Chapter 1

Today, it was my engagement party, and now Winfred and I were surrounded by our friends and relatives.

I put the ring on his finger, eagerly waiting for his response.

Just then, his secretary rushed over, handing him a phone.

"Mr. Bowman, it's the hospital, Miss Bowman had an accident!"

Winfred's face stiffened!

Then, Mamie's weak voice came through the phone.

"Winfred, it really hurts, I'm so scared..."

"Don't be afraid, Mamie, I'll be right there!" Winfred blurted out.

I was stunned for a moment, instinctively grabbing the man who was about to leave, pleading, "Winfred, today is our engagement, everyone is here, can't you stay?"

Winfred slowly pried my fingers off, his gaze cold, "Can't you understand? Mamie is in the hospital. Do you want her to die?"

With that, he shook off my hand, ignoring the astonished looks of the guests, and strode away.

I looked at everyone’s expressions, feeling as if my heart was being sliced.

His mother came over, "Sabina, we are truly sorry, but you probably know Mamie has some special circumstances. Her health isn't good."

"We need to be more generous as women."

Apparently, everyone felt I was out of Winfred's league, so now that he needed to rush to Mamie in such an emergency, I shouldn't have any complaints and needed to be generous.

I chuckled sarcastically, ignoring his mother, and turned back to my room.

Once in my room, I looked around at the familiar setting and sighed, but suddenly my phone buzzed, and the next second, a photo popped up on the screen.

In the image, Mamie had her head buried in Winfred's shoulder, his one hand on her back, the other around her waist, his eyes brimming with tenderness.

And the ring I had just put on his finger was already gone.

My heart tightened!

Winfred was always like this whenever anything happened to Mamie.

I couldn't stand it anymore and was about to go to the hospital when the door opened.

Winfred walked in, supporting Mamie.

"Sabina, you're here too!"

Mamie made herself comfortable on the sofa as if it was her routine.

My anger surged as I turned to Winfred and demanded, "This is our room, and you just let her in?"

Winfred remained silent, but Mamie spoke up, "You aren't married yet, and Winfred is my brother. Does a sister need permission to visit her brother?"

Winfred patted her, "Come on, Sabina, Mamie is upset, and we just came back from the hospital. Don’t make a fuss, okay?"

My chest felt blocked, and after a long moment, a bitter smile spilled from the corners of my mouth. Just as I was about to speak, I looked up to see Mamie stand up and wrap her arms around Winfred's shoulders, "Alright, let's get some rest!"

Suddenly, a ring appeared on her finger.

I was shocked and immediately stepped forward to grasp her wrist.

Winfred frowned, "What are you doing? Let go!"

I looked at the ring on Mamie's hand and then at Winfred, trembling as I asked, "Where is my ring?"

Winfred's expression shifted slightly, but Mamie laughed.

"I really loved the design of this ring, so I had Winfred buy one for me." She broke free from my grasp, her face disdainful, "But don't worry, Winfred’s ring is right here!"
