Raina; her wolf, had never spoken in years. And now, when she finally decided to speak, her first words were ‘MATE’.
It was safe to say, Denise was astounded. If anyone were to really listen, they’d definitely hear her heartbeat loud and clear!
The handsome man standing before her had his rock-hard stare pinned to her form and his bulked muscles coupled with his towering height made him as intimidating as anyone could get. Raina was saying HE was her mate?
When was the last time she’d even heard of fated mates? Werewolves had long disregarded the wishes of their goddess and took fate into their own hands. No waiting. No hoping. None of that. Their mates were whomever they chose. There were only a few who actually managed to meet and mark their fated partners…very few.
That was why Denise couldn’t believe it. Her fated mate? Why would the moon goddess bless her with a mate? Was this her way of saying that she could finally find happiness? Was this truly a sign that her suffering was about to end?
It was just a thought but she was ready to believe it the second it crossed her mind. A mate? Could he be…her savior?
“This pack already earned quite a few minus points. And I’m not liking this peaceful air either, I came hoping to see your lands flooded with red.” He spoke again, and this time, Denise couldn’t deny the butterflies that flew around in her tummy because of it, even her wolf purred. His voice was…majestic and deep, like that of a king or anyone with great authority. She liked it. Really liked it.
“Alpha Kain, you’re here.” Denver moved forward, stretching an arm out for him to shake. “There will only be a few at this meeting besides the guards. We want to keep things low for a while…”
‘Kain?’ Denise repeated his name in her mind, tempted to try it out on her tongue.
“Is that her? The girl?” Kain glanced at her again, eyes swiftly running over her figure. Before she could even begin to feel nervous, his gaze had already returned back up to her face. Ignoring the Alpha’s hand that was still outstretched towards him, Kain stepped around him, and Denise almost choked on spit when he turned in her direction.
“Uh… Y-Yes…that’s her.”
He stalked towards her and her chest thumped faster at each step. “She looks like nothing much.” He stopped in front of her and tilted his head while looking down at her, making her feel small under his intense gaze.
Their proximity was too close, so close that she could feel herself throb all over. Scratch that, her whole body had heated up and her fingers twitched at her side, begging to make contact with this skin. Denise pulled her hands behind her back, flushing darker than a tomato.
She couldn’t touch him, not yet.
“You’re skinny-looking and I bet you’re spineless too. I’m not impressed at all.” He grumbled.
Denise’s eyes widened. The spineless part was valid but it was rare for anyone to insult her appearance, especially if they were men. If he was really her mate, didn’t he also feel this sudden attraction? The feeling in her chest, the way her body was burning for him…was she the only one experiencing it? Was it only her who wanted to lunge into his arms and wallow herself in his warmth?
She found it disappointing… that he hadn’t even acknowledged their bond.
“And who might you two be?” His head turned to Aiden and Wyatt, brow raising.
“I’m Wyatt, Alpha of The Moon Born Pack. It’s a pleasure to meet you, Alpha Kain.” Her father spoke up, but he had seen enough to not stretch for a handshake as well.
“And I’m the heir to this pack.” Aiden then said from beside Denise. He and Kain were both tall but the latter was taller. “But I’m not sure what’s happening here. What’s this meeting got to do with my fiancé?”
“Fiancé?” Kain looked between them, his right eye twitching. With the way her eyes were sparkling as she looked at him, he had never expected her to be someone else’s belongings.
Denver cleared his throat, “You’ll see, Aiden. You’ll soon see why she’s here. How about we move to the training grounds?”
“Fine, then.” Aiden grabbed her by the arm, pulling her to his side.
With one last glance, Kain stepped away and moved off behind Denver, finally allowing her to breathe, “You’d better not disappoint me, Denver. We’ll shift from allies to enemies real quick if you waste my time. Keep that in mind.”
Denver was one of the most powerful Alphas. Denise knew that allowing Kain to speak to him that way only meant that he was more powerful than him. That made her wonder…’who exactly is my mate?’
Aiden tugged on her arm when the others had walked ahead, slowing their pace, “You down for this? Or you just wanna get chained asap?”
Her chains…
For a moment she had forgotten all about her wolf, and now that she remembered, she couldn’t help but worry. Would her mate accept it all?
“You know…” He grinned, swinging their hands between them, “I would be happy to chain you during our ritual. Maybe it’d be fun, who knows? A threesome could work afterwards, yes? What do you say?”
She looked up at him, brows furrowing. He made fun of her once again.
“If that is what Aiden wants.”
“I heard you were kept in cells at your pack, aren’t you happy to be here with me?”
Happy? Someone like her could never be happy. But here, she didn’t have to be a prisoner every day. Yes, she had to endure Aiden’s sex partners and when she was not doing that, she was doing the pack’s chores. The wolves here did not welcome her at all, so most of the time, they were the ones who messed up the pack house just so she could clean it. And at times, they did not even feed her nor allow her to cleanse herself, those times, she made do with whatever was left after they finished eating and then bathed at a nearby river. But still, this place made her feel like she had a tiny bit of freedom.
And now, after meeting her mate…she wanted that kind of freedom with him.
“Yes, I’m very happy here. I appreciate your h---” Denise paused when she noticed the presence of a gaze on her figure. It was intense, so intense that it sent a chill down her spine. And strangely, she could guess who it belonged to.
Kain…
Denise’s head snapped up in an instant, but when she looked in front of her, Kain’s eyes were not on her. She frowned.
“Denise?”
“O-Oh!” She blinked, refocusing on Aiden, “I umm…I like it here…with you, Aiden. I’m very grateful to your pack.”
“Phew! I was beginning to think you’d say no, but you’ve cleared my worries. Let’s have fun once you’re officially mine, yeah? Real fun, I mean.”
She nodded along with his words, though she wasn’t really following what he was saying, “Yes, Aiden.”
“Get this over with, Denver. I’m busy.” Kain said impatiently as they stopped in front of a field fenced off from the rest of the land, a dozen wolves lined out on all sides and four within the fighting ring.
“Oh, we’re here.” Aiden muttered, frowning slightly. “But why do we need all these wolves, father?” He questioned, releasing her hand and taking a seat on one of the benches, crossing his legs.
“They’re here in case anything unexpected happens…to shield us.”
“Shield us from what?”
Denise felt eyes shift to her figure.
“Her.”
