Chapter 2

I knew Jake was fond of Chloe.

Whenever it involved Chloe, he was willing to drop everything and rush to her side, simply because she needed him.

Despite Jake's devotion, he never received a promise from Chloe to start a relationship with him.

The reason I chose to stay with him, knowing all this, was because Jake was the one who had saved me from despair years ago.

Due to my timid nature since childhood, I had always been an easy target for bullies. The first day I met Jake, I was kneeling on the floor, scrubbing it over and over with a rag.

Not far in front of me stood three notorious bullies.

I didn’t dare to resist. I could only do as they demanded.

With my head bowed deeply, I didn't see Jake approaching, and accidentally, I smeared my dirty rag across his expensive shoes.

He clicked his tongue in impatience, and just when I thought he would be cruel like the others, he threw his casually slung backpack to the ground and gave the bullies a good beating.

Then, he declared loudly,

“She's mine. From now on, stay the hell away from her. Got it?”

From that day onward, I followed him closely, and indeed, no one dared to bully me again.

I began to curry favor with Jake, like marking his attendance at school, doing his homework, cleaning for him, and even delivering love letters to Chloe on his behalf, as well as tending to the emotional wounds Chloe inflicted on him.

Perhaps because I took care of so many aspects of his life, he finally noticed me.

One day, after yet another rejection from Chloe, he noticed me trailing behind him.

“Andrea, do you like me?”

His tone was as casual as ever, but I couldn’t help nodding.

“Let's date.”

When he reached out his hand to me, my heart raced almost to the point of bursting.

I guessed that perhaps Jake, feeling empty or hurt by Chloe, just wanted to find a woman to fill the void in his heart.

Regardless of the reason, at least for now, I was indeed with him, though he never made our relationship public.

During our seven years together, I never once asked anything of him.

I remember once, as we drank on the balcony, he spoke with a hint of regret.

“Andrea, what if I had met you first? Would I have fallen for you then?”

“Look how great you are, sensible, considerate, and you never argue with me. We're like the perfect couple. There’s nothing to complain about.”

I just smiled and said nothing.

“Even in these seven years, you never asked me to make our relationship public. Sometimes I wonder, do you really love me, or are you just grateful because I once saved you?”

I kissed his cheek and told him not to overthink it, then hugged him tightly.

Did true love really matter?

We got through seven years together.

And I healed my wounds with him.

These seven years changed me significantly, and I naively thought that Jake and I would continue together.

But perhaps the greenhouse was too idyllic, making me forget that the outside world was still fraught with storms.

Jake never got over Chloe.

Countless times, a late-night call or message from Chloe would get Jake out of bed and out the door to find her. Even in the bitterest winter, he never failed to show up.

Just like now, her call was enough to make Jake leave me while I was sick, to be by her side.

Later, I found out that they had gone on an international trip.

This trip made Jake disappear from my world for a month.
