Chapter Five:

“That’s my head of security.”

The words stayed in the air like smoke. I stared at the reflection again. The angle was small, but clear enough. Broad shoulders, close stance, too close, Lucas swore under his breath. “That’s Daniel.” Adrian didn’t move. His face went still in a way that meant something inside him had shifted, “How long?” he asked quietly.

Lucas checked his phone fast. “Daniel signed on eight months ago. Clean record. Military background. Strong references.” “Whose references?” Adrian asked.

Lucas hesitated.

“Vale subsidiaries,” he admitted. My stomach dropped. Victor had placed him, not recently, not in reaction, long before the wedding. Adrian exhaled slowly. It wasn’t anger. It was something colder. A realization that control had been an illusion. “He was inside my system,” Adrian said.

“Yes.”

“He had clearance.”

“Yes.”

“And he stood beside her.” Lucas nodded once.

Silence.

I felt something twist in my chest. Not fear this time. Something closer to shame. I brought this war into his house.

“You think this is my fault,” I said before I could stop myself. Adrian’s eyes snapped to mine. “No.” But it started with me.

“It started before you,” he corrected. “You don’t know that.”

“I do.”

The firmness in his voice hit deeper than reassurance. Lucas stepped back. “I’ll detain Daniel.” “No,” Adrian said instantly.

Lucas frowned. “Why?”

“Because if he disappears now, Victor knows we saw it.” Lucas paused. “He needs to feel safe,” Adrian continued. “Until we know everything.” The word everything sounded heavy. I folded my arms, trying to steady myself.

He cloned my identity, I said quietly, “digitally, publicly, legally.”

“Yes.”

That means Elena isn’t just a replacement. “No,” she’s trained.

Adrian looked at me differently now.

“Like you,” he said, the comparison stung.

I’m not her, “I know,” “do you?”

He held my gaze. “You wouldn’t smile like that while someone else is being destroyed.”

I remembered her expression outside the station. Calm. Watching.

Jealousy flickered again. Not because she was better. Because she was effective. She wants me erased, I said. “No,” Adrian replied. “She wants you to watch,” that was worse. Lucas’ phone buzzed again. He answered quickly, listened, then looked at Adrian.

“Daniel just accessed internal files.”

Adrian’s voice stayed level. “Which ones?” Your merger strategy. The air changed.

Victor wasn’t just attacking my name; he was targeting Adrian’s empire. Adrian walked toward his office without another word. I followed. Lucas stayed behind, coordinating quietly through his earpiece.

Inside the office, Adrian shut the door, the same room from the footage.

I felt my pulse pick up. “She stood here,” I said softly. “Yes.”

“And he let her.”

“Yes.”

Adrian leaned on the desk, thinking, “I underestimated him,” he admitted.

That confession was not small, you don’t like admitting that, I said. “No.” But you did, for accuracy.

Despite everything, a small breath of almost-laughter escaped me. He noticed, “Don’t,” he said, “Don’t what?” Don’t get comfortable; the reminder stung. “I’m not comfortable,” I replied.

Silence stretched.

“You investigated him before this marriage,” Adrian said suddenly.

“Yes.” “Did you find anything real?” “Yes." His eyes sharpened. “What?”

Hidden acquisitions. Off-book partnerships. One especially. “With?” I hesitated. With a biotech firm, Adrian frowned slightly. “That’s not his industry.”

“Exactly.”

The pieces began moving in his head. Is Elena connected? he asked. “I don’t know.” You think she’s more than an adopted daughter. “Yes.”

“Explain.”

I stepped closer to the desk, forcing myself steady.

“Elena didn’t grow up hidden by accident. She was trained somewhere. Educated privately. Positioned carefully.” You’re saying she’s an asset.

“Yes.”

“For what?” I met his eyes, “Replacement.” The word felt colder out loud.

Adrian studied me, “You think Victor planned to replace you long ago.” “I think I stopped being useful.” His gaze softened for half a second, that’s not how this ends, he said. “You don’t know that.” I don’t lose pieces. The way he said it made my chest tighten. “Am I a piece?” I asked quietly, he stepped closer. “You’re a partner.”

