Chapter 7

ADRIA'S POV.

My heart started to beat rather dangerously, emitting waves of fear throughout my body instead of blood. I hadn't considered it really serious because I felt I and Lucien were a little too close for him to just eat me up, but staring at him as he began to emerge slowly from the dark, I could tell he was hungry to taste my blood.

I was a threat and he wanted to eradicate me.

I took a step backwards and stumbled, trying to hold onto something but there was nothing. My legs wobbled and I went weak in the knees. My hands began to sweat and I regretted ever going to the basketball court. The little beating heart that was meant to stay in my chest had moved and it felt like it was beating in my throat, making me unable to form speech.

“I…” I tried to form words but nothing came out after my first word. Was I going to die just like that? All because I had hidden a leaf of wolfsbane in my hair? All because I had gone closer to the wrong person?

My breathing came out faster and I prepared my legs, trying to get ready to run. If I had a shot at running, then I could beg him.

Just as I was about to turn, a large hand clasped around mine, and I screamed in a high-pitched tone that I didn't know belonged to me. My head whipped to my side and I locked eyes with Lucien.

What? How had he gotten there so fast? He was right in front of me, at least I'd have seen him whiz past, but I hadn't seen him move at all.

I looked back to the place I had seen him earlier and the shock that ran through me when I discovered he was truly not there was so jerking that I wrenched my hands out of his with another scream and ran towards the direction he had come from.

My blood ran cold and my heart was on the verge of exploding. He was right behind me, coming after me!

“That wasn't me! Stop, Adria! It wasn't me!” He shouted, but I didn't stop running. How could he tell such a lie? Did he think I was such a fool not to know that they were incredibly fast creatures.

I quickened my pace, my feet slapping hard on the floor and echoing through the basketball court.

“Stop!” He shouted once more, in a rush, he was right next to me, and he took hold of my hand in a death grip.

“That's not me.” He insisted but I shook my head frantically, closing my eyes tight.

“Liar!” I screamed with all the fear that racked through my body. My bones were restless and my nerves were jangling. All my senses were telling me to run but I couldn't as he didn't even budge this around as he held my wrist tight.

I buckled hard against him, pushing and grunting with all I had to be free from him, my neatly combed hair flying in all directions as I tried to escape but he raised his hand and my eyes went wide as he brought it down crashing towards my neck, and in a second I went limp, losing control of myself as darkness clouded my vision embracing all of me in a single second.

My eyeballs moved without my eyes opening as I tried to recall what had happened and this time, I recalled faster than the last time I had passed out. He had knocked me out. My eyes flew open and I looked all around to see that I was on a sofa in his office, and he was on a chair in front of me.

I sat up in a bolt, my eyes wide and weary. My hair covered one of my eyes, blocking a little of my vision but I dared not raise a hand to brush it away as all parts of me were tense and alert, waiting to scramble and run for it, and calculating what my chances of success were.

I got to my feet slowly, not taking my eyes off him as he calmly watched me.

My feet began to back away slowly towards the door while my eyes stayed trained on him.

“You need to calm your nerves down.” He said in a soothing voice but I wasn't about to fall for it.

“You are overreacting and…” he was saying as he tried to stand, but I raced backwards with my hand out, wishing I had a weapon of some sort. Maybe a knife.

“Don't touch me.” I spat at him as I sidestepped my way, heading towards the door slowly. Why wasn't he chasing me? Why wasn't he trying to stop me from leaving? Why was he so calm? Did he have it in mind to do something to me or had he drugged me before?

“Adria. Let me explain. Come, sit.”

“I'm no fool. Don't… don't come near. Don't you…” I told him as he stood to his feet.

I was close to the door. I could easily pull it open and dash out to the halls. I wasn't far now. I would be away from immediate danger.

“We need to talk.” He said, pocketing his hands.

“I don't want to talk to you. There's nothing to talk about. I don't want to ever talk to you nor do I want to have anything to do with you. Let's end whatever business we have here.” I told him hastily not wishing to have any further business to do with him.

He didn't need to explain anything to me. He was a predator and a predator and a prey could never be together without something going wrong.

“Look, if I wanted to kill you, I would have done it, a long time ago. My house? Remember that? You passed out. At the basketball court, I knocked you out, and here I have you totally in the palm of my hands but I'm not doing anything to you because I have no reason to do anything to harm you.” He said, but those words just seemed like bait to catch his prey. The door was inches away already, and I stared at him with all the defiance I had in me.

Already, my fear was making me restless, and all shaky so I was willing to do anything to get out of that place.

“You want to kill me. You're just not doing it because you want to trick me. You want me to fall for your schemes before you strike. After all, you have a lot of chances to get me. That's why you're being so calm. Sooner or later you would kill me. It's your instinct. Afterall, you are a monster.” I shot back at him, and immediately dashed for the door with my heart about to explode.

I pulled it hoping against hope that it wasn't locked unless I'd have made a fool and a meal of myself.

But luckily, the door swung wide open, and I ran out without hesitating, dashing past the hall like a mad woman on fire. Just as I was about to turn the corner, I turned to see if he wasn't coming after me only to bump hard into someone and fall to the floor with a scream.

However, it was just Daniel and Stacy. I stared up at them breathing hard like I had run a hundred miles and with my heart thumping hard.

“Let's get out of here.” I breathed out, looking back and rushing past my friends.

“What's wrong with you?” Daniel asked as he turned to follow me along with Stacy.

“Why are you this way?” Stacy asked, turning to look back, maybe she'd see someone chasing me.

“It's nothing. I'm… I'm… I'm being naughty. I'm running along the halls so the professors can think the school's on fire.” I lied stupidly and gave a nervous chuckle, knowing my lie was sick and stupid.

As I sat in class, chewing the head of my pen as the professor spoke, explaining the complexity of English to non-english speakers, I could not help but feel that tide of fear wash back and forth through me.

I didn't want everything happening to result in my death.

Because he was bound to be after me because I knew his secret.
