Chapter 15 A Good Liar
"No need for that."
Nanci curled her lips into a cold smile, her beautiful eyes icy and indifferent.
As she finished speaking, she ignored his expression and walked straight towards the car parked in the yard. "I don't know Brian, Mr. Clarkson. You might as well stop wasting your time on me."
Edward frowned, watching her retreating figure, deep in thought.
They really didn't know each other?
Could it be that she knew Amelia, who had arranged it to get the medicine for his grandmother?
His thoughts were interrupted as he saw her approach a black Maybach. A tall, dashing man got out of the car and gentlemanly opened the passenger door for her.
Edward narrowed his eyes slightly, watching the man's figure, a tumult of unnamed emotions swirling within him.
Was her eagerness for divorce because of this man?
Yet, the man's profile seemed familiar...
Only when the car had disappeared did he suddenly realize that the man was Brian!
That day, Isaac had shown him a photo of Brian.
The car was already gone, but Nanci's parting words echoed in his ears. “I don't know Brian.”
He slammed his hand down on the railing with a bang.
What a good liar!
He hurried to follow her, but a soft hand caught his wrist. "She's gone with another man, Edward. Can't you get over her?"
Edward turned, his brow furrowing deeply. "Miss Underwood?"
"I didn't mean to eavesdrop on your conversation, but this Miss Ross is utterly heartless, showing no affection towards the Clarkson family! How could such a person know the chairman of Ross Clinic?"
If it had been before the divorce, Edward might have agreed.
Sally, seeing him unmoved, continued to persuade, "Even if she could contact Mr. Mathis, it would be thanks to my cousin! Miss Ross is just using that connection to force you..."
"Miss Underwood!"
His voice was cold. He withdrew his hand and meticulously wiped his wrist with a handkerchief.
He looked up into her astonished eyes, his tone icy and distant. "Speaking ill of others behind their backs isn't proper for a lady of your stature."
With that, he strode towards his car.
Only when he had left the villa did he realize the car was long gone.
That evening, Edward received a call. "Mr. Clarkson, Mr. Mathis has recently visited Ross Clinic! We have people waiting near the Alderley branch, and we're sure to meet him there!"
Thinking of the afternoon's scene with the Underwood family, Edward clenched his teeth. "Make sure to catch him!"
...
When the Underwood family sent people to Ross Clinic to request a formula, the duty officer, a man of few words, directly handed over the prepared envelope and box.
The entire process went smoothly, unbelievably so.
However, when they returned to the Underwood family, Simon made a request, asking for Nanci to assist him.
Nanci was puzzled when she received the message. She had already explained everything in the letter, including potential mishaps. There shouldn't have been any problems.
And if there were, they shouldn't be coming to her. Why?
"Could it be your ex-husband still harboring feelings, trying to make things difficult for you?" Brian guessed casually.
Nanci glared at him and muttered under her breath, "You know how troublesome he is, and yet you still brazenly showed up that day?"
Brian, eyes fixed on his smartphone screen, didn't look up. "Am I at fault? He should regret what he's done to you! So what if he was troublesome?"
He angrily threw down his phone, meeting Nanci's gaze with a frivolous grin. "Relax. The people who come to me are never simple. Have you ever seen me scared?"
"If you drop the ball at a critical moment, I'm going back to Woodlands on my own," Nanci said coldly.
Brian's eyes widened. "Nanci, that's too much!"
He had traveled miles, taking such great risks to find her, and she was heartless enough to leave him behind?
And all these risks were because of her!
Nanci, uninterested in further conversation, turned and went into the bedroom to change into a long dress with a coat over it, her belt cinched tight around her slender waist. She put on high heels and casually grabbed the car keys from the coffee table.
"I'll go by myself."
Brian watched her retreating figure, shaking his head helplessly.
The Underwood family's residence was more heavily guarded than before.
There were rows of bodyguards in black suits standing straight at the entrance.
Edward had arrived early.
Uncharacteristically, he was waiting right at the front gate.
As she got out of the car, his gaze swept over it, as if checking whether anyone else was coming out. Then, looking at the bodyguards on either side, Nanci got the picture.
"Mr. Clarkson, all this fanfare for me?"
"Where's the man who was with you last time?" he asked in a deep voice, without beating around the bush.
Nanci walked past him, her voice cold and indifferent. "Why? He was just a chauffeur. I've fired him."
Since the day he watched them leave, he had not been able to find out where Brian had ended up.
And she checked in at the hotel alone.
The two walked side by side into the backyard.
As soon as Sally saw Nanci, her good mood vanished.
It wasn't just because of the harsh scolding from Edward that day, but also because Simon had instructed this woman to be his assistant.
Clearly, being Simon's assistant was a great honor.
She was a top student at the University of Alderley's Medical School, always ranking first in her professional knowledge. If she seized this opportunity to be his assistant, it would certainly add to her prestige.
Now, she looked at Nanci with nothing but resentment, unable to stop herself from pleading, "Mr. Mills, Miss Ross doesn't know anything. Please let me be your assistant instead! Grandpa's health is no joke!"
Nanci pursed her lips, looking at the person in the bed, saying nothing.
Amelia was not pleased, blurting out, "Sally, Mr. Mills has already said he wants Nanci as the assistant. Why cause trouble?"
"Am I causing trouble?" Sally's voice twisted with agitation. "She knows nothing. We might end up doing all the hard work if she screws up! Mr. Mills has to take care of the patient and her at the same time. How can he manage?"
Nanci slightly raised an eyebrow, clearly annoyed. "You say I know nothing?"
Sally retorted, her voice filled with grievances, "You were just lucky!"
"That's enough! Sally, stop making a scene!" Gordon scolded sharply, then turned to Simon and Nanci, saying, "Thank you for your help, Mr. Mills, Miss Ross."
Simon, busy examining the contents of a box, ignored the recent disturbance.
Nanci nodded politely. "Please rest assured."
Sally wanted to say more but was pushed out by another middle-aged woman.
Before the door closed, Amelia gripped Nanci's hand, her big watery eyes silently pleading.
Nanci patted her hand, whispering comfortingly, "Don’t worry. With me here, there won't be any problems. Just remember to charge less next time you help out."
Amelia nodded earnestly. "From now on, I won't charge you at all!"
Nanci chuckled, "Don't regret it!"
"I won't!"
The two spoke in low voices, unaware that Edward had been watching them the whole time.
