Thief
Chapter seven
Ruby walked amongst the group of people as she walked to the bathroom. She needed time to breathe, she clearly did not fit in the world of the rich.
She was about to get to the bathroom when she accidentally bumped into someone and the person’s drink spilled all over her.
“Oh my gosh!” Ruby exclaimed as she looked at her dress which had been completely ruined and stained with red wine.
“Oh no, this dress was hella expensive!” She muttered as she bit her lips in frustration. How was she going to explain to Jaxon that she ruined the dress he had gotten for her because she was not looking???
“I’m so sorry miss, I really am sorry” The lady who had accidentally spilled the drink on her apologized.
Ruby froze as all the hairs on her body stood. That voice!!! Even if she was sleeping, there was no way she would not recognize the voice. It was Ophelia. Her best friend!! she was at the party, but how? Ophelia never mentioned that she was attending any party.
Ruby bit her lips hard as she realized the situation she was in, there was no way Ophelia was not going to recognize her and that was going to put her in big trouble. No one was supposed to know of her marriage with Jaxon.
“Are you okay, miss?” Ophelia asked as she suddenly held Ruby’s wrist, to inquire if she was doing fine as Ruby was acting strange’
“Yes, I’m fine!!” Ruby shrieked as she snapped her hand away from Ophelia’s hold as if a bee stung her.
She had raised her voice too much that she gained attention from the people nearby
“But you don’t look fine?” Ophelia was not the type to easily give up.
“I said I’m fine, stay away from me!!” Ruby sounded alert, now she was glad that she was putting on a mask’
“Is there really any need to be rude?” Ophelia asked in annoyance, Ruby’s actions made her angry, as she actually felt like trash with the way Ruby told her to step away.
She was just trying to help.
“I’m just trying to help because I spilled my drink on you, there’s no need to act rude. Just accept my help, who the hell do you even think you are????” Ophelia asked, her eyes blazing with anger.
“It’s clear I don't need your help, so kindly step away. I need to use the bathroom” Ruby requested in a muffled voice, trying to sound polite. Her head was bent downwards as she used her hair to cover her face. Thank God she had long hair.
Knowing the kind of person Ophelia was, she was short-tempered and feared no one. She had a sharp tongue and would never back down from a fight
“Now you want me to get out of your way?” Ophelia chuckled as her eyes studied the lady in front of her. Why was she acting like that? The last time she checked, she didn’t bite.
“Why are you even hiding your face?” Ophelia asked curiously.
“You came here to steal, right? You’re a thief!!” Ophelia accused out of nowhere as Ruby stilled.
“No, no” she waved her hands in the air.
“Of course, you came here to steal, you’re acting like a thief!! What did you steal? A piece of jewelry? A purse” she questioned like a detective.
Ruby knew that there was no need to argue with Ophelia, if she argued, her cover would be blown. So the best thing to do was to go back to Jaxon, she was not really pressed in the first place. She just wanted peace, now she had gone from frying pan to fire.
“I'll leave now..” Ruby muttered as she turned to leave immediately, but she was held back by Ophelia.
“Where do you think you are going?” Ophelia demanded as she turned Ruby to face her in an instant.
“You're a thief, I knew it, now you're trying to run away. Wait till I call the security!” She threatened her grip on Ruby tight.
“Let me go!” Ruby struggled, trying to feign a low voice as much as she could.
“I'm not a thief, neither did I come here to steal, so kindly let go of me..” Ruby kept struggling. Their little tantrum was already gaining the attention of more people around.
“If you are not a thief, then stop struggling. You're acting guilty!!” Ophelia was insistent on proving that Ruby was a thief.
Her actions had infuriated her.
“Just let me go!!” Ruby yelled as Ophelia abruptly let go of her hand.
Ruby staggered backward as Ophelia released her, she stumbled on her heels and fell to the ground.
She could feel the pairs of eyes on her. She had never been embarrassed before in her life.
First, Ophelia poured a drink on her, and now she was seated on the ground in front of a lot of people.
She only wished that the earth would open up and swallow her.
“I finally got you!” Ophelia exclaimed taking a step closer to Ruby.
“Don't come close!” Ruby screamed as she moved away from Ophelia.
“What's wrong with you?? Why are you embarrassing yourself for nothing??” Ophelia couldn't help but ask as she looked at herself repeatedly to see of she was putting in something that scared people away, or was Ruby actually guilty of something like theft?
“Don't just come close” Ruby uttered, not feeling the urge to get up from the ground.
She humiliated herself, she was still thinking of how to get up from the ground when someone appeared behind her.
She wondered who it was when he suddenly lifted her to from the ground slowly.
“Are you okay?” Jaxon asked in the most affectionate voice but it didn't sound real to Ruby, but she just nodded as he wrapped his coat around her.
“Did she scare you?” He asked, pulling a strand of her hair away.
“She..she..” Ophelia began to stammer as she exchanged glances between Jaxon and Ruby.
Jaxon just raised his hand in the hair, gesturing for Ophelia to keep it quiet.
“Let's get out of here…” he smiled warmly at Ruby as he led her away.
“Jaxon..” June called as she approached them.
“We're leaving..” Jaxon chimed in as he kept on walking till they left the party.
