Chapter 3 Chapter 3: Welcome to Your New Home
"We would like to adopt you," Damon repeated what Elena said to her.
Becca scoffed and let out a cynical and bitter laugh. "Trust me. You don't want to adopt me," she said, "If this some kind of a payback for what I did..."
"It's not sweetie," Elena said walking toward her, "We really want to adopt you."
"No. You're lying," Becca said, taking a step backward, "This is just some kind of joke, right?" She looked up at Mrs. Atkins.
"Mrs. Atkins, please tell me this is some kind of joke," she said again.
"No, Becca. They're telling you the truth. You're getting adopted," Mrs. Atkins told her slowly.
Becca threw her hands in the air. "No... No, no, no! This can't be happening," she said, more like to herself, "In just one more year, I'm going to get out of this shitty place, having my own apartment and live on my own. This can't be happening!" She was practically freaking out.
"Honey, you're part of our family now," Elena said to her.
"I don't want to get adopted!" She screamed and stomped her foot, "I don't want you to be my f*cking parents! Because I don't have parents and I don't need you in my already crappy, screwed up life!" With that, she turned around and ran out of the room.
"Rebecca!" Damon called her.
"Just give her time. She will come around," Mrs. Atkins told them.
-----
Becca ran up to her room upstairs. She slammed the door close and sat down on the windowsill, looking out the window. Couple of tears dropped down her cheeks and she wiped them away with the back of her hand.
Few minutes later, she heard a knock on the door and the door flew open to reveal Elena and Damon. Becca glanced at them and looked away. "Just go away," she said in her 'I-don't-care' tone.
"Rebecca, we're going to go home right now. So, you need to pack your things," Elena told her.
"First, the name is Becca, not Rebecca. And second, you're just nobody to me. You don't get to tell me what to do," she said with a lot of sass.
"We've signed the adoption papers, so we are officially your parents now and since we are your parents, we get to tell you what to do, Rebecca," Damon told her.
"And what if I don't?" Becca challenged him.
Damon glared at her and said, "You will do as we say whether you like it or not, young lady."
Becca rolled her eyes. "No," she said simply and smirked.
Damon opened his mouth, about to say something, but Elena put her hand in front of him. "Damon, let me handle this," Elena said to him.
"Yeah, Damon. Let she handle it. Let's see what she got," Becca said, half mocked Elena.
Elena approached her and sat next to her on the windowsill. "Becca, we're trying here. We really want to be your parents and we love you Becca, just like you're our own daughter. So, can you at least try, please? I promise we're going to have a good time."
Becca looked away from the window and lifted her gaze to meet Elena's eyes. She could see sincerity in Elena's eyes. Becca thought she would give them a chance.
She shrugged her shoulders. "What choice do I have?" she said and got up.
"You two can just go downstairs. I'll pack my things and I'll be down when I'm done," she said.
Damon and Elena left the room and Becca started to pack her stuff. She appeared on the bottom of the staircase half an hour later with two suitcases in her hands. Damon helped her with her suitcases and asked, "You're ready?" He smiled at Becca.
"Whatever," Becca rolled her eyes and just walked away.
"I hope you will find your happiness with them, Becca," Mrs. Atkins said to her and gave her a hug. Becca hugged her back slightly, but didn't say anything.
"You're really lucky you know," Michelle said next and hugged her as well, "I'm going to miss you."
"And I won't," she mumbled, but Michelle heard her. Her expression changed and she became sad.
"Rebecca, don't be rude to her," Elena warned her.
"Whatever, mommy dearest," Becca retorted and rolled her eyes.
"Oh, I am so going to teach her a lesson when we get home and don't tell me no, because you know how disrespectful she is toward us and other people," Damon whispered to Elena's ear.
"Thank you so much for your help, Mrs. Atkins," Damon smiled and shook her hand.
"You're very welcome, Mr. Salvatore."
"C'mon, let's go home," Damon said and took Becca's hand and led her to the car.
Becca got in the car and Damon buckled her up. "I can do that myself you know. I'm not 5," Becca said to him. Damon just gave her a look that said 'you better zipped your mouth'.
Becca zipped her mouth, sat back, and crossed her arms. The whole ride to Salvatore boarding house was kind of pathetic and awful. Damon and Elena would ask questions to Becca and she answered with one word answers or said something rude to them.
