FIT IN

She walked through the hallways, glad that she wasn't late as usual. There were no sounds of students chattering, just the few ones walking in the hallway with her. She got to the front of her class and gently peeped in, no one was there. Wait! There was a guy, his head was bowed towards a book in front of him.

She sighed before slightly opening the door and walked in. The guy didn't move an inch, probably he didn't notice her enter. She walked to her seat at the back in the last row.

"You didn't close the door properly" she paused once she heard him mutter. Okay he noticed her.

Well how arrogant of him. She walked back to the door and closed it gently, trying not to make a sound.

Maya let out a shudder and towered to her seat again; glad he didn't say anything this time. She took her seat and glanced at him, the bag behind his seat inscribed 'Phoenix Walter'

'Phoenix'

He turned and locked gaze with hers "You called me?" She almost froze as she starred blankly at him, she didn't know she said that out loud.

"Uhh---no. I---I didn't say anything" she heard herself stutter.

He turned and focused on his book again. She recognised him; he was one of the three demigods of MariLake High.

~

Maya sat still, starring at him, hands on her chin and her elbow on the table; she didn't know how long.

"Quit starring at me, I hate when girls do that" he muttered again, standing up from his seat and picking his bag with him.

"Huh?"

"Yeah, you were starring at me dummy"

"I--I wasn't starring at you" she replied almost under her breath. She sat still blinking rapidly at him.

"I understand I'm famous and quite good looking, but you don't have to deny you were gawking at me" he shot and left the class.

'Who does he think he is? Some god?' She scoffed and stood up too, walking towards his seat. She picked up the book he was reading.

"Just when I thought he was actually reading. A magazine? How pathetic!" She scorned with disdain.

~

Soon the other students had started trooping in, in twos, threes and one. And there was Vinna. Maya was still settled on her seat flipping through her note when she noticed Vinna walk in.

"Maya" Vinna called out walking towards her.

"Hey"

Funny how they've both being classmates and just got to be friends a day before.

"You're quite early today"

"Well I'm always this early and good morning to you too" Maya said plainly

"Oh my--sorry I forgot. Where am I manners? Good morning" They both chuckled at Vinna's silly play.

"By the way, Allison bumped into me this morning and tried to spill trash. Well I just ignored her and walked past her, I think you should do that too. It pisses them off" She sneered.

"Ohh that crazy nutcase. I also heard they got punishment"

"Yeah I heard too. Probably just some stupid rumours to make us think they're also being punished justly. Still you haven't told me your punishment"

The homeroom teacher suddenly entered the class and Vinna rushed off to her seat. Maya didn't really want to tell her the punishment she got, and thanks to the teacher she didn't.

Once class was over, both girls walked their ways to their lockers, to get prepared for their next class, PE. The subject every student dreaded.

"I seriously can't believe it's sports period already, can't we just write to the school to drop the damn subject?" Vinna grumbled as they walked to their lockers.

"Nobody likes PE, its so annoying. But I hate nothing more than Spanish class" Maya groaned too.

"Yeah. Mrs. Frasier doesn't even make matters any better"

'Oh my gosh, isn't that Lance Lee' they heard a girl squeal behind them.

'It's him. It's Lance Lee' another squeak.

Maya scoffed, opening her locker and dumping her books in. 'What's so special about him?' She mumbled under her breath.

"Woah, it really is Lance Lee." She heard Vinna also mutter beside her.

"Now you're drooling over him too?"

"Girl, haven't you checked out his Instagram page lately. He just got modelled for one of those Asian fashion industry. He looks so droolable as well" Vinna grinned, scrolling through her phone.

Maya glanced at the 'Lance Lee' coming towards their direction. She couldn't deny his handsome features, not in anyway.

He walked past them and the smell of his cologne filled her nostrils. She knew the scent of a lot of colognes and perfumes but his was different.

She shouldn't be surprised, he was rich, so that was obviously a very expensive imported cologne he was wearing.

"Common we don't wanna be late for PE, or Mr. Sean would have us hop round the field."

They had almost jogged about half of the field when Lance walked in with his friends. Maya was right, Phoenix was one of them, she glared at him with disdain.

" what are they doing here?" One of the students whispered.

"Mr Sean!" Kyle called out

Mr. Sean ran off to the other end of the field where they stood "Yes, how may I help you?"

"We just signed in for PE, and we signed in as special students, the Principal's words"

"Oh--Oh I understand. You boys can have your seats over there, I'll make sure to mark your attendance" Mr Sean grinned sheepishly, he knew he would get a reward for treating them specially. Now this was how they got good grades.

