Chapter 6: The Political Blonde Case
POV: Alexandria
"Just one more step," I whisper to the suffocating dark. "Just see what he’s hiding, Alex. Then go back to the luxurious cage."
My bare soles slap against the freezing concrete. Each step down the hidden staircase sends a fresh jolt of adrenaline straight to my core. Above me, the heavy oak door of Belcher’s study remains sealed, cutting off the lingering scent of his cedarwood cologne and gun oil. But down here, the air shifts.
I wrinkle my nose, my senses overwhelmed by a jarring, nauseating combination. The heavy, intoxicating floral notes of expensive French perfume; maybe, or something custom; hang thick in the filtered air. But right beneath it, sharp and undeniable, is the sterile, biting tang of rubbing alcohol.
"Why does a mafia dungeon smell like a high-end maternity ward?" I mutter, my voice trembling in the quiet. I trail my fingertips along the rough cinderblock wall to keep my balance. "Or a hospital? What the hell is down here, Belcher?"
My foot hits a flat surface, and the freezing grit vanishes instantly. I look down. Thick, ivory-colored wool carpet swallows my toes.
Click. Click. Click.
Motion sensors. Warm, recessed LED lights bloom to life overhead, illuminating a long, pristine corridor. I flinch, shielding my eyes from the sudden cinematic brightness. The architecture is entirely wrong for a fortress. The walls are painted a soft, clinical pearl. The baseboards gleam white.
"Biometrics. Cameras," I breathe out, my pulse kicking into a frantic, double-time rhythm against my ribs. I’m trespassing in the belly of the beast. If his security flags my descent, I’m dead. "Just turn around, Alex. Go back."
But my legs refuse to listen. I creep down the hallway, the plush carpet muffling my movements so completely I feel like a ghost.
Halfway down, a soft, rhythmic sound echoes through the acoustic paneling.
Whoosh… thump. Whoosh… thump.
I swallow hard, my throat dry as sandpaper. I press my ear toward the wall, my mind racing. "A fetal doppler?" I whisper to the empty hall. "Or a high-end humidifier?"
At the very end of the hall stands a pair of towering, frosted glass doors framed in brushed gold. Art Deco filigree curls across the opaque glass. I close the distance, my breath coming in shallow, ragged hitches. I press my palm flat against the cool glass, leaning in to listen.
Nothing but the rhythmic whoosh-thump. And the faint clink of ice in a glass.
I wrap my fingers around the heavy brass handle. I fully expect it to be locked, rigged with an alarm, or biometrically sealed. But as I apply the slightest pressure, the mechanism disengages with a smooth, oiled glide.
He left it unlocked.
A fresh wave of panic washes over me. Belcher doesn’t make mistakes. He doesn’t leave things unlocked by accident. Which means he wants this space accessible.
I push the door open. The hinges are perfectly silent.
I step across the threshold, and the breath completely evacuates my lungs.
The room is massive, designed like a sunken luxury lounge, but the layout makes my stomach violently rebel. In the center sits a sprawling grey chaise. To the left, a state-of-the-art 4D ultrasound machine glows with a dormant menu. Next to it, a rolling IV stand holds a bag of clear saline, the plastic tubing coiled neatly.
And then there’s the wardrobe rack.
It’s loaded with ridiculously expensive baby clothes. Tiny cashmere booties. Silk bonnets. Hand-stitched onesies that probably cost more than my college tuition.
"Oh my god," I choke out, my hand flying to my mouth. "A nursery. He’s... he’s having a baby down here."
The puzzle pieces slam together in my mind with the force of a freight train. The locked doors. The way he claimed me so ruthlessly on our wedding night, branding me with his bruises and his gold collar, making me parade around as his perfect, untouchable wife.
It’s all a lie. A performative, strategic cover. His real family… his real heir; is hidden beneath the floorboards. I’m not his wife. I’m a mask. A distraction.
A tiny, involuntary gasp escapes my lips. It’s barely a whisper, but in the dead silence of the subterranean room, it sounds like a gunshot.
"Jina, I told you I wanted the sparkling cider, not the mineral water," a voice drawls from the chaise.
I freeze. My blood turns to absolute ice in my veins.
Lounging on the sofa, partially hidden by the high backrest, is a woman.
She’s stunning, in a sharp, vicious sort of way. Thick, blonde hair cascades over her shoulders in loose, effortless waves. She’s wearing a slip of emerald-green silk that clings to her skin like a second shadow. But it’s the sheer, undeniable curve of her stomach that locks my eyes in place.
She is clearly, undeniably pregnant. A prominent, round baby bump spills over the silk, rising and falling with her relaxed breathing. She’s casually scrolling through a sleek, silver tablet, a crystal glass resting on the marble side table. She looks completely at home. Completely protected.
"I said, Jina, fetch the…"
The woman’s thumb stops swiping across her tablet.
Slowly, deliberately, she lifts her head.
Her pale, icy green eyes lock onto mine. For a split second, there’s confusion. She blinks, her gaze raking over my simple silk robe and bare feet. Then, recognition dawns. And then, a dark, terrifying flash of pure, unadulterated hatred sweeps in to replace the surprise so fast it's like watching a door slam.
She doesn’t scream. She doesn’t call for the guards. She just slowly sets her tablet down on the marble table. Her manicured fingers curl into a tight, white-knuckled fist against her swollen belly. She sits up sharply, one hand still cradling her stomach, the other braced against the chaise as she rises to her feet; graceful even now, even pregnant, even furious.
The soft classical music keeps playing. The fire in the hearth keeps crackling. Nothing in this room seems to understand that the air just turned to ice.
Her lips peel back from her teeth in a vicious, predatory sneer. Her mouth curls into something venomous.
"Who the hell," she snarls, her eyes widening with pure venom, "let the political blonde into my wing?”