The word felt heavier than wife, before I could respond, Lucas knocked once and entered.

“It’s escalating.”

Adrian didn’t look away from me. “How?” “Daniel just transferred files to an external server.”

“Trace it.”

“Already did.”

Lucas swallowed once, “It’s registered under a shell linked to the biotech firm.”

The room went still, and my pulse pounded in my ears. “He’s building something bigger,” I said. Adrian nodded slowly, “Victor doesn’t frame people for sport,” he said. “He builds leverage.” Lucas added quietly, “There’s more.” “What?” Adrian asked.

Lucas looked at me first, then at Adrian, “Elena just posted again.” He handed the phone over, a short video this time, Inside Adrian’s office.

Elena is sitting in his chair, Daniel standing behind her.

And in her hand, a file, my file, my childhood records, my medical history, my private evaluations, I felt exposed.

“She shouldn’t have that,” I whispered. Adrian’s jaw tightened. The video caption read: Some daughters are made. Some are chosen.

My chest tightened painfully, “she’s trying to say I was built,” I said. Adrian’s voice dropped lower. “No.” He zoomed into the video again. There, on the corner of the desk, was something else, a contract, signed by him, dated six months ago. I stared. “What is that?” I asked, Adrian’s face went completely unreadable.

“That,” he said slowly, “is a non-disclosure agreement.” “With who?” He didn’t answer immediately.

My stomach dropped, “with Victor,” I realized, in silence, “You signed something with my father.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Six months ago.” Before the wedding. “Yes.” The air between us shifted.

“What was it for?” I asked quietly, and he held my gaze. “For you,” my breath caught.

“Explain.” “He approached me first,” Adrian said calmly. “He proposed the marriage.” The world tilted slightly. You said this was your revenge. “It is.”

But he offered me to you? “Yes.” The word echoed, I felt something crack inside. So I was a deal, “you were leverage.” “Against him?” “Against me.” The truth settled heavily, he knew you’d want me, I said. “Yes.” “Why?” Because you were investigating him, my chest tightened. He told you that? “Yes.”

And you still married me. “Yes.” Anger flared. “Why?” Because I thought I could control the outcome, the honesty cut deeper than any lie.

“So this entire thing.”

“Was a trap,” he finished quietly. For who? I demanded.

His eyes didn’t leave mine, and for both of us, silence swallowed the room.

Lucas shifted uncomfortably but said nothing, “You never told me,” I said.

You never told me about your investigation; that’s not the same. “It is.” My pride rose fast. “You think I’m naïve.”

I think you’re dangerous, the words stunned me.

“Dangerous?”

“Yes.”

“Because I don’t obey?” Because you don’t break, the tension in the room felt alive. For a moment, everything else disappeared.

No Victor. No Elena. No Daniel.

Just us.

And the realization that we had both walked into this marriage thinking we were smarter than the other, Lucas’s phone buzzed again, breaking the moment. He answered, listened, then froze. “What now?” Adrian asked sharply, Lucas looked at him with something close to shock.

“Daniel just accessed the biometric archive.”

Adrian stiffened. “For what?” Lucas swallowed, “he’s initiating identity reassignment.”

My blood ran cold.

“What does that mean?” I whispered, Lucas looked at me.

“It means,” he said slowly, “he’s transferring your legal identity to Elena.” Silence, complete, total.

I felt like the floor had disappeared beneath me, “They can’t do that,” I said. “They can,” Adrian replied quietly. “If the biometric match confirms.”

My chest felt tight. She’s using my data, I breathed.

“Yes.”

Lucas’s phone buzzed again, and he checked it. His face went pale.

“It’s done,” he said, Adrian’s voice dropped dangerously low, “what’s done?” Lucas looked at me, then at Adrian.

“According to the national registry.” He paused.

I couldn’t breathe.

“Seraphina Vale is officially deceased.
