Chapter 6 (Adrian) He meets “Alina” again, but it’s Anabel

I’m not looking for her. That’s what I tell myself when I step out again. It’s unnecessary to say it out loud, but I do anyway. Because if I don’t, it sounds like I’m doing exactly that. Looking. Waiting. Expecting. I don’t do that. Not for anyone. Especially not for someone who walked into my life for a few minutes and left with more impact than she should have. It’s irrelevant. I repeat it quietly as I walk past the lobby. Everything is normal. Staff moving. Phones ringing. Conversations happening. Controlled. Predictable. That’s how it should feel. But it doesn’t. Because part of me is aware of something else. Something is not in place. Something unfinished. I ignore it. I always do. Sir. I glance at the receptionist as she speaks. Yes? Someone is asking for you again. I stop. Just slightly. Again? Yes. That word is enough. Did she give a name? Yes. A pause. Then, Alina. I don’t react immediately. But something inside me shifts. No surprise. Not exactly. More like confirmation. So, she came back. I don’t say it out loud. But I think it. And that thought alone is enough to tell me this isn’t random. Where is she? I ask. She’s waiting, over there. The same place. That glass wall.

That exact spot. I don’t rush. I don’t slow down either. I walk at the same pace I always do. Controlled. Unbothered. But my mind is already alert. Watching. Preparing. Because this time, I’m not letting the conversation end with questions. I see her before she turns. Same posture. Same calm presence. Same face. Alina. At least, that’s what she said. She turns slightly as I approach. And our eyes meet again. There it is. That same feeling. Familiar. Unexplainable. But, something else. Something small. Something subtle. Something off. I don’t stop walking. But I notice it.

Immediately. You came back, I say. My tone is neutral. Measured. She doesn’t smile. Doesn’t react strongly. I told you this wasn’t over. Her voice is steady. Confident. But, Different. I don’t respond right away because I’m listening. Not just to what she says. But how she says it. There’s a slight shift. Almost unnoticeable. But it’s there. You’re persistent, I say. I’m consistent. That answer comes quickly. Too quickly. Like it was prepared, I tilt my head slightly. That depends on your definition. It depends on your awareness. Again. Direct. Confident. But something about it doesn’t match perfectly. Not wrong. Just not exact. I step closer. Not enough to invade space. Just enough to observe. You said I was about to make a mistake, I say. Yes. Are you here to explain that? No. I narrow my eyes slightly. No? No. That’s different. Last time, she held back like she knew more but wasn’t ready to say it. This time, she’s not even pretending to explain. Then why are you here? I ask. To see if you listened. That answer lands differently.

Not because of the words. Because of the tone. Sharper. More deliberate. Less cautious. I study her face more carefully now. Same features. Same eyes. Same everything. But the feeling isn’t identical. You think I would change my decisions based on a warning with no proof? I ask. I think you would at least question them. I already do. Not enough. There’s a slight edge there.

Confidence is turning into a challenge. That wasn’t there before. Or if it was, it was hidden better. You’re making assumptions, I say. So are you? That response comes instantly. Like she’s waiting for it. Like she knows exactly what to say next. That’s new. Or maybe, that’s what I’m noticing now. I take a slow breath. You said your name is Alina. She doesn’t hesitate. Yes. No pause. No shift. No doubt. But still, something doesn’t sit right. Then answer something for me, I say. Depends on the question. I almost smile. That’s not how this works. It is if I decide it is. There it is again. That slight difference. That push. That control. The first time, she warned me. This time, she’s testing me. I step closer again. Now close enough to see every detail. You’re not answering the question, I say quietly. You haven’t asked it. I hold her gaze. Then ask it. What changed? For the first time, she pauses. Not long. But long enough. Nothing, she says. But I catch it. That small delay. That tiny shift. That’s all I need.

Something did, I reply. You’re imagining it. I don’t imagine things. Everyone does. Not like this. Not with details like this. I step back slightly. Creating space. Not for her. For my thoughts. Because now I’m not just observing. I’m analyzing. Comparing. Breaking down every word, every tone, every reaction. And the more I do, the clearer it becomes. Same face. Different presence. You came here to see if I listened, I say slowly. Yes. And? And you didn’t. That’s not your decision to make. It becomes my decision if it affects me. That answer is sharper. More direct. More personal. That wasn’t there before. Or maybe it was, just hidden better. Everything affects everyone, I say. That doesn’t mean you get involved. I already am. Those lands differently. Because it’s not a warning. It’s a statement. And statements like that don’t come from nowhere. They come from intent. From choice. From the decision. I study her again. Carefully. Thoroughly. And now, I’m sure. Not completely. But enough. You’re different, I say. She doesn’t react. Not outwardly. What do you mean? She asks. The question is calm. Too calm. Like she’s already expecting it.

Your tone, I say. Your responses. Your confidence. That’s not new. No, I agree. It’s not. But something about it is. Something small. Something precise. Something most people wouldn’t notice. But I do. Because I pay attention. Because I don’t ignore details. And because right now, details are all I have. You said you can’t explain everything yet, I continue. That hasn’t changed. But your approach has. She tilts her head slightly. Maybe you’re just paying more attention. That’s possible. But not likely. Because I was paying attention before. I always am. I don’t think so, I say. Then what do you think? I hold her gaze for a second longer. Then answer honestly. I think there’s something you’re not telling me. That’s obvious. More than before. Silence.

Not long. But enough. Then, maybe I trust you less now. That’s new. That wasn’t part of the first conversation. Why? I ask. Because you didn’t listen, that’s not how trust works. It is for me. Again, that edge. That difference. That shift. I exhale slowly. This isn’t just about what she’s saying anymore. It’s about what doesn’t match. What doesn’t align? What doesn’t feel the same? And I don’t ignore things that don’t align. You’re not answering directly, I say. Neither are you. I asked first. And I answered. Not completely. Not clearly. Not the way she did before. That’s the difference. I take a step back. Creating distance again. Not physically. Mentally. Because now, this isn’t just a conversation. It’s a puzzle. And I don’t walk away from puzzles. I solve them. But first, I confirm them. I look at her one last time. Carefully. Deliberately. Then I say it. Not as a question. Not as an accusation. But as an observation. Why are you different today?
