Chapter 1

A group of hikers walk through the dense forest. Some chat animatedly, as many of them know each other. Others remained silent because some of them did not know each other.

Such was the case with Josefin. She would rather spend a weekend somewhere warm than walking through a frozen forest full of undergrowth and dangerous animals. The branches were so thorny that they could poke someone's eye out.

But what kind of guide was this guy? She thought, watching him from a distance.

She was beginning to think that Tony was not a professional guide, since they were only walking through places that were too difficult to navigate. Honestly, she was fed up with nature.

'I want to go home!' she muttered, exhaling as she continued to walk clumsily.

Josefín looked up to see her friend a little way behind her. She raised an eyebrow and shook her head.

Her best friend, Samanta, was clearly enchanted by Tony and everything he was telling her about the forest. She was drooling over him.

'Really?' she muttered very quietly.

After spending a whole week begging her to accompany her on the excursion, Samanta had grudgingly agreed. And for what? In the end, Samanta had pushed her aside because she wanted to flirt with Tony, who she knew almost nothing about.

“Damn her! What kind of friend is she?'

What her foolish friend didn't know was that this guy could be the type to take people away and murder them, or maybe he belonged to a cult.

They could be waiting for them in the forest!

'Great, maybe we're walking to our deaths.' She held on tight to her backpack and continued walking, the inept ones biting her all over.

You never knew, Josefín thought. Maybe she was just being paranoid. The exhaustion she felt from walking so much and tripping over everything had also left her feeling down. All she wanted was to lie in bed and rest.

‘And to think I have to go back to the office on Monday. I should be resting. How could I have agreed to spend the weekend in the woods?' she mumbled.

The thought of spending the entire weekend in the woods with people she didn't know made Josefín's hair stand on end. Maybe she had watched too many horror movies, since most of them took place in the woods.

She sighed heavily.

‘Enough. I just have to endure a little longer.’

She glanced sideways in search of her red-haired friend. Aha! There she was, flirting with the guide. He was the burly, big, muscular guy — her friend's typical type. She was doing the damn hike alone with no one to talk to.

But she'd get them back, she thought.

She kept walking. There were about fifteen people in the group. But no one talked to her. Had she got something on her face? Did she smell bad? It was something that happened to her all the time, anyway.

She played down the issue, but out of nowhere she felt like she was being watched, and that made her frown.

She looked around surreptitiously but didn't see anyone staring at her. Maybe it was just her imagination, exacerbated by her fatigue. She shakes her head and looks back at the path.

'I have to stop this nonsense and find Samanta to yell in her face that she's a bitch for leaving me alone on this damn, crappy field trip.'
