Chapter four

Amery.

"When is she going to wake up Christina, we're running out of time!" a rough edgy voice whispered.

"It's only been 48 hours Andrew, let's have some patience she'll wake up soon" a female voice whispered back.

Who are they talking about? What are they saying, why does that woman's voice sound so familiar and why can't I move my body?.

Wait, I can't move my body, what was going on? Those were the questions I asked myself but no one answered me.

I felt trapped, and for the fifth time I tried to move my fingers again. Wait! it moved, I did it.

I tried again and this time the female voice shouted. "Oh fuck, thank God, her finger just moved!"

Then I felt warm hands rest on my cold one, followed by a slight shake.

"Amery, are you awake?" her voice echoed in my head and then I recognized that voice.

My mother.

What is she doing here, the last person I saw before I passed out was Atlas.

I opened my eyes slightly and turned my head to confirm my guess. My mother was bent over my bed smiling at me, it made me wonder if the smile was genuine or fake.

I gazed up to see a older man, with greyish hair looking down at me as well. My mother's husband. Andrew Luther.

I groaned holding my head as headache attacked me. My mother helped me sit down, it felt weird getting help from her.

"Here, use this, you'll get better soon" My Mom held out her hand and handed me a pill and water. I took it from her and did as she said before handing back the water to her.

"Where am I?"

They both looked at each other while I waited for them to reply to me.

"California," Andrew replied.

"What? You brought me here against my will"

"Do you want me to leave you there unconscious while I come back here? What kind of mother does that make me"

I scoffed. "Like you didn't want me here before"

"Ofcourse I do, but not like this" she smiled sweetly at me and that pissed me off.

"Oh mother, quit the pretense! It does not fit you" I rolled my eyes and moved to stand from the bed.

The moment I stood up I felt dizzy and I almost fell.

"Don't fight it Amery, you're here already. And you should be happy, cos I did you a favor. I saved you from those backstabbers you called friends" she stated.

She was right, if it wasn't for her I would still be friends with them and not know the things going on at my back.

"Are you hungry? Should I ask them to bring you something to eat" My stepfather spoke up.

I shook my head to reject his offer but my stomach betrayed me by making an annoying sound.

Andrew took that as a Yes and left the room. My Mom sat beside me on the bed and took my hands into her.

With a glare, I snatched my hands away from her.

"Why do you hate me so much?" she sighed.

I snorted, not giving her a reply. Like she doesn't know why.

"Fine, I know I've been a bitch. But now is not the time to hate on each other, because we need each other"

"I don't need you!" I huffed.

"Without me you have nothing, not even the only thing your wretched father left for you"

Oh, here she goes again.

"Call my Father names again and I'll make you regret it!" I said through gritted teeth.

"Amery, we need each other and we can only work it out if you agree"

"What exactly do you want from me! Why did you even bring me here."

"My family need your help, that's all"

I bursted into laughter. "What? What help could I possibly offer you? Like you said, I'm nothing"

"Well.." her words were interrupted by a knock on the door. Then it opened and a girl in a maid outfit walked in with a tray in hand.

She dropped it on the table and bowed before leaving.

"Eat first, I'll come back later" my mother said.

"No, go on I'll eat later"

"Okay"

"I know you are not familiar with the business world but you should know that our company is the biggest tech company in the country. No one comes close" she bragged smiling proudly at me.

I made no comment, letting her get the memo that I didn't give a shit.

She continued. " Well, only one company is our competitor and they're almost close to us. Very soon they might take our position and we need to stop them."

I looked at her in confusion. "I still don't understand why you need me"

"Well a few months ago, they proposed a marriage of convenience between the two companies, and we accepted. The marriage is going to be between the heirs of the company"

"I still don't fucking understand why you need me, Jane is the heir, am I here to be her maid or what?" I snapped.

"Jane is not the heir yet. Andrew's sons are fighting my daughter for this position and I can't let them win. That's why I need your help. If you get married instead of Jane, that means the position can be transferred to Jane later since you're sisters.."

"Wait.. hold up.. You're saying I'm supposed to get married to some heir of a big company instead of Jane?"

"Yes, isn't that great?"she grinned. "You're going to live as a rich woman for two years"

"What the fuck mother!!!!!"I yelled taking her aback.

"What the actual fuck do you take me for? What happened to her, is she crippled? Why are you making me do her dirty work"

"Jane is too young to be trapped in stupid marriage, she's just nineteen"

"But I.. I'm not? I'm not too young? It has always been about her and your new found family. Am I not your daughter as well?!." I snarled as tears pooled out of my eyes.

"You're 23, you're wiser, older and more experienced than she'll ever be. It's just two years, it'll be gone in a jiffy" she tried to hold my hand but I shifted back throwing her a deadly glare.

"Don't you dare fucking touch me"I snarled.

"I'm not going to put my future on hold because of your selfish desire"

She laughed hysterically "What future? Do you even have a future?. You dropped out of college for no reason, I bet your father didn't even know before he died"

My leg wobbled as I stared at her in shock. How did she know, has she found out, does she know everything? I've done a good job hiding it there was no way she'd know.

She continued "Or was there a reason you dropped out? You look shocked, wondering how I knew? How many secrets are you hiding Amery" she smirked.
