Chapter 1
"Valerie Harold, let's get a divorce!"
When Wendell Joule's voice came from behind, Valerie was frying steak.
The sizzling hot oil splashed on her cheek, but she didn't feel any pain.
"Between you and me, we only have the title of husband and wife, and it’s never about love. Now that the four-year deadline has passed, our marriage should come to an end."
The man's voice was cold, with a sense of detachment.
Valerie bit her lip.
This day had finally come...
Four years ago, the Harold family went bankrupt. Her parents couldn't bear the burden and jumped off a building, leaving behind a mess for Valerie to handle alone.
Valerie's grandfather, Kaiden Harold, and Wendell's grandfather, Christian Joule, were comrades in arms. Kaiden had saved Christian on the battlefield.
In his last moments, Kaiden entrusted Valerie to Christian because he couldn't bear to leave his granddaughter alone.
And so, she ended up in this marriage with Wendell.
But at some point, she could feel that it had been more than just the arrangement between their grandfathers. She had already crossed the line in this marriage. She had given her whole heart away.
She thought there was still time, as long as she played the role of a good wife, that one day she would earn Wendell's true love.
Instead, what she got was a divorce!
"I will give you four billion dollars plus a mansion as compensation. This is the divorce agreement. If you have no objections, just sign it."
Wendell expressionlessly handed Valerie a stack of documents, his brows cold as if he were discussing a business deal.
Valerie took the agreement and looked at the strings of numbers.
Four years, four billion dollars.
The Joule family was still as wealthy as ever.
"Is divorce really our only option?"
Valerie closed the agreement and looked at the man in front of her.
This man she had loved for four years had an extremely handsome face, a tall figure, and always carried an air of seriousness and restraint. He was like a flower on a high mountain peak, unreachable.
"Yes."
Wendell's cold tone showed no hesitation.
Her heart stung slightly.
But Valerie was never someone who hesitated or wavered.
She had been trying to save her marriage, but in the end, she still ended up divorced. Maybe it was time to let go.
Fine, four years of marriage in exchange for four billion dollars. It was worth it in every way!
"Okay, I agree."
She took the pen and swiftly wrote her name on the agreement.
Wendell was somewhat surprised.
In his memory, this woman had always been gentle and indecisive. She seemed like someone who wouldn't have any chance of survival once she left him.
But now she seemed quite the opposite.
He felt inexplicably uncomfortable.
"I will inform you about the specific date for the procedure. If possible, it would be best if you could move out tonight."
Ignoring his own discomfort, Wendell finished speaking in a cold manner and left the villa.
Clearly, he wasn't here to negotiate with Valerie about the divorce. He was just informing her.
That night, the servants who usually treated Valerie with disdain became even more arrogant when they learned that she was now being forced to divorce.
They threw her luggage out of the villa directly.
"You freeloader! You've been living off the Joule family for four years. It serves you right to be kicked out!"
On the chilly night, Valerie squatted on the ground picking up her scattered clothes, looking disheveled.
At that moment, she heard the sound of a car parking behind her. A tall woman got out of the car.
"Ms. Walkley, we have been waiting for you! You must be tired after your long journey here," said the servant who had just yelled at Valerie earlier as she approached to help carry Odelia Walkley's luggage.
Odelia raised her chin without even looking at anyone. "Be careful! My things are very expensive. You can't afford to pay if they get damaged."
Valerie froze for a moment and instantly understood.
