Chapter 5
Claire felt overwhelmed. "Liam, this is a hospital!"
"I know that very well."
Liam remained unmoved, pressing close to her, his handsome face near, and whispered in her ear, his voice carrying a hint of danger, "Do you know who he is?"
Claire guessed his hidden thoughts.
He was the president of the Coleman Group, a man of status and position. He wouldn't allow his wife to get too close to another man.
Claire smiled bitterly.
"Liam, I don't have those dirty thoughts like you do, nor do I have the mood for it. Rest assured. Before we divorce, I won't have an affair with anyone."
After speaking, she pushed him away and turned into the ward.
Liam followed her in.
As soon as he entered, he frowned. It wasn't a private room.
Amelia brought him a chair and spoke softly, "Please have a seat! I'll have Claire peel some fruit for you. Claire, don't just stand there! You'll go back with Liam later. I'll take care of your father here."
Liam sat down and chatted with Ryan.
He was usually cold to Claire, but in front of Ryan, he was impeccable. Having been in the business world for years, he could easily win people over when he wanted to.
Ryan always liked him.
However, when Liam suggested changing hospitals, Ryan refused with a smile, "No need to trouble you! This place is fine, and Dr. Hill is a responsible doctor."
Liam didn't insist. "As long as you're comfortable here."
At that moment, Claire handed him a peeled apple.
Liam took it and set it aside, then grabbed her slender wrist. He stood up and said to Ryan and Amelia, "I'll take Claire home now. Take care of yourself, Ryan."
Ryan nodded and watched them leave.
Amelia tidied up the room. Suddenly, Ryan spoke up, "Are they getting divorced?"
Amelia's hand trembled, and she quickly said, "Of course not! Claire and Liam are doing well!"
Ryan sighed lightly, "Don't lie to me. The way Claire looks at Liam has changed. She used to look at him with light in her eyes. Now there's no light."
Amelia was stunned for a moment and then said softly, "You should talk her out of it!"
Ryan leaned back against the headboard slowly. After a while, he spoke lightly, "No, if she doesn't bring it up, I'll pretend not to know. Victor has already lost his freedom. I don't want Claire to lose hers too."
Amelia wanted to say something but decided against it.
...
Liam took Claire downstairs.
The evening sun cast a fiery red glow on the black Bentley, making it look luxurious and dazzling.
Claire was pushed into the car. She tried to get out but was restrained by her wrist.
Liam's expression remained calm. From outside the car, one couldn't tell how much force he was using. Claire couldn't move at all, highlighting the stark difference in strength between men and women.
Once she gave up struggling, Liam released her hand.
He quietly smoked inside the car.
Claire's breath was slightly uneven as she looked at his profile. The dim light cast shadows on his features, making them appear more defined and handsome. Coupled with his status, it was easy for women to be attracted to him.
Claire vaguely remembered it was this face that had captivated her so many years ago.
Liam turned to look at Claire.
He rarely worried about Claire's matters. He didn't care much about her, but he didn't want to divorce her either. Men of status wouldn't easily change their wives.
After a while, he stubbed out his cigarette and pulled out a velvet box from his pocket.
Opening it revealed a diamond ring.
Claire's throat tightened as she saw it. This was the wedding ring she had sold that night.
Had Liam bought it back?
Liam kept staring at her face, not missing any subtle changes in her expression as if trying to see through her.
After a long time, he spoke indifferently, "Put out your hand and wear the ring. Then come home with me. I'll pretend nothing happened before. You will still be Mrs. Coleman."
In rare generosity, Liam offered forgiveness, but Claire refused.
She curled her fair fingers slightly.
Liam's patience wore thin. "What exactly do you want?"
Claire murmured softly, "I want a divorce."
Liam had been busy with work. In the morning when he couldn't find matching cufflinks, he felt very annoyed. And now, Claire refused to go home with him. He was about to lose his temper when he saw Colin talking to a nurse in front of a white BMW in the parking lot.
This made Liam even more displeased. He clicked his tongue against his teeth in irritation.
Just then, his phone rang. It was Joanne calling. Liam answered impatiently, "What is it?"
Joanne dutifully reported, "Miss Graham just got out of bed and accidentally fell down. She might have injured her leg again. She's very upset right now. Would you like to go to Hellington to see her, Mr. Coleman? If you do, she will be very happy."
Liam held his phone but didn't respond immediately, clearly wary of Claire sitting nearby.
The volume on his phone was loud enough for Claire to hear.
She gave a faint smile, opened the car door, and left without looking back.
A chilly evening breeze swept past, leaving Claire feeling cold all over.
She thought to herself that it was a good thing she hadn't wavered when Liam took out the wedding ring earlier. She didn't want to return to that suffocating married life.
Liam watched her treating figure, speaking to Joanne, "Get her the best doctors."
Joanne was surprised. "Aren't you going to Hellington to see her, Mr. Coleman?"
Liam hung up the phone.
After ending the call with Joanne, he tried to call Claire, only to find he couldn't get through.
WhatsApp messages also failed to send.
Claire had blocked his number and WhatsApp.
Angry, Liam tossed his phone aside. After a moment, he picked up the diamond ring and stared at it quietly. Now he believed that Claire was determined to leave him.
However, unless he agreed, she would still have to remain Mrs. Coleman.
Three days later, in the penthouse office of the Coleman Tower, Liam stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, speaking on the phone with Gina. She was missing Claire again and asked him to bring her back for a visit.
Liam was just placating her when a knock came at the door. "Mr. Coleman, you have a delivery."
Liam raised an eyebrow, already guessing what it was.
Moments later, Joanne entered, placing a package on his desk. "It's from Mrs. Coleman."
Liam looked at it for a few seconds before slowly walking over. He picked up the document with his long fingers and opened it, confirming his suspicion. It was a divorce agreement.
He scanned through it and noted that Claire had quite a bit of backbone. She didn't ask for anything.
She was leaving with nothing.
His expression darkened as he pondered for a moment before asking in a low voice, "What has she been busy with lately?"
Joanne quickly replied, "It seems Mrs. Coleman has been trying to sell the house. There have been quite a few lookers, but no one has made an offer yet. Also, she's looking for a job. She won an award in college, and there's a good institution that seems interested in hiring her with decent pay and benefits."
Liam sat down in his leather office chair.
After a while, he raised the divorce agreement high, staring at it intently.
His voice turned cold to the extreme. "Find someone to contact about the Smiths and buy the house at the lowest price possible."
He then scoffed softly, "As for her job, she can't handle hard work."
Joanne was slightly taken aback.
She had thought his boss would go all out against the Smith family, but he didn't.
She hesitated for a few seconds, and Liam's voice had a reprimanding tone. "What are you standing there for?"
Joanne left the room quickly.
Outside the office, she clenched her fingers, hesitated for a moment, and then dialed a number on her phone.
