Chapter 1: Fate’s Surprise
Maeve
“Happy Birthday Princess.”
My father’s voice whispered into my ear, disrupting my sleep.
Why in the goddess name did I forget to lock my door?
He can’t just keep barging into my room whenever likes.
I’m an adult now, I’m eighteen.
My eyes popped open as I remembered my new age.
I’ve looked forward to this day since I could remember.
“Get up, come have your surprise.” My father said beside me.
I turned my face to him, my eyes taking in the loving and caring expression on his face.
My heart melted.
My father can be too loving and over protective most times which annoys me, but I know it’s all because he loves me a lot, and also feels that he has to make up for the loss of my mother after she gave birth to me.
It hurts that I never get to meet her or experience her love but my father made sure to feed me stories about her and the kind of loving and generous person she was.
“Fine,” I grumbled climbing out of bed. “Give me a few minutes and I’ll join you.”
“Alright my darling, I’ll be waiting.” He smoothed my bed covers as he stood up.
I couldn’t help but roll my eyes while shaking my head as I entered my bathroom.
I wondered what the surprise would be this year though, but still I know there’s nothing he could get me that would measure up to the excitement of what I’m hoping to find soon.
Yeah, I know there’s a possibility that I might not find it at the age of eighteen but still, I want to hold on to it.
The possibility of finding my mate has been alive in my mind for the past five years.
I look forward to experiencing that consuming love, the ever burning desire for one and other, that one person that would be my other half and complete me.
I’ve looked forward to it, and except my father has a way of giving me my mate as a present then there’s no way his present would excite me.
My brown curly hair bounced freely on my waist as I marched down the stairs. My pale skin glows radiantly under the green dress which hugs my curves perfectly.
My father’s voice rang out along with our maids as I entered the living room. My father held the cake in his hands, smiling so brightly as he sang.
I smiled, joining them, accepting the cake from my father and making a wish for my mate before blowing off the candles.
I pick up the big wrapped up present on the table and open it, revealing a golden necklace. It was beautiful.
“Wow!” I heard the maids exclaiming around me.
It’s beautiful, and I know any girl would be thrilled to have this but maybe because it’s not what I wanted, I just pretend and smile.
“It’s beautiful,”
“Your mother would have been so happy to see how much you’ve grown.” My father whispered, his voice laced with emotions while blinking away the gathering tears in his eyes.
I swallowed, managing a smile despite the tug of pain in my heart.
“Thank you father, you’ve done a wonderful job.”
He smiled and hugged me close.
I hugged the maids too as each of them wished me and the head chef promised to make my favorite breakfast and a special delicious pastry for me.
My smile beamed, I love delicious treats.
“I already invited some friends and some of the pack’s youth over for a small party.” My father told me after I cut the cake.
My eyes widened as I turned to stare at him.
“Father, why would you do that without telling me? I thought we agreed on no party this time?” I asked, my voice getting hard.
“It’s just a small group of people, princess, and I did it for you.” He said.
I sighed, my shoulders sagged with the weight of my father’s announcement.
Leave it to him to always make a big deal out of nothing when it concerns me.
Now my plan to have an early night while pretending to sleep but rather sneak out to the Moonlit tarven, maybe I can catch the scent of my mate from the max of male customers that frequent the place, has now been ruined.
It’s not the first time I’ll be doing something my father would frown at.
A simple “I’m going to sleep and don’t want to be disturbed” always does it till the next day.
No one would know till I sneak back in at midnight.
“Fine,” I replied and went back to my room to put on a more elegant dress.
I had planned to wear it tonight, with my mask covering my face, no one would be wiser.
Later in the evening, our living room was full with my father's friends, some of whom had a close relationship with me, and the youth whom I’ve seen them on few occasions.
I plastered a wide smile on my face, moving around the room, receiving their pleasantries. I was dead on my feet and I know my feet would hurt, come tomorrow morning.
I sighed loudly, when I finally managed to slip out of the room.
The cool night breeze filled my lungs, calming my nerves.
Will I be able to make it out tonight?
What if I miss the chance of meeting my mate tonight?
Oh, father… why…
My spine stiffened, my eyes scanned the open air frantically as my breath quickened.
What was that smell?
I swallowed, my tongue slipped out and lick between my lips.
My wolf purred inside of me, making a soft low growl. She stood alert, waiting for the source of smell.
My heart hammered in my chest, my blood pulsed with adrenaline, my legs trembled, my hands clenched tightly on the railings.
Is this it?
Who could it be?
My eyes widened as a shadow appeared from the dark and then revealed the bearer.
Our eyes connected immediately, mine widened and I gasped softly.
“Mate.” My wolf roared with excitement.
Him?
What is he doing here?
