The truth hung between us.

A strange heat filled the room. Not romantic. Not yet. Something else. Recognition.

“I won’t beg you to believe me,” I said, I don’t want you to, that surprised me. I want you angry,” he added. “Not scared. I’m not scared, you’re shaking,

I looked down. My hands were trembling again. I hated that he kept noticing. Before I could respond, Lucas returned.

“It’s worse,” he said.

Adrian didn’t look away from me. “How?”

“The transfers weren’t just to us. They went through shell companies connected to our competitor. The same one merging with Vale.”

My mind raced, He’s linking you to market manipulation, I said. Lucas nodded. And he’s framing her as the bridge. Adrian finally stepped back, thinking.

“So, if I defend you publicly,” he said slowly, “I look guilty.”

“Yes.”

And if I stay silent,” he added, you fall alone, the room felt heavier. Victor had designed this perfectly: divide us, force distrust, force distance. You could annul the marriage, I said quietly; the words tasted bitter.

Adrian’s eyes snapped to mine. “Is that what you want?”

“No.”

The answer came too fast. I saw something shift in his expression, a small crack in his control. “Why?” he asked softly, because walking away now means losing my only real chance to destroy my father, because I don’t want to walk away from you. I didn’t say either, because that’s exactly what he wants, I replied instead.

He studied me again, then something unexpected happened, he smiled, not cold, not mocking, Proud. You’re not as fragile as he thinks, Adrian said. That small line warmed something inside me I didn’t expect.

But it faded quickly. “What’s the next move?” I asked, we don’t react publicly, he said. “Not yet.” Lucas frowned. The media is pushing hard, “Let them,” Adrian replied. “We need proof.” Proof.

Of what?

“That you were hacked?” Lucas asked, Adrian shook his head slightly. “No.”

Both of us looked at him, “Proof that Victor moved first.” I blinked. “He did.”

“Yes,” Adrian said calmly. “But not in a way that exposes him.” My heart began to pound again. “You have something,” he said to me, What? Access, “To what?”

“To your father’s private meetings. His internal legal discussions. You grew up around them.” I understood, you want me to spy, I want you to survive.

The words hit differently.

Before I could answer, the doorbell rang sharply. All three of us froze.

Lucas moved first, checking security feeds.

His face changed. It’s the police. My stomach dropped.

Adrian exhaled slowly. “Already.”

“They have a warrant,” Lucas said. “For me?” I asked, Lucas nodded.

Adrian’s jaw tightened, but his voice stayed calm. On what grounds? Financial fraud and corporate conspiracy.”

It was happening faster than I thought. Adrian looked at me, no hesitation now, no doubt, go upstairs, he said, what? “Now.” “I’m not hiding.”

“You’re not being arrested without preparation.”

“I won’t run.”

I’m not asking you to run. The doorbell rang again, louder this time. Lucas moved toward the entrance, Adrian grabbed my wrist gently before I could follow. The touch surprised me, warm, firm.

“Listen carefully,” he said, his voice low. “Do not panic. Do not admit anything. And do not let them separate you from my lawyer.”

“I didn’t do anything.”

“I know.” The simple certainty in his tone almost broke me, almost. “I won’t let him win,” I whispered. A strange emotion crossed his face, not anger.

Not a strategy, something protective, before I could understand it, Lucas opened the door downstairs, and voices filled the hall. “Seraphina Vale Voss?” someone called out.

Adrian released my wrist slowly.

“They’re here for you,” he said.

My chest tightened. This was the moment Victor wanted: public disgrace, public arrest, public proof that I was weak. I walked downstairs on my own. Two officers stood inside now. “Mrs. Voss,” one said formally. “You’re required to come with us for questioning regarding suspicious financial transfers.”

“I’ll cooperate,” I said calmly.

Adrian stepped beside me. “My legal team will join her immediately.”

The officer nodded once. She’s not under arrest yet, yet. The word echoed. As they led me toward the door, cameras flashed outside.

Media had already gathered, Victor moved fast, I kept my head high, no tears, no trembling, not in front of them. As I stepped outside, I saw something across the street that made my heart stop. A black car parked quietly.

And inside it.

Elena.

She was watching me, not with fear, ot with confusion, with satisfaction.

Our eyes locked for a brief second, and she smiled, not sweet, not nervous, cold.

Like she knew exactly how this would end. The officer opened the car door for me.

As I got inside, my phone buzzed in my hand, one message, unknown number. You always wanted freedom, Seraphina. Prison will give you plenty of it, I looked up.

Elena was still watching, but this time, she raised her phone slowly to her ear.

And I realized something that made my blood run cold. She wasn’t watching alone.

She was reporting, and somewhere nearby.

My father was listening.
