Chapter 5 The Abandoned Bride Became the Boss's Wife
The first camera flash went off before Sienna took her second step.
Then the ballroom erupted in light.
Guests rose from their seats. Some stared openly. Others reached for their phones beneath the tables. Men who negotiated million-dollar contracts without blinking suddenly looked afraid to whisper.
No one had expected Ronan Walsh.
Sienna walked beside him beneath an arch of white roses. The same aisle had felt like a road to execution in her first life.
Now it felt like an escape.
At the front row, Ranger stood and applauded.
The sound cut through the room.
One by one, the Walsh family followed.
The message was clear. This marriage had the old Boss's blessing.
At the Carlton table, Carmen sat rigid with fury. Yahir looked as if he were calculating the cost of every rumor already spreading through Boston. Dawson, Clifford, and Mickey watched in stunned silence.
Rosie stared at Ronan.
She had always wanted the most powerful man in the room. Her gaze made that painfully obvious.
Ronan never looked at her.
His attention remained on Sienna as they reached the officiant.
The ceremony had been rewritten in less than fifteen minutes, yet nothing felt rushed. Ronan's people had replaced the programs, photographs, monogrammed glasses, and digital displays so completely that Arnold might never have existed.
Power, Sienna realized, was not loud.
Power was changing reality while everyone else was still asking what happened.
The officiant began.
Sienna heard only pieces. Commitment. Loyalty. Protection.
Then Ronan took her hand.
His palm was warm. A faint scar crossed his thumb, left from the night she had saved him. She remembered pressing her hands into his blood and ordering him not to die.
Now the same hand held hers before half of Boston.
"Ronan Walsh," the officiant said, "do you take Sienna Carlton as your wife?"
"I do."
No hesitation.
No glance toward a ringing phone.
No woman more important than his own life.
The simple answer struck Sienna harder than it should have.
"Sienna Carlton, do you take Ronan Walsh as your husband?"
She looked into the face of the man who had mourned her when no one else cared that she was dead.
"I do."
An assistant offered the rings.
Ronan slid a platinum band onto her finger. A small black diamond had been set beneath the inner curve, hidden against her skin.
"Why is it inside?" she whispered.
"Because not everything valuable needs an audience."
Her pulse stumbled.
She placed his ring on his hand.
The officiant smiled. "You may kiss the bride."
The room waited.
Their contract did not require this.
Ronan's fingers touched her jaw. He paused, giving her time to turn away.
Sienna stayed still.
His mouth met hers.
The kiss was controlled, almost formal, but it carried enough heat to erase the ballroom for one dangerous second. His thumb rested beneath her ear. Her fingers tightened against his jacket.
When he lifted his head, the applause sounded far away.
"Still all right?" he murmured.
She nodded.
"Use words."
"I'm all right."
Something dark and satisfied moved through his eyes.
At the reception, Sienna accepted the microphone.
"Thank you for coming to our wedding," she said. "I heard some confusion about Arnold Walsh. To be clear, Ronan is my husband. Anyone who keeps mentioning the man who abandoned me should remember that my husband has very little patience."
Several nervous laughs rose and died.
Ronan took the microphone from her.
"She's right about my patience."
This time, no one laughed.
He placed an arm around her waist and faced the room.
"Sienna is under my protection. Any insult against her is an insult against me. Any threat against her will be treated as a threat against the Walsh Syndicate."
The legitimate businessmen heard a devoted husband.
The people who understood Ronan's world heard a declaration backed by blood.
Sienna looked up at him. He had promised public unity, but this felt like more.
Across the ballroom, Ranger's attorney stepped onto the stage with a sealed folder.
"One additional family matter," Ranger announced. "Effective today, Sienna Carlton is the designated recipient of five percent of Walsh Group's voting shares, along with the attached waterfront distributions."
The room exploded into whispers.
Brianna Walsh shot to her feet.
"Those shares were promised to Arnold!"
Ranger did not even glance at her.
"They were promised to Sienna. Arnold only assumed marrying her made them his."
Sienna's phone vibrated.
A notice confirming her as the designated recipient appeared on her screen.
Five percent.
Voting rights.
Waterfront revenue.
Enough power to change the balance inside the Walsh family.
Ronan bent toward her. "Wedding gift."
"From Ranger."
"The shares are." His gaze dropped to her mouth. "The rest of today is from me."
Before she could ask what that meant, the ballroom doors opened.
Carmen, Yahir, Rosie, and all three Carlton brothers were waiting outside.
And judging by their faces, the real fight was about to begin.
