Chapter 9: She Gave Her Spot to Hazel
The next morning, Anna woke up early, had breakfast, and then headed to school. The school buildings there were quite old-fashioned, many having been renovated, and there was a bronze plaque at the entrance engraved with "Riverton University" and the university emblem.
Anna arrived early when there were only a few students around, some girls with earphones stuffed in their ears and the then-popular mp3 players in their pockets, looking very stylish. After reading for a while in the classroom, Anna saw Hazel approaching her. She put down her book and stood up to greet her.
"Anna, how are you? I was planning to visit you, but my family just moved, so I couldn't make it. Don't be mad at me, okay?" Hazel said cheerfully, grabbing Anna's hand and feeling guilty for not having visited.
Hazel had an oval face, a tall figure, and fair skin, a true beauty by any standard.
"I'm fine. Come on, let's go to Mr. Julian's office together," Anna replied. She needed to transfer the speaking slot before Jasper could act. Otherwise, it would be too late.
Anna knew Hazel loved the speech stuff and had always wanted to sign up for it, but failed to secure a spot and had been upset about it for a long time.
"Sure, since you're back at school, it's a good idea to say hello to Mr. Julian," Hazel agreed.
They went to Mr. Julian's office then and knocked politely on the door. Upon hearing a response, they entered.
Mr. Julian, who was preparing for class, adjusted his glasses and looked at the two girls entering.
After setting down his book, he seemed ready to listen to them.
"Mr. Julian, I would like to give my spot in the speech competition to Hazel," Anna stated.
Mr. Julian looked at Anna with surprise. "Really? You need to think this through. It's irreversible."
Even Hazel found it unbelievable. Anna hadn't mentioned this plan to her before. It was quite sudden!
"Anna, you fought hard for this opportunity. How can you just give it to me? You must be joking," Hazel said, her hands trembling and sweating as she held Anna's.
Although she had a thing for speech, Hazel didn't want to take away something so important to her friend. She knew how much Anna valued this competition, a fact well known to her as a friend.
Anna nodded firmly and said to Mr. Julian, "Mr. Julian, I've made up my mind. I want to give my speech slot to Hazel."
It was better to help Hazel than to let the opportunity go to Thea. In her previous life, Thea had stolen the speech slot from her, not only winning eight thousand dollars but also going abroad as an exchange student and making many friends.
Anna knew the consequences but she was not afraid at all. This time, it would be impossible for Thea to get the spot she desired. Hazel, who always studied hard, was very much looking forward to the speech competition, and Anna believed she would perform better than Thea. Besides, with the power of the Thornton family, the Sullivan family, despite their capabilities, could not snatch the spot from Hazel.
Hazel's eyes widened as she tugged at Anna urgently and whispered, "Anna, what happened? Why did you suddenly give the spot to me?"
Anna replied in a low voice, mimicking her, "It's really nothing big. I just had a sudden realization. I don't want to be their lackey anymore."
Mr. Julian finished modifying the form and asked the two, "The form is now corrected. Is there anything else?"
"I need a favor, Mr. Julian. I want to transfer to the medical school."
At her words, Mr. Julian looked at her deeply and cautioned, "Transferring to the medical school requires passing an examination. Do you think just anyone can get in?"
There had been others who tried to transfer to the medical school before. Some were discouraged due to failing the challenging exams.
Others, feeling incapable, switched back to their original majors. Due to the lost time, they struggled to keep up with their studies and were unable to graduate smoothly.
Did she really think it was that easy, that she could do whatever she wanted?
These young students were full of youthful vigor, but after their whims, they had to pay the price themselves.
Of course, there were also students who successfully graduated as medical students and were placed in hospitals as physicians, but those were exceptions.
Anna looked resolutely at Mr. Julian. "Mr. Julian, just give me this chance. I believe I can definitely pass the exam."
Anna was confident about her medical knowledge. After all, she had learned so much from her grandmother, and it wasn't for nothing.
However, to practice medicine now, she needed a certificate, and Anna had no choice but to acquire the physician's qualification through schooling.
Hazel hadn't yet recovered from her shock. Anna giving her the speech competition spot had already surprised her.
Now, Anna was planning to switch her major. Hazel seriously wondered if Anna, during her hospital stay, had suffered a great shock that led to such a drastic change.
Mr. Julian sighed, adjusted his glasses, and earnestly advised Anna.
"You should go back and discuss this with your parents first, Anna. After all, tuition is not a small amount. Don't regret it later. It would deeply upset your parents!"