Damon pulled the car up in front of the house and Becca got out from the car. Becca looked at the house and rudely said, "So… You took me out from the orphanage and brought me to live in some creepy, random medieval house? This is so stupid." She mumbled the last part, but of course with vampire hearing, both Elena and Damon heard her.
"This house isn't just some random medieval house. This house is a Salvatore boarding house. It's been here from generation to generation," Damon said and unlocked the front door of the house.
“Yeah, no kidding,” Becca commented and rolled her eyes.
He pushed the door open and let Becca and Elena in. Becca's eyes immediately scanned throughout the room.
"Welcome to your new home Rebecca," Damon said again.
"We'll show you around," Elena said and Becca took a brief tour of the house.
"And finally," Elena said while opening a door to a room upstairs, "This is your room."
Becca walked inside the room and looked around. Like every other bedroom in that house, this one was also enormous and spacious with a huge window on one side of the room. There was a double bed, a nightstand on each side of the bed, a fluffy couch, a door to a walk-in closet, another door to a bathroom, and Damon had placed a wooden study desk in the room.
"Do you like it?" Elena asked her.
Becca shrugged her shoulders and tried to hide her happiness. She totally loved the room. She never had her own personal bedroom in the orphanage because she always had to share with another girl. That bedroom Damon and Elena had prepared for her was more than she expected and she was, of course, happy that she had an enormous bedroom to herself, but she refused to show her giddiness because she didn't want Damon and Elena to think that she was started to feel happy to move in with them.
"I'm sure you're tired," Damon said, entering the room with Becca's suitcases in his hands, "Why don't you take a nap and after that you can unpack your things. We will call you when dinner is ready." He put her suitcases next to her bed.
"Why should I do what you told me to?" Becca asked and crossed her arms.
"Because I'm the adult and you're the kid. So, you better drop the attitude unless you want to suffer the consequences," Damon told her sternly.
Becca scoffed, "What consequences?"
"You'll see. We will discuss it later. For now, just take some rest and unpack your things," he said.
"Whatever," Becca rolled her eyes and turned away. She walked toward the window and looked out.
"Make sure you unpack your things," Damon reminded her again before he took his wife's hand and walked out. Then he closed Becca's bedroom door.
-------
Damon knocked on her door several hours later. "Rebecca," Damon called her, "Dinner is ready. Come down to the kitchen please."
"Go away, Damon!" She shouted from the other side of the door.
"First, lower your voice. Second, you don’t get tell me what to do, and third, we want to discuss something with you after dinner. So, be down in 5. Don't make me come up here again to get you," Damon told her sternly.
"Whatever," Damon heard her mumbled.
Damon turned around and used his vampire speed to the kitchen. Becca appeared on the kitchen 7 minutes later.
"Hello, Rebecca," Elena greeted as she was plating the pasta she made.
"Hi," she said and plopped down on a chair of the dining table.
"You're late. Didn't I tell you to be down here in 5?" Damon asked whilst taking the plate from Elena's hand and put it in front of Becca.
"So? What's the difference? What really matter is that I'm here now," Becca sassed back.
Damon took a deep breath, tried to control his irritation, obviously. "Just eat your dinner and we'll have a talk," Damon stated.
"I'm not hungry. I don't want to eat," Becca said, crossing her arms, but Damon could hear a growl came from her stomach.
He smirked and said, "Your tummy said otherwise."
"Ugh. Fine," she said, rolled her eyes, and started to eat her dinner.
Damon leaned on the kitchen sink and stared at Becca who ate her dinner with a huge appetite. He smiled to himself. He loved seeing her like that.
"What?" Becca asked as she noticed Damon was watching her.
"Nothing," Damon said without took off his smile. She glared at him.
"Why don't you just finish your dinner, Becca," Elena said and took a seat beside her. She caressed Becca's hair, but Becca scooted away.
"Put your hand off me," she said rudely.
"Rebecca," Damon warned her and gave her a hard glare, "Apologize to your mother."
"No," she said.
Damon approached her and yanked her down to her feet. He grabbed her arm and landed two solid and hard swats to her backside.
"Owwww!!! What the hell?" Her hand immediately flew back and she tried to rub the pain away. She pouted and glared at Damon.
He landed another smack to her upper thigh. "Owww!!" She exclaimed.
"Finish your dinner, put the plate on the sink, and go to the living room," Damon told her.
"Fine, whatever," Becca mumbled and shrugged her arm off his grip.
