6.

As the door closed behind Logan, the office felt like it had drawn a collective breath, holding it in suspense. My heart pounded as I tried to calm myself, the sting from Vanessa’s slap fading into a dull throb compared to the adrenaline racing through me. He had called me his fiancée—an unexpected move, and one I still couldn’t fully wrap my mind around. Logan Harrington, the untouchable billionaire, had chosen to publicly claim me in a way that left me both thrilled and terrified.

I returned to my desk, trying to busy myself with work, though my focus was broken. Whispers flitted through the office like wildfire, fueled by Vanessa's dramatic exit and Logan's rare display of protectiveness. The intensity of the gossip only grew as I caught the stolen glances of my coworkers, their looks ranging from envy to shock.

I knew this would only make things worse, especially with someone as influential—and vengeful—as Vanessa. She had connections in high places and wouldn’t let this humiliation go unpunished.

My thoughts were cut off as Logan’s assistant, a young man named Drew, appeared by my desk. He leaned down, his voice low, “Logan wants to see you in his office. Right now.”

I took a steadying breath, nodded, and made my way back to Logan's sleek glass-walled sanctuary. Inside, Logan was pacing behind his desk, his expression unreadable. His eyes softened slightly as he saw me, though the tension in his jaw was still apparent.

“Close the door,” he instructed, his voice calm but firm. I did as he asked, the silence between us thickening with each passing second.

“Logan,” I began, but he cut me off with a raised hand.

“I’m sorry, Claire. For all of this.” His voice was measured, a storm just beneath the surface. “This isn’t how things should have gone, and I never wanted to pull you into my world like this. Vanessa’s behavior was… completely unacceptable.”

He walked around the desk, stopping inches from me, his eyes dark and unyielding. “I meant what I said out there. You’re mine, Claire. Whether it’s a temporary arrangement or something more, I don’t take this lightly.”

The heat in his gaze made my pulse quicken. “Logan, I—”

He stepped closer, his fingers brushing my cheek again, the gentleness of his touch surprising me. “Did she hurt you?” he murmured, his tone softening as his hand lingered against my skin.

I shook my head, trying to regain my composure. “I’ll be fine. It was just a shock.”

Logan’s eyes narrowed. “This situation is more complicated than you realize. Vanessa’s family has deep ties within this company’s board, but that doesn’t mean I’ll let her get away with disrespecting you—or us.” He leaned in, his voice a quiet, intense murmur. “I want you to know, I don’t play games, Claire. If we’re going to continue this, then you’ll have my protection, my loyalty, and everything that comes with it.”

I swallowed, overwhelmed by the gravity in his words. My heart hammered as he stepped back, finally releasing me from his gaze. But before I could process his promise, a sharp knock on the door interrupted us.

Logan’s expression darkened as he turned to the door. “Come in.”

The door swung open to reveal Vanessa, her expression simmering with barely-contained fury. “Logan, I demand an explanation,” she spat, her gaze darting between us. “You humiliated me in front of the entire office!”

Logan’s face hardened as he straightened. “Vanessa, I don’t owe you an explanation. Your behavior today crossed the line.”

Her eyes blazed, her voice shaking with rage. “You think you can just toss me aside for her?” She pointed at me, her finger trembling. “I have been here for years, Logan. Years. I know more about you and this company than she ever will.”

Logan’s gaze was steely, unwavering. “Vanessa, you don’t own me, and you don’t dictate my life. My personal choices are none of your concern.”

Vanessa’s face twisted with a mixture of rage and heartbreak, and for a brief moment, I felt a pang of sympathy. But it quickly faded as her gaze shifted to me, her eyes narrowing with unmasked contempt.

“You may think you’ve won, but trust me,” she hissed, “this isn’t over.”

With that, she stormed out, leaving an unsettling silence in her wake.

Logan let out a long breath, his expression softening as he turned back to me. “Are you alright?” he asked, his voice gentle.

I managed a nod, though my heart was still racing. “I’ll be fine,” I replied, though I wasn’t sure if I believed it myself.

Logan moved closer, his hand reaching out to brush a stray hair from my face. His touch was gentle, almost tender, and it sent a shiver through me. “If this gets too much… if it ever feels overwhelming, tell me,” he said, his tone sincere.

I looked up at him, caught off guard by the warmth in his gaze. “Logan, I… I never expected any of this.”

“Neither did I,” he admitted, a hint of vulnerability breaking through his usual stoic demeanor. “But I meant what I said. You’re mine, Claire. And I don’t take that lightly.”

In that moment, standing there in Logan’s office, the world outside seemed to fade away. I knew I was in deep, perhaps deeper than I should have been. But the pull between us was undeniable, and for better or worse, I was now part of his world.

As he leaned in, his hand still resting gently on my cheek, I felt a surge of emotions—fear, excitement, and something dangerously close to longing. Logan’s gaze held mine, and for a moment, I thought he might close the distance between us.

But just as his lips brushed mine, the door swung open once again.

This time, it was Drew, looking slightly flustered. “Uh… Logan, there’s an urgent matter you need to attend to.”

Logan exhaled, frustration flashing in his eyes before he straightened, casting one last look at me. “We’ll continue this later,” he murmured, his voice a quiet promise.

As he walked away, leaving me alone in the room, I realized there was no turning back. I was caught up in a game far more intense than I had ever imagined.
