Chapter 1

I found my husband in our bed on our fifth wedding anniversary.

He wasn't alone.

The party was still going downstairs—fifty guests eating the cake I'd ordered, drinking champagne I'd paid for—while Marcus's hands tangled in my sister's hair.

Chloe saw me first. She didn't scream. She didn't scramble for her dress.

She smiled.

"Elena." My sister stretched across my sheets like a cat. "You were supposed to be cutting the cake."

Marcus at least had the decency to go pale. He grabbed his shirt, buttoning it wrong, saying my name in that soothing voice he used on difficult clients. "Elena, sweetheart, let's not make a scene—"

"A scene." My voice didn't sound like mine. "There are fifty people downstairs celebrating our marriage, Marcus."

"That's actually convenient," Chloe said, sliding out of my bed. She pulled her dress on slowly, like she had all the time in the world. Then she placed a hand on her stomach. "Everyone we love is already here."

The floor tilted.

"I'm pregnant," she said. "Twelve weeks."

Twelve weeks. Twelve weeks ago, Marcus had held me at my grandmother's funeral and whispered that I was his whole world.

"Say something," Marcus urged, reaching for me. "Elena, we never meant to hurt you. It just... happened."

"It just happened," I repeated. "For how long?"

Silence.

"How. Long."

"Two years," Chloe said sweetly, when Marcus couldn't. "Since your honeymoon, technically. You came home with food poisoning, remember? He came home with me."

I laughed. That's the thing nobody tells you about your world ending—sometimes it comes out as laughter, sharp and wrong and loud.

Marcus flinched. "You're hysterical. Sit down. Please. We can handle this like adults." He went to his nightstand—his nightstand, in our bedroom—and pulled out a manila envelope. "I had Roger draw these up. Divorce papers. Clean split, generous terms. No one has to get ugly."

I took the envelope with numb fingers. Opened it. Scanned the first page.

And my blood turned to ice water.

The papers were dated three months ago.

Three months. Before my anniversary invitations went out. Before he'd kissed me this morning and said five years down, fifty to go. He'd stood beside me addressing envelopes to celebrate a marriage he had already scheduled for demolition.

"You planned this," I whispered. "The party. All of it. You wanted an audience."

"Mom and Dad already know," Chloe said, and this—this—was the blade that finally found bone. "They think it's for the best, El. You and Marcus were never right for each other. Everyone saw it but you."

My parents knew. My parents had eaten my anniversary cake knowing.

Marcus held out a pen. An actual pen. "Sign now, and we keep it dignified. Chloe and I will announce the engagement quietly, after the baby news settles. You can tell people the divorce was your idea, if that helps."

If that helps.

I looked at my husband—his crooked buttons, his careful eyes. I looked at my sister, glowing with victory and my husband's child. I looked at the bed my grandmother's quilt was still folded across.

Then I took the pen.

Marcus exhaled in relief. "Good. That's good, sweetheart—"

I signed every page without reading another word. Then I slid my wedding ring off my finger and dropped it into the champagne glass on the nightstand—the one with my sister's lipstick on the rim.

"Congratulations," I said. "You deserve each other."

I walked out of that bedroom with my spine straight and my heart in pieces, past the guests, past my mother's reaching hand, out into the cold October night with nothing but my purse and a signed death certificate for my old life.

I made it exactly one block before my knees gave out.

And that's when a stranger's voice cut through the dark—low, calm, close enough to make me freeze.

"You dropped something back there."

I turned. A man stood under the streetlight, holding out his hand.

In his palm sat my wedding ring, dripping champagne.

"Trust me," he said. "You'll want to pawn it."
