Chapter 4
The moment she stepped onto the private jet, Peggy threw herself into Donovan's arms in a cloud of perfume.
"Donovan! You can finally travel with me!"
She pulled out a thick scrapbook journal. Every page plastered with photos and ticket stubs. Stamped with souvenir marks from around the world.
The route of her five-year "recovery" in Europe.
At every stop, Donovan had arranged top-tier security. The most comfortable suites. The most extravagant meals. Boundless. Unthinking. Indulgence.
And to fool me—he'd performed the role of a decaying invalid for five years.
Crammed into a tiny rental in Queens with me. Eating the cheapest food imaginable.
Watching me withdraw from Cornell with my own hands. Watching me run myself ragged through endless nights for his nonexistent "lifesaving medication." Watching me hollow myself into an empty shell.
Now Peggy said four words: "Travel with me." And he turned and left. Left me alone in that freezing old apartment.
Five years. He'd told so many lies. Lying had become instinct.
But now—just before the cabin door closed—the last image he saw was me. Standing in the doorway of that apartment. Watching them go.
That image slammed into his chest.
Sharp. Sudden. Pain.
"Donovan? Why are you ignoring me?"
Peggy's lip jutted out. Her eyes went red on command. "If you miss her that much, go back now. It's not too late. I came later anyway. Her sister hates me. You resent me. It's only natural…"
He'd heard this exact script a thousand times. Every time, he softened.
But this time, his brow stayed furrowed. He didn't speak for a long moment.