Though the other students couldn't hear what their conversation was all about, but they knew it was in favour of Phoenix, Kyle and the almighty Lance.

"This is so unfair, why do they get to sit and lazy around while we do the jogging" Maya half whispered to Vinna, who couldn't stop herself from drooling already.

"Life isn't fair, Maya. They are special kids and we're not. Now stop talking, I don't want to jog extra rounds."

Mr. Sean blew his whistle jogging back to them, causing half of the students to grumble. His whistle made a really annoying squeal, which they all hated.

*

'Maya Logan, report to the Principal's office now. Maya Logan report now!' the Principal's voice boomed from the school's intercom.

"Huh? What does the Principal wants with you?"

"I don't know. I just hope it isn't what I'm thinking"

She wiped her sweaty hands on her shorts and left the other students who had continued jogging.

She glanced at Phoenix and his friends, they were scrolling through their phones. Such lazy cuties. She sneered and walked past them, they didn't even take a glance at her or notice her.

'I hope Allison didn't say I did any other thing to her'

She heaved before she made her way to the Principal's office.

He sat across his desk, a coffee on his right hand as he took a brief look over Kyle Owen's file through his glasses.

His father had promised to install new set of computers in the school and in return he wanted good grades for his son.

"Quite a bribery" he muttered, dropping his mug of coffee on the table. He took his pen and signed an approval on the file, before finally removing his small glasses.

He sighed resting on his back and twirling his seat, the chants of birds outside filling his ears.

'What a rough week!'

A light knock came through from the door "Come in!"

He watched the slim girl walk in bowing her head slightly before him.

"Mr Principal, you sent for me"

"Yes dear, take a seat"

She sat quietly, starring at his table same time fondling her nails.

'Who drinks coffee at this hour?' She thought.

"Amaya" he exhaled, taking enough time to think and breathe.

"Yes Mr. Principal"

He never enjoyed students calling him Mr. Principal, but they all just wouldn't stop.

"I called you here to let you know the decision of the school's disciplinary committee over your offence"

"Disciplinary committee? My offence? But I thought that has been cleared, I get to go for Summer Camp as my punishment" this time she starred at him, speaking right to his face.

"Yes dear, but they figured it isn't just any misdemeanor. Besides Savannah's parents wrote a petition against you for you to be punished more justly" he added. He whirled the more on his seat still starring at her.

"Well you didn't let me say my own part of the story"

"No one needs your part of the story. And next time you don't interrupt me whenever I'm talking" he cut her off and gently took a sip of his coffee. She glared at him with scorn wishing she could just get all of this done with.

"Now back to where we were. For consciously spilling your meal on your classmates, you get to do the cleaning to the library for three days and ensure the school cafeteria is tidied after lunch break. Meaning you'll miss classes for this, and it must be done after lunch break." He took a dramatic pause "..you can come as early as possible to clean up the library for the three days you get, starting from tomorrow. All these including attending Summer Camp" he stated with total resolute.

"What? All of these? Just for retaliating for my own right?" Now she believed life isn't fair.

"We don't want you doing such again and we're hoping you learn your lessons from this" he remarked, still very unmoved. He whirled his seat some more and stared at the girl before him. Clearly she was mad at him and everyone else behind this.

"I'm sorry Maya, but you should have thought this through before attempting to do such. You may leave now." he took his coffee from the table and took a gentle sip one more time.

Maya grimaced, making a move to get up the seat, she towered to the door and handled the door knob. The Principal watched her carefully, sighing as soon as she left.

He knew she didn't deserve to be punished this much, but he had no choice. Savannah's parents had paid enough for Maya to regret doing what she did to their daughter, and he had done just that.

He wore his glasses again, remembering he still had more files to attend to.

~

Maya prowled angrily, as she stomped out of his office, all she needed was to go somewhere far away, away from everyone she knew. She couldn't believe she got extra punishment just by standing up against her bullies. All the time she got bullied, the disciplinary committee never did anything about it.

Now she knew she would never fit in. She would never fit in with the rest of the students, not even with someone like Vinna.

°

As early as 7am the next morning, Maya made sure to arrive school, she hurried to the library once she got the keys from the libarian. The whole place looked dusty, she had a doubt to whether they really cleaned the place daily. The books on the shelves were roughly arranged and she knew she had a lot to do. She had to finish up before classes begin.
