An attempt to silence
The guest house sat quiet under a sky heavy with clouds, the kind of night that swallowed sound. Ella drifted in that thin space between sleep and waking, her body warm and loose beneath the thin sheet. Richard’s oversized shirt was the only thing she wore, it was soft cotton that still carried the scent of him, his soap and skin and something deeper she couldn’t name. His arm lay heavy across her waist, with his chest rising and falling steadily against her back, for the first time in days she felt almost safe.
Then the soft scrape of a window sliding open cut through the silence. Richard’s body went rigid against hers, one moment he was asleep; the next he was fully awake, and every muscle coiled. His hand clamped over her mouth, rough palm pressing firm, and he flattened her into the mattress with his weight.
*Stay.*he said
Ella’s heart slammed against her ribs. She nodded once, eyes wide in the dark. Richard rolled away without a sound. He moved like smoke—silent, precise, lethal. The first intruder stepped through the open window, boots soft on the wooden floor. A black mask covered his face. He never saw the blow coming. Richard’s fist cracked against the side of his neck. A choked grunt. The man crumpled.
Ella’s pulse hammered between her legs as she watched. Richard stood naked from the waist up, scars pale against his skin in the thin moonlight. Pure controlled violence. The second man lunged from the shadows. Richard took a glancing blow to the ribs that made him hiss, then drove an elbow upward into the attacker’s throat. Cartilage crunched. Blood sprayed warm across Richard’s chest. The man staggered, gasping, and Richard finished it with a sharp strike that dropped him hard.
Adrenaline flooded Ella’s veins, sharp and electric. Terror and something darker twisted together low in her belly. She was terrified. She was wet. The third man—smaller, quicker—bolted for the window the moment he saw the other two fall. Richard was on him in two strides, but the man slipped through and vanished into the night with a final scramble of boots on gravel.
Richard slammed the window shut, bolted it, then checked the door. His breathing came hard and rough. Blood streaked his knuckles. A thin cut split his lower lip. He turned, chest heaving, eyes dark and wild.
“You okay?”
Ella was on her knees on the bed, the shirt riding high on her thighs, hands shaking. She crawled to the edge of the mattress. Up close she could see the new bruise already blooming across his ribs, the way his pupils were blown wide. No ordinary homeless man fought like that. The thought flickered and burned away the second she reached for him.
She rose onto her knees and kissed the cut on his lip. Tasted copper. The kiss detonated.
Richard growled low in his throat. One hand fisted in the front of the shirt and ripped. Buttons scattered across the floorboards like tiny gunshots. The fabric fell open. His mouth claimed her throat, biting just hard enough to mark, then dragged lower. He took one breast into his mouth, sucked hard, teeth grazing the nipple until she arched with a broken sound. His free hand shoved the shirt the rest of the way off her shoulders. She was bare beneath him in seconds.
He ground the hard length of him against her bare thigh, still half-dressed himself, jeans rough against her skin. Fast. Desperate. No slow burn—just need, pure and sharp after the threat. His fingers found her, shoved two inside without warning, and the wet sound that followed made him curse.
“Fuck, Ella…”
She was already soaked, clenching around the intrusion. He worked her roughly, thumb circling her clit in hard, relentless strokes while his mouth left bruises along her collarbone. She clung to his shoulders, nails digging deep, hips rolling to meet every thrust of his hand. The bed creaked. Somewhere outside an owl called, distant and irrelevant.
Richard pulled his fingers free, slick and shining. He didn’t ask. He flipped her onto her stomach with one powerful motion, hauled her hips up until she was on her knees, face pressed into the pillow. The sound of his zipper was loud in the quiet room. Then the blunt head of him pressed against her entrance. He drove in with one deep, unforgiving thrust.
Ella cried out into the pillow. The stretch burned in the best way—too much, not enough, everything. He didn’t give her time to adjust. He fucked her hard and fast, the bed slamming rhythmically against the wall. One hand fisted in her hair, pulling her head back just enough that she had to arch. The other locked on her hip hard enough to bruise, fingers digging into soft flesh as he slammed home again and again.
Every stroke was pure possession. Claiming her after the threat. Proving she was still breathing, still his, still here. The wet slap of skin on skin filled the room. Sweat slicked their bodies. Ella’s thighs trembled. She pushed back to meet him, chasing the edge that was already racing toward her.
“Richard—” His name broke on a sob.
He leaned over her, chest to her back, mouth at her ear. “I’ve got you. Come for me.”
She shattered. The orgasm ripped through her with a force that stole her breath, walls clamping down hard around him. Her vision whited out. A broken sound tore from her throat. Richard followed seconds later, burying himself to the hilt with a guttural groan. He flooded her in thick pulses, forehead pressed to the back of her neck, whispering her name like a prayer and a curse all at once.
They collapsed together. He stayed inside her, arms locked around her shaking body, still buried deep as the aftershocks rolled through them both. The adrenaline crashed hard, leaving something raw and emotional in its place. Ella turned carefully in his arms, feeling him slip free. Tears slipped free without permission, hot against her temples.
“You could have been killed.”
Richard kissed the tears away, slower now, almost gentle. His mouth was soft against her cheeks, her eyelids, the corner of her lips. “I’d die before I let them touch you.”
She traced the old scars on his chest with trembling fingers, then the new bruise blooming dark across his ribs. The sex had been brutal—necessary, primal. This was soft. He rose only long enough to find a warm cloth in the small bathroom, then cleaned her with careful, almost reverent strokes between her thighs. When he finished he pulled her onto his lap, wrapping them both in the ruined sheet. She curled against him, ear over his still-racing heart. For a long minute they just breathed together. Fear and need tangled so tight she couldn’t tell where one ended and the other began.
Outside, the night stayed quiet. Inside, the air smelled of sex and blood and the sharp edge of survival.
Richard finally stood to check the window one more time, making sure the latch held. Something glinted on the floorboards where the second attacker had fallen. He bent, picked it up between two fingers, and went still.
Ella sat up, sheet clutched to her chest. “What is it?”
He turned the small plastic rectangle toward the moonlight. A company identification card. The logo was unmistakable—the same one that sat on the letterhead of every official document at the firm. The name printed beneath it belonged to a mid-level security contractor who reported directly to the finance director’s office.
Ella’s stomach dropped, the documents, the evidence she had been compiling. They knew, someone had hired these men to silence her before she could report anything.
Richard’s expression went ice-cold. The protective fire that had burned in his eyes only minutes ago turned lethal, focused, dangerous. He looked at her—still flushed, still marked by his mouth and hands, hair tangled from his fist—and something final settled in his gaze.
“They know,” he said quietly. “And now so do we.”
He closed his fingers around the card until the plastic creaked. Outside, the wind picked up, rattling the newly bolted window. Inside the guest house, the silence that followed felt heavier than any threat. The attempt to silence them had failed. What came next would not be quiet.
